Topamax Allergy Because Of Sulfa?

I'm allergic to sulfa antibiotics and have been hesitant to start my new script- I just read some posts about it being common to be allergic to topamax with a sulfa allergy... Scared to try my new drug- ;) anxiety is why he prescribed it... Ugh

I am really not sure how effective this would be at treating anxiety.

Topamax contains the active ingredient Topiramate and it is an anticonvulsant, though it has also been used to treat migraines and bipolar disorder.

I haven't found anything mentioning it being common to be allergic to it, if you have a sulfa allergy.

Additionally, a sulfa antibiotic allergy and other sulfa drugs aren't the same thing and being allergic to one doesn't necessarily mean you're allergic to the other.

However, the best thing you can do is discuss your concerns with your doctor to see why he prescribed this and if it's safe for you to take.
