I have been told that theophylline er is being discontinued. Is this true? I have taken it for years for asthma.

Thanks Mike in CA. I hope that the rep can find a way to contact all of us, but then our pharmacies would be the ones to be ordering it. The manufacturer I contacted said they had no idea when they would be producing it again.

Thank you, Mikeincalif!!! Any specific info you provide, such as manufacturer, goes a long way to find a solution.

All, here's an email i just received from Ambelic Pharmaceuticals..... There is a PDF with the ordering numbers for the pharmacist but i don't know how to attach it yet:

"Michael,

Thank you for sharing. Here is a mail piece that we have that pharmacies can use to access this product thru major wholesalers in the US.

I hope this is helpful and we want to support patients that need Theophylline ER.

Thank you!"

All, In my phone discussion with Alembic today, the rep said they had only gotten approval ( FDA? ) for production of 300 and 450mg tablets and they are scored for cutting. The 100 and 200mg are definitely easier and more convenient but ill take cutting them over losing them altogether. My physician told me that the pharma are no longer making the 100 and 200 mg ER because it is an old outdated medicine and not so many people use it anymore. I love this Theophylline because it has helped me live a normal life for 32 years, I can breath. I dont know what will happen to me if I can't use it anymore. All the new inhalers and mess cause deadly and severe side affects. This does not make any sense, that the pharma is dictating what put Ned's should be against our will.

Well I'm back to doing the legwork and searching for some of mine again because my last refill was only a partial and it was only 100 milligram tabs which I had to take more than one of those at at time for my current dose of 200 so I run out 2 weeks instead of 1 month and so far I can't find anywhere around my area in northwest Ohio that has any nor can they order it. I had been so hopeful that this nightmare would be over by now because a couple months back i read on numerous resources that the shortage would be over by May that has not turned out to be the case whatsoever

Just wanted to let you that Alembic Pharmaceuticals out of Bridgewater New Jersey is manufacturing 300 and 450 milligram ER tablets now. I talked to them this morning June 22nd 2016 and this medicine is currently in production. I told the representative about the plight of all of you on this blog. I have been on the long search for Theophylline ER for my pup, Penny. When I get to work, I will forward this blog to the sales representative and he said he would send Distributing information of this drug to all of you. I hope this helps all of you and your pets also.

The pharmacy told my physician that they are no longer making the 100 of 200 mg ER. She said we will need to cut the 300 in half??

They don't care because it's about their profit and not saving lives. They don't care if we live or die. This world is starting to remind me of mad max!!

Plus....I can't believe the pharmaceutical companies discontinued this drug due to it's negative side effects, as they push Statin medications, which are HORRIBLE and very damaging, along with Qunoline drugs which have horrible side effects and oh so many other medications that are very damaging to the body.

This is about profit or lack of it.

I agree with Tackynut . I tried all the different options to use instead of Theophylline, and they are all either steroid based, which is much worse for your body than theophylline, even Advair, which I use, is a steroid and gets into the system and after one puff a day, my vocal cords almost shut down, or they are other VERY expensive drugs that did nothing for my lungs.

Maybe it is toxic, but it still is effective for many of us and the newer ones aren't. I guess I would compare it to chemo. That's basically poison but does the job if monitored correctly.

Yes there are better products available with fewer side effects. When I began in critical care nursing in 1980 literally > half of the patients had in running intravenously. Especially if they were on ventilators. I've prepared gallons of that stuff and I for one am not shedding any tears. It was toxic to the liver, caused arrhythmias and had limited if any efficacy.

I happened to be in a Mesa AZ Target with a CVS. She had 10 - 100mg ER tabs and transferred my prescription from my home pharmacy in Fargo. She called me back, said they had 100 tabs at the Gilbert SuperTarget CVS. I picked them up for $28. Shows that while they are scarce, you have to do the legwork to find availability. Pharmacist said CVS doesn't have any special access, simply supply and demand. I was in the right place at the right time, but never pass on calling or stopping by a pharmacy without asking.

Yes it was about $90. But I found 100 tablets at a Rite Aid and a Duane Reade/walgreens in Manhattan also had it and they charge around 40 for a month supply.

I wonder If there is really a shortage or if this is just a piece gouging?

I am getting a 30 day supply at my compounding pharmacy of the 100 mg and it cost me $44.00. Being you need 200mg maybe near double that price...

Can you tell me how much they charge? I can get the 200mg dosage for my chocolate lab from a compounding pharmacy but it's more than double the price.

I know the dosage may obviously be significantly lower, however, my 17 yr old Miniature Pinscher takes this drug for Pulminary Hypertension.

I just got his prescription refilled w/like a 3 month supply from Diamondback Pharmacy in Arizona last week [June 2016], they are a compounding pharmacy we use.

I have had no issues, & have heard nothing from the Doctor, or Pharmacy, about any sort of discontinuation.
