Theophylline Discontinued (Page 4)

I have been told that theophylline er is being discontinued. Is this true? I have taken it for years for asthma.
I was able to get 40 of my 90 day prescription and am back on the hunt for a new supplier. I was so optimistic from my conversation with them that inventory was NOT a problem. Back to the drawing board!
I called Medvantxrx to ask for 200 or 100 mg ER tablets and they had sold out their stash and can't get more.
I can get 400 mg and 600 mg ones at Walgreens, but not the 100 or 200 mg ones.

I found they were extremely helpful, and I made her verify several times that they really had it rather than getting a follow up email a week later and tell me it was back ordered. When calling my vet to fax them the script, the vet told me they had a limited amount of the meds but it was triple the price offered by Medvantx.
Can you give the name and contact info of this mail order pharacy so others can use it?
I spoke to a mail order pharmacy who confirmed for me, I can get 100mg ER of Theophylline for my 6# dog. Called my vet who faxed a script to them. Finally! 90 day supply for $45 at retail. I called many of the sources found on this forum and finally got lucky.
My reliable NY pharmacy finally ran out of the 200mg so I'm getting it at a local compounding pharmacy. $72 w/o insurance vs. 45 but at least I can get it .
What is the name of your pharmacy in Canada please? Thanks.
All I can say... no insurance..just cost me 140 bucks for 60 pills ,big pharmaceutical companies..yayyy
Sure hope they bring back the 100mg tablets! I am having a bit of trouble getting my cat to take the liquid!
Don't listen to that doctor! They don't understand! We need our Theophylline!
I used Theo 24 for years - until I was unable to get it. That's when I switched to the generic theophylline. I recently checked the pharmacy again and was told they still are unable to supply it. Guess I'm in a pickle here.
My doctor also tried to get me to switch to a corticosteroid inhaler type treatment...totally ignoring the fact that I cannot tolerate corticosteroids. She insisted that the inhaled version would not affect me the way Prednisone does (swelling of hands and feet and severe edema)...however within three days of making the switch I was almost on the way to the ER. Luckily my mail order pharmacy can get my 450mg of Theophylline from a pharmaceutical company in India...so I only went 5 weeks without last Spring. Worst 5 weeks of my life.
Why not ask your doctor about Theo -24? It is a capsule and not a caplet like theophylline was. Yes, theophylline is a very old drug, and these new young doctors have never heard of it. My new primary care doctor tried to tell me that taking albuteral inhalers and steriod inhalers 4-5 times daily would manage my asthma much better than theophylline, but had no defense when I told her I could miss a dosage of my pulls and NOT have an asthma attack. I couldn't miss a dose of my inhalers though.
I was in the doctor's office Thursday and we discussed theophylline being discontinued. He said it was so old many of the newer doctors have never heard of it. However, it has been discontinued and there is no replacement at this time - even though it is more effective than any of the newer meds.
My doctor and pharmacist both have said that Theo-24 is the same as theophylline. In September my theophylline level was 13.5 which is within therapeutic range. For the first 3 weeks, they put me on Theo-24 200mg every 12 hours. I just had my blood drawn last Monday and my theophylline level was only 8. This is the first time in 15 years that I've had wheezing and had to depend on my inhaler. :-(
This past Thursday the doctor put me back on my regular dosage of 300mg every eight hours. In 3 weeks I'll have more blood drawn to check the level again. I have no doubt that it will return to therapeutic level again.
My lung doctor said its discontinued as of now I am still getting it but only in 400 mg dose. And when I can no longer get that then there is nothing to replace it with. I hope they will resolve it soon. I was told they no longer make it.
My 6-lb dog was taking 1/4 of a 100mg ER tab daily for years for cardiomyopathy, and will be using a compound after my current supply runs out. Both Sam's and Costco agreed to do for a reasonable price.
My dog takes .25 mg twice daily. I have a compound pharmacy that makes these for me. They are like 43.00 per month but whatever I have to do so be it.
As I've posted before, the medication has not been universally discontinued. You just need to find a pharmacy that buys from manufacturers such as Teva that still make it. I have had success in getting 200mg continuously from Walgreens, but each drugstore seems to only purchase from certain manufacturers. Breaking them in half is generally not recommended. Or you can get it from a compounding pharmacy, which you can find on the internet and have your doctor send a prescription.
Yes it has been discontinued unfortunately for those of us who have used it for years. However I have found that you can still get the 400MG ER tablets at some pharmacies and if you're on 200 mg like I am I just break them in half and let me tell you I have stocked up because when they're gone they're gone
I think they've been discontinued because it's a matter of greed and a manufacturer just isn't making a big profit on these inexpensive drugs that work
