Telma-h And A Salt Restricted Diet
UpdatedI'm a 76-year-old diabetic female with blood pressure that is difficult to control. I was originally put on Atenolol 50mg until my medication was changed to Telmisartan + Hydrochlorothiazide (Telma-H). Right now my blood pressure is constantly changing. Please advise. Should I be on a salt restricted diet with Telma-H?

Telma-H contains Telmasartan and Hydrochlorothiazide, it is used to help control high blood pressure.
And yes, if you have high blood pressure, regardless of what medication you are on, you should always restrict your sodium intake. Too much of it can have an adverse effect on your blood pressure, elevating it even more and it can also cause fluid retention, which can lead to congestive heart failure.
The normal recommended amount, for people who have not already suffered congestive heart failure is no more than 2,400mgs of sodium a day.
This means you should always read food labels and look up nutrition information, even for fruits and vegetables and you should avoid adding salt to much of anything.
Processed foods are usually the biggest problem, like lunch meats, cheese and frozen dinners, because they contain very high amounts of sodium.
A healthier diet can also help improve your blood pressure and overall health and by watching your sodium, you end up with a much healthier diet by default, because you don't eat as much junk and processed food items.
