I just started taking Levothyroxine 2 wks ago my legs and feet are swollen so bad by nite I can barley walk. They go down a little at nite but swell back. I am taking 25mcg and I am afraid to continue taking this med. Has any one else had this problem?
Re: Marilyn (# 8)
I was on 188 mcg for a few years this was fine but all the sudden my TSH skyrocketed to 18 so now I am on 212mcg and after a few weeks my feet ankles legs and abdomen are very swollen. Dr says congestive heart failure. I believe it is too much Levothyroxine.
I've been taking levothyroxine since 2013 have underwent radioactive Iodine...I experience the opposite of what others go through while taking or not taking this medication. After about a couple weeks off of this medication due to insurance,I go through the worst swelling of feet/ankles legs hand and face and just get really bloated and I have major mood swings which make me not a favorite person...? when I am taking the med,it gives me really bad insomnia..when I stop taking it I sleep like a log but that could be because of how exhausted I become I get nauses and very little appetite and along with my mood swings very depressed and very forget full about things even to where I can't even operate a car.
Re: Eileen (# 111)
What strength did you take of the Maxidd? My ankles, feet, and legs are swelled worse than they’ve ever been. My left calf is twice the size of the right! You were very lucky! God bless you!
Re: zygigirl (# 112)
I have been taking nature thyroid for three months, but now my pharmacy says they can’t get it. Are you having any problem purchasing it? I’m in Massachusetts, where are you? Do you know of anywhere I can get it?
Re: Eileen (# 111)
What is Maxidd? Is it anti-inflammatory? Or for allergies? I googled it and nothing came up!
No, not me. I've been on 50 mcgs. for ? years. I was much better with Levoxyl than Levoxine; wish they had left well enough alone. Don't stop this med. Speak with your Dr. regarding this side effect.
Levothyroxine is the worst thyroid med you can take. After my thyroidectomy in 2010, my endo put me on levo. I thought that I was dying. One night while having dinner out, every muscle in my body went into spasm. I could not get up from the table. I was in so much pain. After a month of being on it, I thought that I did not want to live feeling so bad. I went on the internet and looked around. I finally found a thyroid group that were against synthetic meds like levothyroxine. I researched, joined the group and have not looked back yet. I went on nature thyroid (NT) which is made from pig thyroid. The pig's thyroid is closest to the human thyroid, which means that you are getting everything that your own thyroid used to give you. I suggest that you go and buy the book "STOP THE THYROID MADNESS" VOLUMES 1 AND 2. I guarantee you that when you are finished, you will get off of Levothyroxine forever. You will have all of your questions answered and they will guide you to the thyroid forum that I am on. It was written by a woman who was suffering taking synthetic meds like levothyroxine and Synthroid. These meds are all the conventional doctors want to put you on, because that is all they learned in school. Some doctors are crossing over though because they have learned that those meds do not help us thyroid patients.
Started low dose of Levothyroxin last week and within 4 days my feet, ankles and legs swelled up and my legs felt very heavy. Since it was the only medication change I had, I stopped it. Went to MD and he said he never saw that reaction before. He gave me Maxidd for the edema which was effective with one dose. I think I had an allergic reaction to the levothyroxine.
I have been taking this medicine for about a month, and have found my feet and legs even more swollen than usual..going to speak to my doctor.
I am on levatheroxion been on for years at age 20 or so I had 75percent of thyroid removed all tests were great no need for meds at around age 40 got Lyme's late to find out had for several months now need meds for my thyroid took for years no prob Lyme's caused arthritis in hips and knees and other things are wrong now got swelling in my right leg joints hurt no change in color of leg no pain in skin or muscles also have restless leg been getting worse
I get swelling around my neck in 3 sides. I stoped taking it today. Tomorrow I'm calling an endocrinologist.

Re: sunshine (# 20)
I am taking the 75 pill. My feet are swollen and hurt day and night, so bad at times i cannot walk good. I had no prior foot pain at all before this pill.

I answered you on July 19th (post #103). I explained what I’m going to do and asked if you’d like the info for your Mom? Let me know!
Re: Frankie (# 10)
please advise how increased dosage of thyroxine sodium tablets causes edema and further skin swollen.
Re: Donutlady (# 3)
I do not have a thyroid. Thyroidectomy in 2010. One of the things that I am familiar with is levothyroxin and synthroid. They both are bad news. After surgery I was put on levothyroxin. I literally could not walk due to muscle spasms over my whole body. I complained and was switched to synthroid. That was even worst. I did some looking on the internet and came across a thyroid group. They were totally against the synthetic medications and were taking different kinds of natural medicines. I have been on Naturethroid since then, and have been feeling pretty close to normal. Of course when we don't have a thyroid, we sometimes experience little things here and there, but, nothing like being on those synthetic meds. I suggest that you look for the thyroid forum and ask them questions. They are so knowledgeable. You may have to find a doctor who will write you a prescription for Naturethroid, but it is worth the search. You can find the thyroid forum by searching on google. Good luck to you, but, I think that once you get off of the synthetic meds you will be so much better.
Maura, One of the reasons that I didn't go for those shoes is that they usually are tie shoes and I can't bend to tie shoes or for anything. I wear Easy Spirit traveltime or others that I can slip my feet in. There is a place that is less expensive that I may try. They would take my right shoe and take off the sole, then add 1 1/2 inches of leather, then put the original sole back on. Maybe as a cheaper alternative your Mom might like to have a different shoe that she likes that is more fashionable done this way for a different look! If she is interested, I could mention the website's name! And thank you for your info and interest!
