Taking Hydrocodone For Depression (Page 14)

Updated

I am wondering if anybody else out there has taken Hydrocodone and noticed that symptoms of depression are alleviated? I find that many of today's anti-anxiety and antidepressant drugs come with unpleasant side effects, whereas while taking Hydrocodone they aren't there. The caveat to all of this is that yes, I know that Hydrocodone and opiates in general can be addictive. So long term use would result in withdrawal symptoms. I'm just wondering who else might agree with me on this?

Yes, I have taken my pain med also for depression at the rate of 6 a day for 6 years and have never felt it necessary to raise the dose. Unfortunately I am only prescribed 4 a day so my docs only last for 7mos to a year before I am dismissed and need a new doc. I would think that just never needing to raise the dose would be a good enough reason to let me do that amount since addicts take more and more to their detriment.

To all that feel Hydrocodone helps with depression, I hope none of you live in the state of NY. New laws regarding prescribing controlled substances may prohibit your ability to continue with present medications. All prescriptions are sent directly to pharmacy by computers. The directions for dosing are determined by "drop downs" in the program. This will eventually be adopted by all states in a federal attempt to reduce the prescribing of controlled substances which in theory could be shared or sold with others. It's scary of those posting here that depend on medications to get through the day.

Just asking Spyz, what do you do when you run out? Will the Dr give you another script or must you wait until the correct date to ask for a refill?. However, I do understand why you take them like that.

Lucy, i wait till my next appt. every month, for one week I am out of meds. At first it was so horrible with restless legs, lethary, crying, freezing while sweating and of course no sleep..i started rotating when to be out of meds. Since I knew it would be,one week, I chose the week so as not to fail ua's or pill counts, then i split the week. Take three days without any meds, take my meds for a few days, then skip three days and by time it was time for doctors visit, my urine level was good, as well as my pill count. I ruined it last month when I realized that fentanyl and other extended release opiates caused my hypothyroidism and adrenal insufficiency. I weaned off the patch by keeping one 50mcg/h on for a week, then going a week without before replacing it. Of course my breakthrough use increased and I was at the mercy of intense withdrawal and couldn't pick when to abstain. I used them and ran out and well....out of pills was okay since it was time for refill but clean urine of course means im selling my pills, to doctors anyway.. I explained and showed them the two extra boxes I had of the patch and she just rolled her eyes and two days later I got my discharge letter. So basically protocol is more important than patient safety.

I have to lay down on heating pad now that my medications have been taken away by Gov. Scott in FL. Gained 50 lbs. Can't have any social life i'm in so much god forsaken pain just typing this. What happened to torture being illegal in America? Oh that's right, I'm not a terrorist, just disabled from previous denial of medical care from lying thieving medicaid program. Now my hope has been taken away. So yes less pain, less depression, and lower blood pressure.

Hi, I also have taken/tried SO many antidepressants. Currently take Zoloft and Welbutrin. Some days I am still so depressed, that I don't get out of bed. Nust in the previous month have noticed that taking the hydrocodone prescribed for pain relieves my depression. SO glad to hear this from others.

Hi Cynthia, so sorry to hear that you lost your doctor. Don't give up, they are good, compassionate ones out there. Hang in there. Take care

I commend you for ur strategy... Sometimes we have to do what's right for us. I will never understand how the doctors appear that they don't care about their patients quality of life. It hurts me to see how much some doctors have changed their way of thinking. I tried the pain patch.. It did nothing! Taking Tramadol along w/Norco...that's cool but taking Tramadol by itself is worthless. I have to take 3 or 4....and that doesn't really help. It's rough. I do hope you can locate a Dr who truly cares and wants to help you....take care

Okay I have a problem. I take Norco 10/325 for chronic back pain and sciatica. I just got a refill of 90 and I've used them...all. I was in pain and they didn't work at all. I can't get a refill til 3wks. I can get Tramadol but I must take like 4 or 5 and that's not a guarantee they'll work. Pls help. Thanks

Hi, I also get that relief with vicodin......my psychiatrist asked me if I ever did coke? Yes in my late high schools days early 20s....his reply was when first discovered it was used for a antidepressant until people started dying and over dosing from it.....I thought that was really interesting to be told.... I too have tried all antidepressants, combinations of things, etc...I started vicodin in 09 for osteoarthritis and neck injury.... haven't been very depressed either...

