Teens Using Pills Inappropriately?
UpdatedThe blue oval pills were found in my daughters shirts pocket. When asked she said she can't sleep so she's taking them. I feel like there is another reason because why hide them and why carry many of them around in your shorts pocket? Just weird. If anyone had heard of anything other than normal use let me know. Sounds like there are several parents who have had just as odd of and encounter so I'm wondering if they are taking it in another way than recommended

Hello, Trish! How are you?
They are listed as only containing 25mgs of Diphenhydramine, the same ingredient that is in Benadryl that makes people drowsy, when they take it to treat allergic reactions, as reported by the manufacturer.
The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, and sedation.
Thus, my best guess would be that perhaps teens are using it for its sedative like effects, I also know that taking a high amount of it can cause a temporary high like/dizzy feeling that is very intense. I was once given a large bolus of it, via IV, when in the ER due to an allergic reaction that caused my lips to start swelling, I was quite surprised at how intensely high and dizzy it made me feel in that high of a dosage.
I'm not a doctor, so I can only speak from personal experience and from what I've read in the comments of others.
What have the other kids claimed, when confronted by their parents?
Actually, though the effects are short lived, in some ways, it would be ideal for a teen to abuse, since it is readily available over the counter and there is no age restriction on purchasing it.
However, as with any medication, there are dangers to taking too much of it, which the FDA lists as possibly including blurred vision, sudden weight gain, fluid retention, elevated blood pressure, elevated heart rate, and extreme sedation, which could result in coma, or death from respiratory or heart failure.
Thx Vernon. I think she has used them in large dosage for the effects you describe. It's pretty dangerous to do so! We had a chat and I'm taking her to her doctor to discuss ways to relieve stress or if nessisary prescribe something for anxiety rather than having her self medicate. Your answer really helped!
