I have been told that theophylline er is being discontinued. Is this true? I have taken it for years for asthma.
I feel your pain - as many others on here do. Your story and mine are almost identical. I am very concerned as to how my health will be after I take the last pill I have been able to get.
Doris, As my past states, according to my walgreens and the manufacturers website, they are producing the drug in the 300 and 400 mg. ER strength. So you could just cut the 400's in 1/2 if you need to separate the dose or just take 400 once a day as it is extended release.
I have been on 200mg. Theophylline 3x da. then cut back to 200mg. 2x da now for 38 yrs.My drug store tells me it will no longer be able to get it. I have had excellent results with it . If stopped cold turkey I will have reactions and if not taken I will land up not being able to breath. I am 83 yrs old and live alone. My whole family have had asthma. I really need help. Nothing other than Theophylline keeps asthma at bay. Also have had cronic sinuis infections for 53 yrs which doctors tell me I would be on Theophylline to dialiate my sinuis I need help
Kim , look back about 15 to 20 replies for info on where to get theophylline from a new source...
I recently was able to refill my dog's Rx for 200 mg at a Walgreen's in NYC. The mfr. is Pliva. Don't know if they're just using up the stock they have or will be getting more in. Otherwise, it can be made at a compounding pharmacy for double the price.
I was in my local Walgreens last week and had them check. They had both 300 and 400 mg. tablets on the shelf. A month ago that hadn't been the case. So she checked the manufacturers website and saw that they were producing it now, no mention of discontinuing it.
So perhaps for those who use a lesser dose, you could purchase the 300 or 400 mg. and cut it. Walgreens didn't have any 100 or 200 mg. tablets, so perhaps it is the lower doses they aren't making anymore. I don't understand it but seems to be the case.
I know the pharmacist warns against cutting the ER tablets but I've been taking a 400 mg. ER tablet and 1/2 of a stash of 200's I have left, to make up a 500 mg. a day dosage and have done this for over a year now and done fine with it.
HI, I also need this for my little pug, neither myself nor my Vet can find any, and it's 7/18/16- do you know if all manufacturers have completely discontinued this drug?
were you able to find any? or was there an alternative that your Vet switched your dog to? My vet's trying to find alternatives but still waiting to hear back.
she really needs this med or she can barely breathe.
what else have you found out? thank you in advance for any help you can give.
The 300mg generic should be readily available. I have no trouble getting the 300, but the 200 is always a waiting game now.
My doctor also told me they were going to stop selling it.
MUCH, MUCH higher and at times hard to find too. That is my experience.
Yes especially HRC, not Bernie Sanders. I am detailed
All I can say is remember this at the poles in November. Our politicians are bought and paid for by the pharmaceutical industry. We need to stop this in its tracks.
Theo 24 200 Mg ER is the equivalent. It's more expensive though.
What can be used to replace the theophylline...I normally take the 200 er...and the 400 er break apart in and out of the pill cutter...even the pharmacy cannot cut them
My dog takes 25 mg morning an night she is small so I got 100 mg and broke into 1/4 but they took it off the market but still make 300 mg so I got the liquid only way to do it now.
I am. I need to get it started before I can't breath and end up in the hospital and die.
I was also informed by my pharmacy that theophylline has been discontinued and only the brand name versions are available. They sold me what they had, 102 pills (I get it by a 3 month lot), I take theophylline er 300mg 2 times a day but the brand name is 4 times more than what I paid for generic, or find an alternative. Gosh what would be the alternative to a generic...the more expensive brand name. I guess the CEO needs a bigger bonus.
I asked my physician if the pharma is going to stop making theophylline. She said she does not think that they will stop it completely, but that we may need to cut the higher mg to our specifications. Well I felt sonewhat relieved that I have a chance to continue to breath!!! Only thing is it's not quite what I expected.
Yes, thank you, Mike in CA. Best news for all of us who need this drug to breathe!
