Surprising Side Effects

Started using Symbicort with aerochamber couple days before Txgiving, in accordance with Dr.'s advice (first time user) - I've lost 1/3 of breathing capacity and developed asthma from exposure to toxic mold. First time I used it, felt trembley, nervous - like I was on amphetamines. However, did relieve tightness in chest and improved breathing. Persisted in spite of side effects - as days went on, Symbicort was seeming to help less and less. Also, the tone of my voice changed and was tremulous. Yesterday was the straw that broke the camel's back - I felt short of breath, very nervous and shaky - to the point where I considered a visit to the ER. Heart was also racing. Next day called the doc - explanation was "some people have a paradoxical reaction" (my interpretation of this explanation is that this medicine can actually have an opposite effect - make a condition worse, rather than better). My reaction is to throw the poison out and never use it again. I'll stick with the albuterol, thank you. Doctor had said I'd be pleasantly surprised by Symbicort - I was surprised alright! - felt like I mightv'e died from that medicine.

I had similar side effects: jittery, weak, upset stomach within 1/2 hour of taking Symbicort. Later in the day I would develop a bad headache. And after 5 days I started having double vision in my left eye. Dr said, "obviously, Symbicort is not for you." Done with it.
Re: Powderfoot (# 5)
I think you are correct, it's the medicine. My 10year old daughter has those exact symptoms and experiencing strong panic/anxiety attacks. I took her off of the medicine three days ago and she is still having those attacks (can't even take her out to have fun). I see that's it's been awhile since you posted this, how are you now and did you get off of symbicort? If so, how long did withdraw effects last?
I have taken simbacort for seven months, I was feeling very very confused,my mind was racing,my heart bounding out of my chest, I did not know what was happening to me.. I have other MEDS,that I have taken before simbacort. I called the doc.And said I can't take steroids! Simbacort has steroids in it,and over time was making me rage..So I told them to find me something else,to open my airways to breathe..The pharmacy helped me.pretty bad!" I am worried now because I don't feel to well,, I think I am having withdrawals, the doctor said no.What do you all think?
Hello - Thanks for your informative message. I have actually undergone mold allergy tests which confirm I'm allergic. Unfortunately, although I vacated the property months ago, my symptoms didn't improve, but worsened. I also have the second opinion of an MD/specialist/pulmonologist. Since I had no breathing problems before exposure, and no history of asthma, and since the new inhaler (Qvar) is helping, this confirms the asthma diagnosis. Guess I'm one of those people who has long term health effects from mold exposure.
Hello - Thanks for sharing - I sure hope you'll soon be feeling much better. Before I developed asthma, I always dealt with medical issues by consulting my MD/homeopath, and lived a strong healthy life using homeopathic remedies and vitamin supplements (also eating nutritious foods). In my case now, I have no choice but to use a corticosteroid inhaler. Now I'm using Qvar - breathing has improved and much less side effects. In future, once I'm stabilized, will investigate homeopathic for my asthma. Have in general always been anti-pharmaceuticals, for good reason I think. I guess in some cases their use is unavoidable. Take good care.
I feel the same. Been on it for 3 weeks and feel dreadful, anxious, scared, mucus in throat with constant need to cough. My doc said to come straight off and stick with the salbutimol so will see how I go. Never had asthma before but doc thinks I might have it after 3 weeks of horrendous bronchitis. I hope nothing comes back
Hello, Fannie! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about the bad experience you had.
However, if your doctor has said that your condition has developed due to toxic mold, you may want to consult another doctor for a second opinion. The whole issue of toxic mold has been blown way out of proportion and studies have shown that it's nowhere near as toxic a people think and generally only causes problems for those that are allergic to it and only during immediate exposure. When the exposure stops, their symptoms clear up rapidly.
What type of doctor have you been seeing?
