Suboxone And Valium

I have been on valium for approximately 12 years for severe anxiety and because of a severe back problems i was also put on percocet for years. Someone told me about suboxone. They said suboxone will help with the pain. So i went to a sub doc and told him i was on valium. He did not give me a U/A till months later. Doc said you are on a benzo. l said is that the valiums? He said yes. I said i told you i was on valium. He said you have to go off them. I was told if i go off my valiums i could have a seizure. I have been off the valium for a week. I am shaking and can't sleep. I feel sick. I was doing great with suboxone and valium. Now i am just sick. Please, someone help me.
Re: Trissy32 (# 7)
Actually Suboxone is a pain killer and is available in patches which are placed on the affected area.
Don't just stop Valium you are in danger of a seizure you have to reduce slowly.
Re: SheriAmore (# 55)
The naloxone creates a ceiling effect to prevent respiratory failure due to the suppression effect of narcotics and opiods, so it's very difficult to overdose on Subaxone unless abused which isn't related to those responsibly treating their chronic pain issues.
I get the concern by physicians about mixing the diazepam with the sub because of the depressive reaction in the body, but also if they are regulated and monitored by pain management or a physician that works with the patient like I have going on, there are no problems with death due to respiratory failure.
When another pain management clinic had me dosed up on morphine and dilaudid there were times I was afraid to sleep because of fear I wouldn't wake up the next day. I took myself off all that crap, found a great family physician who listened and worked with me, put me on Suboxone strips, allowed me to stay on a small dose of valium for sleep and my body healed enough that a maintenance dose gives me dignity and quality of life. One things I do appreciate with my new doctor is that he requires the label to state that the subaxone is treating chronic pain so there is no stigma of drug abuse connected to it
Re: Kat (# 1)
Not true
I am a chronic pain patient in Pain Management and use subaxone for spinal and nerve pain. I've been on opiods of all kinds and this is so much better for me and I also use a low dose of valium to offset tremors and muscle spasms from black mold contamination which caused neuromuscular damage Its been a godsend.
I don't understand why they haven't tapered you slowly down instead of forcing you to withdraw You are correct about triggering seizures if abruptly stopping your regular doses.I went off Ativan and on Valium about 5 years ago to counteract black mold symptoms that wreaked havoc on my nervous system I never took more than 6 mg a day and now use 1/2 mg at night for sleep, but tapered myself at my own pace I recently signed on with a pain management doctor who put me on subaxone for chronic pain and I use 1-2.5mg daily strip He was not concerned with me using the valium at the dosage my body has used all these years. In my case, He trusted me and knows I am knowledgeable about drugs, addiction and interactions Even with me being in my late 60's the benefit outweighs the risks
I've tried stopping the valium as well, but the tremors and stiffness return to the point that my body seizes up and I can't function normally. I think you may want to search fit for a more proactive doctor and see if they will work with you instead of projecting their own protocols onto you .I have been where you are and it's torture
Best of luck to you
Re: Trissy32 (# 7)
No sub is buprenorphine which is an Opioid analgesic meaning painkiller. yes it's a pain killer it started with TEMGESIC

Yeah I quit cold turkey and I thought after 3. Days I be good . WRONG I was in and out hospital for 3 mouths I thought I going to die ,so I back onSub's I also take Klonopin I'm tramper slow so why fix on problem just to still have the the it anxiety.?
I am on xanax & hydrocodone. My pain management Dr. said I have to give up one or the other. It's so stupid, because I don't take them at the same time anyway. My primary Dr. gave me a drug called buspirone 5mg, to help me get off the xanax. Of course I hated that, but it really helped, to my surprise! Maybe it can help you get off the valium. Good luck.
Joan, why don’t you turn up at the emergency dep saying your life could be at risk and explain to them why, and tell them you need help ASAP. They have to help you, even just to put you in someone’s special care. When I was in the hospital a few months ago there was a man in the next bed to me, it was an assessment ward, I was there because of PE. He was allowed to be walking around freely. I asked him why was he there and he said he had anxiety problems and was in and out when he needed help. That's why I’m suggesting maybe you could do the same. Help to get off these Valium or any others. I got off antidepressants by cutting them down bit by bit. Another suggestion, always go to the pharmacist for information, not the GP. They don’t know about dosages, they only prescribe the medications. You don’t have to suffer these side effects. Go to google too, to the government & medical health pages and read everything about these medications. Then go to the pharmacist.
Re: James (# 56)
Thank you James!! You clarified the Naloxone question. I too, am taking it for Chronic Pain & it's working better than I thought it would. Because alot of the Pain Community is so against it, I didn't know if it would work as well as the other opiate meds I've been on over the MANY years. Actually, for me, it's working even better! Thanks again~
Re: SheriAmore (# 55)
Hello sheriAmore hope your doing well... here are some answers, as far as my knowledge goes. I might have miss represented the phrase habit forming. What I mean is your body will get used to it after taking it for a while and to stop without withdraws you must taper your dosage down. I wasn't meaning you would become an addict, being dependant and being an addict are two different things being an addict means you lose control of usage and abuse it being dependant means you must taper to avoid withdrawal. The naloxone is an abuse deterrent it has a bioavailability of approximately 2 to 6 % if taken sublingually if broken down and injected it goes to 80% it can and does cause withdraw if you do this, not sure about the overdosing factor, now just to clarify the bupenorphrine will cause withdraw itself if taken to soon after an opiate it's way stronger than other opiates so it overrides their effectiveness and actually knocks out all other opiates off your pain receptors. Beyond popular belief Suboxone is an opiate so it can and does help with pain it has helped me superbly. It might not everyone, being called a blocker might not be the correct way to explain it. It helps those of us with chronic pain and addiction issues by keeping us from withdrawing from painkillers and giving us relief from pain at the same time and being controllable. Thanks. Hope this helps you I shared what I know and my opinion good luck and let me know if you'd like to know more. Good luck and God bless.
