I need to know of any side effects that may occur while taking this medication.

I just took one pill of bactrim and started having muscle pain all over and barely able to walk. Fever also. Im just not taking any more of that pill. But this joint pain is killing me! Thinking if i should go to ER.

Just want to give a quick update on my progress. It is currently day 4 off of the Bactrim DS after taking 2 doses in 1 day. I was having pretty strong anxiety and today it feels slightly better. I also have been having insomnia for the past 3 nights. I'm taking melatonin and Benadryl to try to help put me to sleep. That worked the first two nights but last night I didn't sleep at all. I hope that these two side effects start to lessen soon as being this tired is causing additional problems with memory and happiness. I've noticed that most people don't update their reviews on these sites ever and I hope its because they have completely recovered and just want to forget this ever happened, but if anyone reading this has recovered or feels much better or worse over a period of time, please share that with everyone as it is peace of mind for people to see an end to their suffering or at least know that they are not alone. People who recovered years ago passing words on to those whos side effects just started. Anyways I will check in here again soon. I hope next time with better news, but if not we'll still make it in due time. God bless all of you suffering out there. Pray, for yourself and all of the rest of us out here! Thanks.

i took bactrim today for first time for UTI. within one dose i had severe burning and itching in just the left foot. i didnt even take another dose. it is still red and swollen - just there though. i am going to calll the dr. tommorow.

I stepped on a board with 3 nails in it and to prevent infection, I was prescribed Bactrim. After I take the meds, I feel gross or sick on my stomach a little. I know that is a side effect, which is ok. My problem is, about an hour after I take it I get so mean! Mad, yelling, snappy...just plain mean. 3 days into it I wasn't so snappy, and thought ok, i'm getting use to it so I took it the 4th day. That was crazy! That night in bed my husband said I would just scream as loud as I could, off and on, for 2-3 hours! I had some really crazy nightmares but when I was woke up by my husband my attitude was so sweet What honey? what do you mean? I'm not scared sweetie. It's ok, go to bed (Not to mention I felt like someone was watching me over my shoulder the night!)

I swear I'm not crazy, lol. This has never happened until I took Bactrim...btw, I didn't take them anymore after that night; I had the dr. prescribe different meds for me.

People are out there telling their stories to make other people aware of the dangers. COURTESY! Although you may not have experienced the same side effects of others, I think the negative remarks should be kept to yourself.. No need to beat people down when they are already lying down!

Bactrim DS was the worst thing I've EVER had to go through! Upon finishing, I developed a bad cough. I then became so weak I couldn't lift my limbs and slept 18 hours a day. I developed a terrible headache, nausea,fever, chills. The chills lasted about a week, everything else lasted almost 4 weeks! I thought I was going to die. The hospital acted as if I were a crazy person, because " nobody has ever had this kind of problem and its a highly used medication" BULL! My bloodwork indicated poor kidney function (which tested fine weeks later)I'm only posting in case this is happening to somebody else..because I thought I was never going to feel better and I did.

Per a Pharmacist friend: "10 days is typical but in rare cases it can persist for months, even years."
Obviously with minimal research WE now know that this is not rare for it to last months. I'm 68 days out from my last dose (only took 4 doses total). I'm still very reactive to the sun swelling & rash come in various locations.
Auto-immune response is now suspected & I'm pursuing non-western medicine to hopefully prevent an auto-immune disease.

It is 9/12 and my 17 year old daughter took 5-1/2 days of a ten day prescription of bactrim for a uti...she had 1 week of fevers which her doctor said was a virus...when i noticed a rash starting on her chest i took her back to md and he said she had beginning signs of allergic reaction..after going to emergency room and getting liquid steroids and benadryl the next day were at er all day with specialists again stating acute severe reaction to bactrim...she is covered head to toe in sunburn rash and having muscle cramps..she has endured extreme uncomfortability and is out of commission for awhile...this did affect her red, white and platelets as well although todays er visit, her blood count was better, thankfully so far her liver, kidneys are ok..why the hell is this drug still on the market???? we have been a nervous wreck and now have to wait for this horrible drug to get out of her bloodstream....CAUTION to anyone who uses this drug!!!

Hi Ginger, thank you for your reply...it has been three months since my daughters severe reaction to bacterim.. she is getting better with time and yes we too were told that she can NEVER have any sulfa drugs again as it would probably be fatal..my daughter has just turned 18 and now she will have to be proactive for the rest of her life! I cannot believe this drug can be so devastating...we went through Hell....and for the people who have posted ridiculously immature comments about "how these comments makes them laugh" just shows to me how ignorant and uneducated people really are...if I can help just ONE person not to have to go through what we did with our daughter, I can rest easier....my daughter could have died from this reaction it was absolute Hell! Fevers of 104 for a week, sick, total rash over body, anaphylaxis symptoms, feeling like she had to go to bathroom with no control, miserable side effects...also the hospital could not get blood because her blood kept coagulating! they had to get blood from her wrist and literally run it down the hall so it would not clot before they tested it...people need to know that yes i am sure this drug has helped some people but the side effects for many people are extremely LIFE THREATENING! I appreciate your comments and feedback and for those who think this is something to laugh at: SHAME ON YOU!

