I got bitten by a spider and the hospital gave me Sulfamethoxazole to take for 7 days. How long will it be before the redness goes away so I can go back to work? The red spot is about the size of a quarter. Thank you. ## Hello, Carmel! How are you? The general rule with antibiotics is that if they are working you shouldn't see any worsening after taking them for a full 24 hours and you should start to see improvement after taking them for a full 3 days. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Where can i get a prescription for these? I have a UTI. My vagina is red and also is itching. I need relief quickly. Please help me. I'm in port shepstone.

My mom started this med on 11/28. Today 11/29, her legs felt week and the dr said it is unlikely the med I gave her tonight and I am worried to death. I am afraid something might happen cuz of this med. ## That might be a side effect of the medication, according to the FDA, she may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. It is usually nothing to worry about and things should go away, a week or so, after she finishes her course of treatment. However, if it becomes severe, or dangerous, it would be best to consult her doctor, again. Is she on any other medications?

How are you? Those can also be side effects of this antibiotic, as reported by the FDA, so it's really hard to say what's causing these symptoms. Have you consulted your surgeon? The FDA lists its other typical side effects as possibly including dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea.

Hey I have a boil on the left side of my buttocks and its almost ready to burst can I take this pill now while its almost there?. The pill is pretty big and white I'm 23 it kind of scared me. Should I take half of it first or just the whole thing? How long do I take these pills? ## You should only take it, if your doctor has directed you to do so, if not, then it may not be the right medication to treat whatever has caused this issue, or you may not have enough of it to fully eradicate the infectious bacteria, which creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Has the boil been cultured?

I would like to take Excedrin for a headache to today. Can I take w the above drug. If not, what could I take? ## Hello, Jonsey! How are you? Actually, the FDA cautions against combining the Aspirin in the Excedrin with this antibiotic, because they can increase the efficacy of each other, which may be dangerous, in some cases, due to the fact that they could reach toxic overdose levels. Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, insomnia, and stomach irritation. What has your doctor advised?

I had a pillar cyst removed from the back of my head and the wound got infected, so the doctor prescribed this med to clear it up. Wow! I have never had an allergic reaction to anything in my life, but this drug knocked me for a loop. I thought I had the stomach flu one day--kept trying to throw up, diarrhea, stiff neck, headache, feverish, affected my vision. I slept the entire day. I stopped taking the med because my stomach wouldn't tolerate anything. The next day, I started to feel better, so started back on the med and the symptoms came back with a venegaence--. that's when I looked up the side effects and called the doctor. I got into the shower after that and noticed I had a horrible rash all over the upper part of my body. It's been almost 24 hours since I stopped ta...

Friend needs help. Treated with this medication for infected skin strep. Has fever to the point of chattering teeth, major body aches, extreme fatigue, splitting headache, diarrhea. Went to doctor who just told him not to take meds anymore. Any suggestions on how to help? ## Hello, Cliff! How is your friend doing? Unfortunately, those can be side effects of this medication and, once it is discontinued, the only thing that will help is time. I had a bad allergic reaction to it several years ago and it took about 2 weeks for all of the symptoms to go away. If his doctor approves, some Benadryl may help with some of the symptoms, as well as Imodium for the diarrhea. Beyond that, it's just a waiting game. However, as explained by the NIH, such side effects or allergic reactions tend to ...

can you give to pigs for antobiotics for wounds ## Hi Lisa, IP 272 is reportedly identified as Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim DS (800mg/160mg). From what I could gather, this antibiotic is not FDA-approved for veterinary use. However I have read about several cases of veterinarians still prescribing Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim DS for cats and dogs... Pigs on the other hand, I have no idea. But what I would recommend doing is disclosing all of your animal's medication history to the veterinarian in order to better determine whether Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim is the most appropriate form of treatment. I hope this helps!

Is it safe to take sulfamethoxazole/tmp when it expired 3 years ago? Is it toxic or does it lose some of its effectiveness? ## Hello, Lee! How are you? No, it does not become toxic, but yes, it can lose some effectiveness, so it may not fully eradicate the infectious bacteria, which means that it may develop antibiotic resistance. Thus, it would be better to see your doctor for a new prescription. The FDA lists the typical side effects of most antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?
