I have been told that theophylline er is being discontinued. Is this true? I have taken it for years for asthma.

I need it too for my dog. I'm hoarding what I can find, while I can find it. There are comments below for a compounding pharmacy out of New Jersey (CareFirst Rx Specialty Pharmacy). I have spoken to them, and although it's more expensive, I'll switch to that once I run out. Hope that might help!

I have C O P D,emphacema, chronic bronchitis. I have been taking theophylline 300 for about 20 years. Now my Doctor tells me they are taking it of the market. I was taking 1 tablet 2times daily, then she told me to start using it once a day. Can you tell me if being taken off half a dosage can cause? I have not been the same since I was told to cut back!

If I run out, and CVS can't supply it any longer, I will probably just die. I cannot take corticosteroids at all. Last Spring, I was without my Theophylline for about 5 weeks. I had to do Albuterol nebulizer treatments every 4 hours around the clock and almost had to go to the ER at least 5 times. I cannot see myself living for long if I have to resort to that on an ongoing basis.

I'm still having no problem getting generic theophylline 400 and/or 600 mg. ER from rite aid and walgreens. I do have to cut the 600 in half and take it twice a day to get results. I did better on taking 400 in the morning and cutting my small stash of 200mg in half to get 500 mg a day but I couldn't get the 200 ones anymore.

I rue the day that happens. I knew about the compounding pharmacy so that'll be my next supplier. It's not cheap but I'll do whatever I have to.

Good for you for having that stockpile. I did that last year, but now my sources are no longer able to supply them. I've contacted every drugstore in my area and get the same response - "We cannot get any more. The manufactures have discontinued this drug." Hope you have better results. I'm down to about 45 days - then summer hits and I will be in TROUBLE!.

Just so you know, theophylline is the generic, and Theo 24 is the brand. I've been taking theophylline 450 twice a day for about 20 years now. It is the only thing that works for me as I am allergic to corticosteroids and every other asthma med they've tried to give me has steroids in it. I am very lucky. My mail order pharmacy (CVS/Caremark) has no problem filling my prescription. In fact, I've got a stockpile of about 3 months worth in my cabinet right now.

The point of my post: If CVS/Caremark accepts your insurance, call them and see if they can help you.

I just thought I would add my plight to the message board. I couldn't even read all the messages since there were ten pages! I have been aware of this situation for several years now, but have been lucky to be able to get what I need. I need to take the name brand of theophylline because the generic does not work for me. Years ago I did notice that they discontinued making 100mg capsules of Theo 24. And periodically there would be a delay. I have tried to take less and stockpile some pills after having some scares over unavailability. A year and a half ago, I had an incident where the doctor wanted to change my medication. I ended up in trouble with my asthma and have not been the same since. Now I find myself taking twice as much Theo 24 as I ever did in my whole life, and still having problem with my breathing. And now my pharmacy is saying they are having a hard time getting it. So needless to say, I am very concerned about it not being available. It troubled me to read the posts about others struggling to get what they need and trying to use inhalers for their dogs! I hope things get better.

This pharmacy was very competitively priced. I could have purchased a scored 100 mg tab for $18/mo less for 30 days, but I opted for the 25mg 4x day instead or 360 tabs for 90 days. Cutting the 100's were a lot of work and never cut well, so it's nice to have this option.

Was it pricey getting the prescription from that source?

Just received my Theophylline, as ordered, from CareFirst Rx. What a relief. No more searching! Can you see the big smile on my dog's face?

It seems like there is always new information on this topic. While searching for other meds which are bronchodilators, I came across CareFirst Rx Specialty Pharmacy out of New Jersey. They also produce vet (and human) meds. I left an email. I received a call from the pharmacist on call. He said they do compound this medication and produce it in pill form, not just a liquid like most compound options. He said they even produce a mini tab of 25mg used for small dogs and cats. This is exactly what I need. I have been using an inhaler in the absence of a pill for my small dog. If anyone wants to check it out, see their website. It will tell you what states they are licensed in as a pharmacy, and how to contact them: cfspharmacy.com. My interest is for my dog, but know that many of you on this site are looking for the human medication for treatment of asthma. I was quartering a 100mg pill and giving it 4x a day for the last 4 years. A smaller pill at 25mg each is perfect for my needs.

With what is left of this drug it will be priced based on limited supply and high demand. I'm on week 2 of using an inhaler on my dog while knowing I have a limited supply of pills left. I could tell that the relief wasn't as predictable using the inhaler but it gives me a chance to experiment and adjust the timing to find what proves to be the best option for her tiny body. On the bright side, I thinks it's going to work. Purchase a spacer with a mask to make it less stressful and allow normal respirations at your dog's pace rather than being overwhelmed directly from an inhaler. There are good YouTube videos on how to do this.

Whatever is left in pharmacies must be running out. My compounding pharmacy just upped the price of my dog's 200 mg by $8 per 30 day supply. It makes me so angry!

I was using the 100mg for my 22lb dog. Now I have to call around and see who has what dosage. My vet wrote an Rx for the 300mg as I found a Costco with 250 of them. I split them in thirds (not an easy task) but they only charged me $125.00 (50 cents per pill) so was able to pay that amount, and stretch out the dosage. If you have a Costco nearby, they might have it since they deal in such high volume. You'll just have to ask your doctor or vet to write a script to grab all that they have wherever you find it.

All my sources for Theophylline 100mg ER for my 6# dog have gone away. No one has it. My dog is now on an inhaler of Ventolin HFA 90 mcg, or 1 puff per 12h. I bought an inhaler spacer with mask made for dogs on Amazon to attach to the inhaler. It's too early to tell how well its working, but it just might. The compounding option required too much dilution and too much liquid for my small dog to drink with each dose of the compound, so that was not an option. Sure hope this does the trick.

I tried the Blink app, but you're right, you have to call and make sure each pharmacy has the Rx or can get it, and since it's discontinued, you still have to call to see who might have leftover stock.

I just started this drug and had a heck of a time getting one fill. It figures this medicine has helped my COPD and now can hardly get it with no explanation. Teva website (who make it) say they cannot explain it. What is going on in this country that we cannot even get medicine anymore????