Re: James (# 50)
Hi. I have a couple of questions about Suboxone because I'm on it for Chronic Pain & it's working well. Here are a couple of things you said --
"Suboxone can and does help with chronic pain; it can also be habit forming, when abused."
Even when NOT abused & taken as prescribed, your body WILL become DEPENDANT on it -- I'm not sure why you said habit forming...Did you mean, if you're on it for addiction, it can become addictive, if abused?? I realize it's different wording, but DEPENDANCE & HABIT-FORMING are different & your average Joe may not understand that!! Also --
"Naloxone is not "just a blocker" but is very strong and overrides any other opiate. The naloxone in it has NO effect unless it's abused (broken down and administered intravenously"
I've always been confused by the Naloxone in Suboxone & wondered how it works so well for Chronic Pain when it's got the blocker in it?? Are you saying that it does NOTHING in the body when taken as prescribed?? And ONLY becomes "active" IF too much is taken OR taken wrong?? Thanks ahead of time for answering my questions!
Valium is harder to come off of than suboxone. You should've been tapered down on the valiun as long as you have been taking them.
Re: Rhino (# 46)
I've been on subs and benzos for many years no problems and did have an addiction problem to opiates no more opiates 6 to 8 mg of Subs valium or ativan i didn't have issues
Re: phil (# 51)
Being honest with your Dr is how you get quality healthcare. Not sure about what kinda people we are. I had trouble for actually obtaining pain relief, as a large number does. Addiction started with legitimately prescribed medication that slowly seamlessly transitions into full blown addiction. I now take Suboxone for chronic pain and my issue with opiate dependency. We are all just people, no matter how we got to the place we are now. Unfortunately, street drugs have never actually came back or went away, they're here, always have been and always will be. What leads legitimate pain patients to these "street drugs" is the constant wishy washy regulations on opiates that leave us high and dry when we build a tolerance and get dubbed drug seekers. Then the selling or "diversion" comes from the financial hardships those who suffer chronic have. We are not treated, we are pacified with painkillers, then labeled junkies when we loose control. It's a viscous cycle with no relief for those who suffer. I've lived the last 25 years of my life with unbearable pain, multiple surgeries, total and partial joint replacements. I've taken ungodly amounts of opiates and actually overdosed a few times, all the while still suffering from the pain. It would never go away. Now I take two 8/2 milligram Suboxone every morning, no withdrawal, my pain is not absent but is controlled and by all means bearable. I had to accept that I'll never be totally pain-free and I cannot successfully treat my pain with opiates. God bless and good luck.
You people must stop being honest with dr's., even if they tell you to cuz that is what happens. Cuz drs all have different opinions on how to treat patients, not with what works and has been working for years. That all started with the *****s that abuse pain killers and overdose or sell them. Then legitimate people such as myself have to suffer. That's why street drugs are coming back and killing us.
Hello Joan, hope you're doing better. Just to clear things up, Suboxone is an opiate. It can and does have the ability to help with pain. I saw a few uneducated OPINIONS here. Fact; Suboxone can and does help with chronic pain; it can also be habit forming, when abused. Another fact: I'm prescribed Suboxone for chronic pain and for my trouble with addiction to opiates. Suboxone is not "just a blocker" but is very strong and overrides any other opiate. The naloxone in it has no effect unless it's abused (broken down and administered intravenously). It is an abuse deterrent. It's not a good idea to mix it with your Valium, in high doses it can stop your breathing. If you told your Dr then he didn't listen, actually he should have checked your pharmacy record before prescribing, even if it's just for pain, generally all Drs will or at least question you on what other meds you take and for the U/A he should have evaluated you at each visit. It is possible to safely take them together but only in low doses and under your primary care physician's supervision. Valium withdrawals are really tough and can last for weeks especially if you've been on them a long time you should never just cold turkey any medicine without first checking with your Dr. I hope you find a comfortable middle ground in this. Chronic pain and anxiety are tough alone but together they are horrible. I wish you luck. Be safe. Hope this helped a little.
Re: Kat (# 1)
Buprenorphine does help with pain. They are different then suboxin. Another name for them is subutex... hag back surgery 6 months ago. Went Percocet 10 to for 4 months to tbd buph..
Re: Curious80 (# 38)
Hello curious80, thanks for the info. It seems on here some get uneducated information or opinions and then viscously defend then till the end. I use Suboxone for chronic pain and addiction troubles. It does work (it contains naloxone). The bio-availability of that naloxone is 2% if taken correctly, but if it's broken down, abused, it turns to 80%. You actually can get a bad case of precipitated withdrawals. My ridiculous question is if a person is taking Suboxone, why would they be taking an opiate or benzo with it? Kinda counter-productive right? That's kinda like taking a laxative with an antidiarrhea medicine. But what do we know right lol. Thanks for the information and God bless.
I've been on Suboxone for over 5years and the main reason I changed to Suboxone was because they told me it was for pain also. It helped, but Suboxone IS NOT for Pain and if you go to the Dr and tell them you want OFF they just stand there w/ their heads up their ass. If I were you I would get OFF the Suboxone, get back on your Valium. I have a severe nervous problem also and I found a Dr. who gives me Suboxone 2X a day and Alprazolam. Believe me, I had to fight for it. I've taken nerve me medication off and on over 10years. So my Dr put me in a 5 day program and WATCHED me and how I did on both medications. You just need to find the right Dr. My I suggest that maybe you go to a Psychologist, along with your PCP of course, believe it or not they could probably help you better than a regular Dr. & they can prescribe the proper medications that you might need. Good Luck!!!
