Spiriva Weight Gain Side Effects (Page 5)
UpdatedI've talked about this problem before concerning the side effects from Spiriva. The only side effect I've experienced was a sudden, and seemingly permanent weight gain. In spite of efforts to lose the weight I've had no success whatsoever. I've gained weight from other medications in the past only to lose it when the medication was discontinued. Not so with Spiriva. It has been almost three years since I've used the inhaler but yet the added weight persists. I should mention that all of the added weight has been on the midsection and nowhere else! To make matters worse has been a disended abdomen to go along with it. I contacted the drug company right after it happened and, naturally, they acted as if it was new to them! I'm not the only one this has happened to. Although a rare side effect it has been a problem for others, the same as mine. This thing is ruining lives, and should be pulled from the market. It won't be though...profits are the name of this terrible game. Bill.
I have and so has my pulmonologist - no replies so far and as far as we can tell nothing has come of it.
Yes I ment to say spiriva just a typing errors, for the second time spoke with doctor she said definitely not it acts In Your lungs and only a small particle will go to your stomach I was examined she said it seems like indigestion , she said you have a lot of gas, prescribed lanzaporsal for indigestion it's so annoying that she did not listen to what I was saying, she asked what website I got this information she said she will look into it, she won't as she was not interested
This is just an opinion, but I speak from the experience of previously having had physicians who wouldn't listen to me so I "fired" them! I now have a pulmonologist and a primary care physician who DO listen. Both have checked this website at my request and the pulmonologist has even contacted both the drug company and the FDA. My advice to you would be to either get your physician to listen or find a new physician. BTW - Ask her how steroid inhalers cause weight gain (a known side effect) as they, like Spiriva, act on your lungs and only a small particle will go to your stomach.
I have been on spiriva for 2 years and I've gained 45 lbs. I also have another side effect that doctors said it was probably from not drinking enough water, but I have been getting sever cramping in my muscles, you know the kind when your toes get really kinked and look deformed, well that's what I get all over my body all the time and even when I yawn, I will sometimes pull a muscle in my throat area. As far as the weight gain, I asked if these puffers (advair, Spiriva and sabutamol) contain steroids and the answer was no, now that I hear about the rest of you, I know it's not quite normal to gain all this weight. I dieted and exercised and I have now given up, my husband says I am fine the way I am and to accept it.
Throughout all these posts I've never seen one before that mentioned muscle cramps from Spiriva. Muscle cramps most often come from lack of potassium and/or magnesium and/or potassium in your diet. Diuretics taken for high blood pressure can deplete those minerals. Your doctor is also correct - not drinking enough water can cause a state of slight dehydration which can result in muscle cramps.
as far as the muscle cramps, I am just wondering if this is a Spiriva side effect, but it doesn't sound like it is. Anyway, I am stopping Spiriva today, the weight gain is hard on my breathing.
That's up to you and I hope you're not allergic to any of the other inhalers used for treatment of emphysema, like I was. And if your doctor puts you on a steroid inhaler please be aware that weight gain is a known side of effect of steroids.
Lise - You might want to talk to your Dr. about Breo Ellipta. I have been using it for a month now and find it far superior to Symbicort and Spiriva. This is an inhaler, used for treating emphysema.
Shay, I will talk to my Dr. about Breo....I am also on Advair (500- twice a day) for COPD.
I use Novo Salbutamol for a 'rescue' inhaler, so, only occasionally. I use the Breo once a day. I find almost instant relief from the Breo - am able to breathe much deeper than without it. I don't know anyone else who has tried Breo so am interested to know what you think...if you do try it, please post your experience.
I will let you know, it will take aprox 3 weeks to see my Dr. but I will keep you posted. I am 53 years old, is this an average age for COPD, cause I feel like I am kind of young for this...
Google "average age for emphysema" - you'll see lots of information.
Wow I am so glad to hear that someone returned to normal! I started dieting & excercising and down to the inhaler every other day. I am going to try to go off completely though as i have not lost a pound. Breathing is about the same.
I have also experienced the abdominal weight gain since starting Symbicort 160/4.5. In addition, have been diagnosed with essential tremors in my hands to the extent that I no longer write with pen or pencil. The bones in my spine are deteriorating, On one hand, I can breathe more easily and on the other. It's killing me.
I have emphysema and used Dulera, Spiriva and Ventolin for 3+ years. I stopped the Spiriva a few months ago- within a few weeks I lost 12 pounds very quickly, stomach shrunk down to its correct size and felt hungry in a healthy way for the first time in 3 years. Also my muscles, especially in the neck/chest area, had been 'locking up' painfully and that has now totally disappeared. I thought I had some other undiagnosed condition and had no idea Spiriva was causing that until I stopped. It certainly helped me breathe better but the horrible side effects are not worth it. I Now I use just Dulera and Ventolin (which I have to use a bit more frequently) and I'm breathing better than I have in 3 years.
I quit Spiriva 2 months ago, and I am glad to hear about Susan that you had muscle problems, I had muscle spasms everywhere, really bad ones and the doctor told me to drink more water, and I know that wasn't the case, but now I am convinced that it was the Spiriva. I no longer have muscle spasms. I posted the muscle problem on this sight, but Susan is the first one to have experienced the same problem. I have not lost any weight due to gallbladder surgery but I will resume as soon as things are back to normal and I will keep you posted.
We know that steroid inhalers cause us to gain weight but try to convince my pulmonologist of this. As I stated before in another post, she said there was too little steroid in it to warrant any weight gain.
Quite a number of people posting on this forum (including me) have contacted the drug company. I also told my pulmonologist and my primary care physician about this forum, they both checked it out, and then they also contacted the drug company. Everyone who has contacted the company has received the same reply - they never heard of the weight gain problem before! They did tell some of us that they'd look into it but since nothing has been done as far as adding the possibility of weight gain to the side effects statement I doubt they've done any further investigation.
NO NO........The're not gonna investigate!!!!!! It just might be true!!!!!!!!
Hi Peta, I too have been on Speriva for 15 months along with Seritide and I have gained 25kgs, mostly all in the stomach. I am unable to exercise but watch every mouthful and write down every day what I eat and drink, even a glass of water makes me feel extra bloated. The weight gain is very depressing and also impedes on my breathing. I am on oxygen as well, it does help finding this site (by accident) and knowing there are so many others in the same boat.