My doctor had me on 88mcg of levoxyl and .05 of t3. I couldn't convert in march, and if it didn't work right, he was going to start me on armor thyroid on my next appointment. I was having all kinds of adverse effects and finally he told me to go off all thyroid meds and only take armor thyroid from now on. I went off them the next day but didn't have any armor.
So I assumed that he meant he would give it to me on my next appointment. I have been on thyroid meds for years and never stopped before. I was off them for 13 days when my daughter came to take me for my appointment. I had such misgivings about her visit. I don't know why? She also has hashimotos thyroiditis, and later told me she has been on armor but is having adverse effects and will have to change when she goes home. She did so much for me, but all I did is complain! Why, I didn't know? She still kept calm the first day, and helped me as much as possible. She has always known a lot more about my moods with the thyroid than I did, and if we argued would tell me over the phone to get my thyroid checked. I was agitated but didn't know why? On the day of my appointment, she took me and then we went to find somewhere to eat.
I didn't drink as I'm on pain meds for chronic pain with fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and a few other things. Something happened to me after dinner unrelated to her, that traumatized me, before we left the restaurant. I forgot to mention that my doctor was very upset with me for stopping my thyroid meds, and not taking the armor that he prescribed. Come to find that the pharmacy never informed me, but informed my doc. that my insurance wasn't paying, and were waiting for a reply?? Going back to being traumatized, I did not remember any more of the ride home and no recollection of even how she got me in the house, only later remembering that she put my eyeglasses in her pocket, why, I didn't know. My next memory was, I was sitting in my house and she walked in from I don't know where? She sat down on the sofa and asked if I was still against having strangers come in my house to work or take me to appt.'s? I said "Yes, but I don't mean you!" She got up and said, that's it then, this is goodbye for good, I won't be back!" goodbye! I remained passive, and I knew I should say something, but I couldn't think! She was leaving and my heart was breaking. We have always been close and I didn't know what just happened? I called on the phone and cried out that I loved her more than anything, and please don't say goodbye! That was weeks ago and I haven't heard anything from her. I've been on armor since then.
I've just started getting some memories of what might have happened on the way home? After she left I did remember terrible things that she said to me that she never said before, vicious things. I must have said some terrible things too! I know she said I was a rotten mother and I said, "Well, you were a rotten kid" but she might have said that in the restaurant. Everything must have happened on that ride home. I must have said something for her responding "Why didn't you just give me up at birth?" just bits and pieces. I had to because of no thyroid meds, but I tried to call an she has blocked my numbers, and also left my facebook page. I also forgot to mention that I was getting along pretty good with my other daughter, but when my daughter was visiting, she called the first night and after that bad night she told me her sister came out to meet her, and has been cold and uncaring to me.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'm coming out of the trauma and doing a lot of crying. From day one my oldest daughter who knows what is going on, won't discuss any of it with me. She has never been understanding in the past, and has always had a love/hate relationship with me, but not my other daughter! My heart is breaking every day. The stress really doubles my pain. Sorry this is so long, but it is the first time I have been able to write about it. Would someone who knows, please tell me what not having thyroid meds for 15 days must have done to me?
My edema did not start untul I ran out of the Levothyroxin..The doctor will not renew the prescription without s office visit..His fee id $135 and I have no insurance any longer
Is there t3 and t4 in Armour ? My Dr has me on 5mg of t3 and 88mg of levoxyl which
is the T4. I will go back 6/22 after being on
this since March, and he'll be putting me on Armour if the results are no good. The swelling has gone down some in my legs, but as soon as I'm on my feet, the swelling goes up in my feet and ankles!
Hi all, I also struggled with all sorts of symptoms for the past 8 years. I will share some things that helped me get almost back to normal in hope to save everyone else the pain.
I had my thyroid removed and now I am on 150mcg levothyroxine. I had side effects like:
- anxiety & panic attacks
- easy to get tired
- trouble sleeping
- muscle cramps
- joint pain
- inflammation
- mood swings
- depression
Doctors were for the most part ignorant as long as the blood tests were fine. I did complete blood work (not only thyroid) and looked perfect but I was feeling like crap. I tried myself multiple things to improve my life quality and the things that worked are:
1. Try different brands of hormones, even though all have levothyroxine, the body reacts differently to each one. The best I found for me is Levothyrox [Image]. At first I was on Euthyrox and it was completely bad. This helped improve things by 20%
2. Split the dose during the day. I take 150 as 25 in the morning, 50 before lunch, 50 before dinner, 25 before sleep. Also at lunch I take it with a complex supplement of magnesium, calcium, D3, B6. This helped improve things by 20%
3. Exercise to burn all the extra adrenaline. Gym, sports & jogging work very well, yoga also helps, but better to have action exercises. This helped improve things by 20%
4. Eat properly. I gave up all animal protein a couple of months ago and that has been going very well so far. No refined sugar, less salt, no dairy, no junk/fried food, no alcohol is a must. Meat I choose to gave up for moral reasons but try to reduce at least. Plant-based food is what I eat (fruits, legumes, veggies, smoothies, juices, grains, seeds). There are plenty of resources online for plant-based cooking recipes. This helped improve things by 20%
5. Try to get good sleep. For me, the sleep quality decreased on this medication. Get a quiet, dark room, try some stretching before sleep. Use plant-based tea/drinks to help you get deep sleep. I also use an anti-inflammatory cream for some muscles that ache. This helped improve things by 20%
Good luck and I hope my experience is helpful.
