Spiriva Weight Gain Side Effects (Page 4)
UpdatedI've talked about this problem before concerning the side effects from Spiriva. The only side effect I've experienced was a sudden, and seemingly permanent weight gain. In spite of efforts to lose the weight I've had no success whatsoever. I've gained weight from other medications in the past only to lose it when the medication was discontinued. Not so with Spiriva. It has been almost three years since I've used the inhaler but yet the added weight persists. I should mention that all of the added weight has been on the midsection and nowhere else! To make matters worse has been a disended abdomen to go along with it. I contacted the drug company right after it happened and, naturally, they acted as if it was new to them! I'm not the only one this has happened to. Although a rare side effect it has been a problem for others, the same as mine. This thing is ruining lives, and should be pulled from the market. It won't be though...profits are the name of this terrible game. Bill.
I have been on Spiriva for almost two and half months and have gained 8 horrible pounds around my waist and abdomen. I bloat up like a balloon and eat very little. No matter what I do, weight will not come off. There definitely must be some ingredient in the medication that is causing excessive weight gain. Spoke to oncologist but with no satisfaction regarding this problem. It is very depressing and heartbreaking to see all this fat when I have been 115lbs forever. Spiriva good for breathing but not for our weight.
I have been on Spiriva and Symbicort for almost two years now and have gained weight in my abdomen also. I've tried dieting and lost a few pounds but not in my abdomen. I am a 67 year old female and I look 7 months pregnant. I dread going shopping for clothes because nothing fits me properly with a bulging abdomen. This problem definitely stems from either Spiriva or Symbicort. Weight gain is not listed as a side effect but should be. The drug companies should research these drugs more closely since so many people are complaining of abdominal weight gain.
smell a kick-back??????? I have not heard of a SOUL that takes this stuff that hasn't had the "fat belly" problem
I also gained abdominal weight from either the Spiriva or Symbicort. I tried dieting and losing a few lbs but not in the mid section. I,m sixty seven years old and look seven months pregnant. I dread going shopping for clothes because of this problem. Some of these post claim that the Tiotropium Bromide in the Spiriva causes abdominal distention but weight gain is not listed as a side affect. I,m at my wits end.
I have been taking Breo and Spiriva once a day for about 9 mos. I too have the belly bulge. I went up 2 sizes after gaining 15 pounds. This has put me in a terrible mood and so depressed about my size. I am 69 years old and use to wear a size 10 jean. I walk 5 miles a day plus I am not a sitter. I have tried everything I can think of to loose weight but so far it "ain't happening". I am taking myself off the Spiriva and will be making an appointment with my doctor. I can't tell you how happy I am to find this forum. All of you have given me hope to get this poundage off in time for my 50th HS Reunion. Today is the first time in a long while that I actually feel good about myself.
Not only is it not listed as a side effect, when you call to talk to a representative of the drug company (as I had) they'll tell you that they never heard of it despite the fact that more and more people have told them about it and, like me, might have referred them to this forum. However, I recently received an e-mail survey that asked about my use of Spiriva and how it affected me. I filled it out and, of course, my main complaint was the weight gain. I had also gone onto the Spiriva website a few weeks before I received the survey and complained, and a representative called me in followup. He said they would be looking into it. So, call me a cockeyed optimist, but I think that the survey was the beginning of their actually looking into it! Did anyone else receive the survey?
I am having the same issues with Spiriva....weight gain in the abdomen....I have lost 10 lbs but not in the abs......I am working on another ten and then I will see what happens
Hi there I too have put on nearly 2 stones in weight in the space of 11 months since taking spiriva all around mid section it's horrible a big flabby tummy that looks disgusting hips and back area although I try to keep active I can't seem to get rid of it I am now on antidepressants as I feel down ...I too have said to my GP and he said it was due to stopping smoking ...I'm 65 year old who cared about her appearance before spiriva ..
I was told by my doctor also that weight gain is not a side effect of Spiriva. She claims that the medicine is inhaled and the little bit we inhale only goes into the lungs and does not affect the abdominal weight gain. I find that very hard to believe since there are many people on this site complaining of the weight gain. Doctor also said its my metabolism (slow I guess) I don't know whether to stop the Spiriva on my own or continue it since it does help with my breathing.
