I was just wondering how long this drug has been on the market for UTI"s or if it's fairly new? ## Based on my research, The FDA states that Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim was approved around 1980-1985 from various manufacturers. This antibiotic however, is used for a variety of bacterial infections (not just UTI's), so I'm sure people were using it for all sorts of infections at that time. My 2 children who have Cystic Fibrosis were put on sulfameth-trimeth for 21 days at 18.5 ml twice daily, they both weigh around 30-33 lbs! Why would they be put on such a high dose for so long ? ## According to nih.gov, "People with cystic fibrosis may take antibiotics only when needed, or all the time. Doses are usually higher than normal." My two month old was proscribed this medicine. I feel she is sleeping way to much even for a two month old. Has anyone else had this problem? ## According to the dosing & administration guidelines, this medication is contraindicated in infants less than 2 months of age. Since your child is borderline on this age requirement, I'd question why the doctor decided to choose this drug over less riskier options? In my honest opinion, Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim is a very powerful drug to be giving a 2 month old, who's immune system is still developing. The number of potentially severe side effects is what really draws a lot of people away from this particular antibiotic. ## I am very very concerned about the side effects of this med. The dr gave it to me for upper respiatory ( possible viral infection) i take other meds for panic disorder. My 87 father was prescribed Sulfamethoxazole after being diagnosed with urinary/prostate infection. He has taken it for only one day but he experienced weakness, muscle aches in legs and today he woke with fever. Of course, doctor took him off meds and did not think the fever was related to prostrate issue or "sulfa" meds. Should this be taken with food or just water? ## This is a generic for Bactrim and, according to the monograph, there isn't a preference. However, it is well known that this antibiotic can be very rough on your stomach, so if it were me, I'd take it with a meal, or small snack to avoid the nausea and pain it can cause. My wife has taken her first dose of sulfamethoxazole and it really has not been meshing well with her body at all. She is going through different phases about every half an hour. First starting off really uncomfortable with scared feelings. mixed with some laughter. She has been having the shakes and I am getting a little worried. She is only 100 pound and is taking the H49 800/160 mg pill. Has anyone had these issues before? Any info would be greatly appreciated. ## I'm very sorry that's she had such problems. Can you take it with mexolicam for nausea I taken sulfamethoxazole for urinary infection but I have nauseas e lost apetite so maybe I cold take mexolicam for nausea e pain ## Meloxicam will not do anything to help with nausea, as a matter of fact, it could actually just make that worse, since it can also cause it as a side effect. Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory that's used to treat pain, fever and swelling, other side effects to it may include dizziness, headache and stomach irritation.