Obviously, you do not suffer from chronic depression. It is a chemical problem in the brain that only medication will resolve. It is like any other illness that requires medication. Would you tell a heart patient or diabetic patient or anyone with illness not to take medication?

I think you mean well, but you are mistaken about this. I am very spiritual but that does not mean that if I 'get closer to God or pray or repent' that my problem will go away. You are putting people in danger when you tell them not to take medication for chronic depression. It is not the same as a normal person's low day or feeling blue. Please, before you tell anyone else to 'control' their depression, do some real research.

Hey Linda, Lucy Hooks and everyone. As a 30 year, disabled person dealing with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and chronic pain I've been through many political changes as well as (the new recommended guidelines via the cdc regarding the prescribing of pain meds. We are all different, and to my knowledge none of us are medical doctors. We simply are sharing what has worked for us individually. My concern is for someone to come along and see postings of things that are not true, get so discouraged that could put them over the edge. I know and share things that have worked for me over the years that my treating physician has advised. PLEASE DO NOT STATE THINGS AS FACT THAT ARE OPINION. MEANT IN THE SPIRIT OF HELPING ALL!
BEST WISHES......

I originally posted on this site several years ago about my use of hydrocodone for my depression. It is two years later. I had to stop. I began to feel hollow inside despite the low dose I was taking - my brain wanted more and the more I took, I just felt ill. I thought at first this was an answer to a prayer 20+ years of MDD and anxiety. Anyway, I am not bashing or judging anyone who can manage taking it and keeping it at a level that is helpful - I got to a point about two months ago where I knew I had a problem. I had it prescribed for surgery and had as much as I could get refilled. I never went beyond 4 pills per day even post op. After my post op I was getting by on 1 to 2 pills per day, but the day came where I started feeling numb and hollow and I knew getting a refill at this stage was going to be a challenge. For reference I am a 49y/o female - also going through mid life hormonal changes. What really helped me all around was getting my hormone levels checked and then working with my doctors to restore my very, very low estrogen and non existent testosterone. This did not "cure" me of my desire to take norco, but having my hormones in balance helped with my depression. I still take my depression meds and see a therapist, but I had to stop with the norco as I felt like bc of all the new regulations and because it stopped having it's "therapeutic effect" I had to put that habit to bed. So if you are a woman and you haven't had your hormone levels checked, I would advise it - so many women are misdiagnosed with depression when low hormone levels are a key piece of the puzzle. I understand many women are not able to or afraid to take hormones, only you and your doctor can make that choice. For me having my hormone pellets inserted every three months (estrogen and testosterone) makes me feel like a different person. I am not a health care professional so I don't know what works for everyone, but I have had over 10 years experience dealing with early ovarian failure and the havoc it can cause for your mental health. Norco definitely gives me a boost and helps with depression, but it can be a risky spiral as i recently found out...despite my very best efforts to "control it". Good luck to all who struggle with depression and pain! I know them both well.

I had to quit caffeine when i was pregnant, talk about depressing migraine headaches, lack of energy..Never say never. I did not think pain could get any worse. I just hope Gov. doesn't start making people wait 8 yrs to get prescription for Ice Tea. Yes it is addictive and there are withdrawal symptoms. But i did what i had to at the time for the better good. All by myself common sense is a b*** in America.

Hi Jobe! Good to hear from you...I don't know if anything or someone made a comment and took it to the extreme, but for ME, I just hope that maybe one person has or is going thru the same things I'm trying to deal with. I know how to talk to my doctor but different view points are interesting.

I know they can be addictive but have taken them many times during my life (59 years) and have never experienced any addictive symptoms even after taking for extended periods after major surgery. I am extremely depressed and the antidepressants no longer seem to help. I recently got some lortab after hurting my back. I was amazed at the improvement in my mood and outlook. No problems with taking more than one per day. I am almost 60 years old. Why can't I get the lortab I need. Don't have that many years left. Would be nice if they were happy years.
