I have been on this medication since tuesday (and have not experienced any side effects) when I thought my wound was infected, but it was not. My doctor gave me about 25 pills to take as a precaution to avoid it getting infected in the future. If I do not take the pills for 36 hours, will I be able to drink alcohol without having side effects? Also, what is the likelihood of my wound getting infected if I do not take the antibiotic for over 48 hours? ## Hello, Colleen! How are you? It is really best to abstain from alcohol, while taking any prescription medication. When you imbibe while on an antibiotic, it can cause worsening of the side effects, so you may experience nausea, dizziness and drowsiness. It can cause one drink to affect you as if you'd had 2 and so on. And taking a br...

I have not taken sulfamethoxazole since Wednesday. Can I safely go out and have beers Saturday night? ## According to The University of Maryland Medical Center (umm.edu / drug interaction tool), taking Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim with alcohol may cause serious side effects, including but not limited to a racing or pounding heart beat, sweating, severe flushing and rapid breathing. Since everyone is different there's virtually no way of knowing if you'll still be safe (even with a few days gap), but I would speculate that if you exercise caution and drink responsibly that you'd probably have nothing to worry about. Have you discussed this with your prescribing doctor?

Can I take Sulfamethoxazole if I'm allergic to Metronidazole? I'm sick (with diarrhea) but want to make sure I won't get sicker. ## They are different medications, but there is always a chance that you may discover other medications you are allergic to, according to NIH warnings. Diarrhea can be a normal side effect of antibiotics, so that may also worsen. You could also experience nausea, dizziness, headache, and non-allergic skin rash. Has there been any change? Are you on any other medications? Do you suffer from any diagnosed medical conditions?

My 12 year old 106lb daughter was prescribed this today by her dr. for an infection on her arm. I was reading the side effects and was getting nerves and it also didnt list the dose on the bottle just said take it 3 times a day for 10 days. I called the pharmacy and the doctors and they both said that the dose is 800 and the pharmacist said that when they ran it through their computer it didnt raise any red flags with the dose. But all the info ive been reading it says its usually taking 2 times a day every 12 hours. Im kind of nerves about weither this is to much for her to be taking. I want to long-term store sulfamethoxazole for potential emergency use. What is the PRACTICAL shelf-life of this antibiotic? Forget about the manufacturer's statements. I want a real-world shelf life and storage instructions. ## From what I could gather, the estimated shelf life of the oral suspension and tablets are both 5 years. The manufacturer's storage instructions also suggest keeping it at room temperature and out of direct sunlight (below 86 degrees fahrenheit), to help prevent further degradation. According to a Harvard Medical School family health article, most types of medications are actually safe to use up to 10 to 15 years after their supposed expiration date listed by the manufacturer. However, there are some antibiotics in the Cycline class, which can be dangerou...

If you think you have an infection that requires an antibiotic, it would be best to see your doctor for a new prescription. I am itching all over from a reaction to Bactrim DS. Can I take a Percocet with it? How does it interact? ## Percocet will not do anything to stop the itching. It is an opiate narcotic that is used to alleviate pain. The FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation and dry mouth. As to the itching, you might be allergic to the Bactrim DS, so it would be best to see your doctor and have this checked out. Such allergies tend to worsen with repeated exposure, so you may need to switch to a different antibiotic. How are you doing, now? Has there been any change?

I am taking this medication along with levothyroxine for my thyroid and xanax for anxiety. Is it possible that these drugs mixed together along with sudafed can cause a false reading for methamphetamines on a swab test? ## It is highly possible that it was just caused by the Sudafed. The Pseudoephedrine in some of their formulations has been known to cause false positives for various types of Amphetamines, including Methamphetamine, since it is actually a distant relative. Are there any other comments or questions? ## Can sulfamethoxazole cause you to fail a hair follicle drug test for Methamphetamine?

Can I take ip 272 antibiotics for infected skin boil? And up to how many antibiotics can I take in a day? ## I am 26 years old. I have ampicillin tryhydrate capsule 250 mg. How many milligrams of ampicillin can I use for the boil? ## @Daniel, IP 272 is identified as Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim DS (800 mg / 160 mg). And the answer your question is yes, this antibiotic in particular is often prescribed for tissue infections such as boils. However the protocol for proper dosing and administration should probably be left for your prescribing doctor to decide, based on the severity of the infection and other important factors. @Wale, From what I've researched, Penicillin derived antibiotics such as Ampicillin trihydrate are widely prescribed for treating boils. However, like Daniel...

I had a cold but now I have lingering chest congestion that builds up in lumps in my throat (thick slimy) and gags, choke, and make me feel like its drowning me when I am sleeping - I have to jump up out of bed and cough ad spit it out.