According to my pulmonologist, who asked his other patients after he checked this website, it's not only possible but probable. Some of his other patients (besides me) had complained to him about the weight gain on Spiriva and he asked those who hadn't complained probably because they didn't make the connection. It turns out that every single patient on Spiriva has had weight gain to one extent or another. He contacted the drug company himself to report that side effect and also notified the FDA, but apparently nothing has come of it. My primary physician was skeptical until she spoke to the pulmonologist and now we're all working together on the weight problem. In six months, with strict diet and as much exercise I could tolerate due to my leg pains, I've managed to lose a whole 11 lb. out of the 60 I had gained. I'm still working hard to lose more. We're all afraid to switch me to another med again because when I was switched to Symbicort I had an anaphylactic reaction. Therefore, since we don't know what I might be allergic to and Spiriva is very effective in treating my emphysema, I'm stuck with it.
They will tell you that so as to keep selling. It DOES help with breathing BUT.....big belly side effects are very real!! Anybody that claims they've never heard of this has their head up and locked. These Facts are EVERYWHERE!!!
I just wanted to add my voice. Like many, I've googled Spiriva and weight gain and come to this site. I have been on Spiriva for three years and my weight has increased by well over 10kg. It's horrible and embarrassing and nothing I do seems to shift it. I get told by doctors I "should" lose weight, as the extra weight doesn't help my breathing, yet I exercise 6 days a week, eat well and do everything by the book, yet nothing is shifting this weight, it just keeps creeping up and up and up. Bad enough having serious breathing issues without having to also deal with this as a side affect which remains unrecognized by the physicians.
I had an appointment with my Respirologist the other day. Told her I was NOT taking the prescribed Spireva or the Symbicort. She prescribed Breo for me to try - has anyone used Breo? If so, what was your experience with it?
Spiral been taking for 2 years.. my stomach as extended from a 29 inch waist to a 37 inch waist and looking bloated . I've been to gp she said stomach feels ok and you should eat fruit and vegetables, I'm very depressed at the way my midriff looks, it's so uncomfortable I'm not a big eater so it's even worse to cut down food . I've stopped taking spiral today.
What is Spiral? Never heard of it, so are you sure you're taking Spiriva and not some other medication?
HELLO FROM CANADA. I HAVE BEEN TAKING SPIREVA INHALER SINCE 2012. I HAD A LOVELY FIGURE PRIOR, BUT NOW I AM THIRTY POUNDS UP, AND GOT DIABETES TYPE TWO. I DECIDED THAT THIS IS IT. I AM OFF IT THREE DAYS. I CANNOT TAKE THE DRY MOUTH THAT KEEPS ME AWAKE AND MOST DEFINITELY I DO NOT WANT THE EXTRA POUNDS. SPIREVA IS A DEVIL AND I WILL NEVER TAKE IT AGAIN.
Yes, excess weight is often a trigger for diabetes. I'm borderline and put myself on a strict diabetic diet, so managed to keep my A1c just below the diabetes level. I think if you go on a strict diabetic diet you might be able to do the same. Talk to your doctor and I wish you all the best.
STOP TAKING SPIREVA. START WALKING EVERY DAY AFTER YOU EAT. THE POUNDS WILL COME OFF.
Really? Being on a 1000 calorie diabetic diet and walking on treadmill at 2-4 mph for at least a total of 1/2 hour at least four days a week (depends on how much my legs ache) has enabled me to lose a whole 6 lb. in 1-1/2 years, and none of it from the abdomen where Spiriva weight gain seems to settle. And I can't stop taking Spiriva - I like to breathe. I had an anaphylactic reaction to another inhaler and every alternative to Spiriva has at least one of the medications that gave me that anaphylactic reaction or is a steroid, which is known to cause weight gain. So please, stop being so righteous because in my case (and quite possibly in the case of many others contributing to this forum) your "solution" has zero merit.
Has anyone who posts on this site tried to contact the FDA? I tried doing it online but it kept booting me off. When I have some time I will try to get a phone number and report Spiriva weight gain as a side effect.