Bactrim does more harm than good and in most cases causes life threatening reactions. Please ask your doc for a non- sulfa drug. I m a very healthy 30 yr old who was prescribed bactrim. It almost killed me... So I m trying to protect people from taking this deadly drug. It's already banned in the uk .. Readout online if you don't trust me

Hi Josh, It took 3-4 weeks to get the effects of Bactrim out of my system. And there may be some effects that last longer....like aches and pains....mood swings....tiredness. But they do go away. Exercise and vitamin/probiotic supplements help. Do drink lots of water. Eat right and get plenty of sleep. Be sure to tell your doctor about your effects of taking Bactrim and avoid taking it again!

You will be OK as you have not taken it very long. Give it time to get it out of your system. About a week or so.

I started taking Bactrim as I have a systemic staph infection and a brown recluse spider bite too! Very concerned by the warnings on the pharmaceutical insert. Vow to drink tons of water, eat lots of fresh fruits & veggies, take probiotics, no junk food or alcohol. First day, mild headache, mild heart palpations, tiredness. Second day worse headache, heart palpations, tiredness. Third day terrible headache, exhausted, little energy. I hang in there because I have no other antibiotic options (many allergies.) Fourth day very tired, bad headache, depressed, tearful. Sixth day more of the same. Begin to wonder if this drug will kill me. Drink even more water. Seventh day, I look at the pill in the morning. Will it kill me? Should I stop? Call the doc? I soooo want to get rid of this horrible infection that has been plaguing me for years. I decide I'd rather die than stay sick. I take the pill. Day is horrible: throbbing headache, extreme tiredness, heart palpations, confusion, depression, tearful. I go ahead and take the evening dose, wondering if I was going to die in my sleep. THE EIGHTH DAY I wake up in the morning feeling pretty good! Slept through the night. Not really tired, mood is good! All day today my energy got stronger and stronger. Headache very minimal. I feel good! Maybe I was experiencing my body as a battleground between the virus and the drug. And I think the drug is winning! Feeling good, better than in many months. Have three more doses and I'm done. SURE AM GLAD I HUNG IN THERE! It aint easy, but it seems to work. Can't stress enough: eat very carefully, drink enough water to drown an elephant, don't eat junk food, don't drink or drug. This drug is really hard on the body, and to survive it you need to help your body by feeding carefully and hydrating more than you ever have---and take probiotics!

I took Bactrim for eight days (for a dermatological issue) before I realized I was allergic to the drug. No know allergies before, and the first symptoms presented were tiredness and low grade temperature with aching, on the fourth day of taking Bactrim. Which I then believed, I had a virus, so I continued taking the antibiotic. When I developed 102.2 while on Tylenol and ibuprofen for the temperature, I made an md appointment. That day, day seven of Bactrim, I developed a full body bright red rash. It took me two weeks to recuperate and return to normal. I am a 57 year old registered nurse.

How long before your side effects went away? Just curious because I also took one dose and am having almost every severe side effect and its been 48 hours.

I was prescribed Bactrim for an ear/sinus infection. I took it 7 out of the 10 days. Had to stop taking it because I felt like my head was going to explode. I went and bought Keifer drink for probiotics. Today I am feeling a little better. Had to call in sick because I was too dizzy to work. This drug is not safe and I really hope I can get passed this. I just want to feel normal again. One thing I'm grateful for is that it was me and not my kids on this drug. I will never take this medicine ever again and hope that they do take it off the market. My pulse got so low on the drug they hospitalized me for two days thinking it was my heart. Never did they think it was a side effect from Bactrim. I felt hopeless and thought I was gonna die. I hope to return to normal. Never again!!! Believe me.... I will protect my kids from taking this drug.

I took the last of my 10 day (twice a day) prescription of Bactrim for an infection last night. Today my body is covered in a rash. Got on the internet to see what if this could be related to the antibiotic and found tons of people having mild to severe reactions to this. Mine is apparently mild but now I can never take it again, as the reactions can get worse. I went to the pharmacy and showed him the rash. He recommended Benedryl. Some people have immediate reactions others like me have delayed reactions, no clue why. If you have any reaction that makes you feel ill, call your doctor right away. Glad to find lots of information so I didn't freak out, but from what I have come across, a lot of people have reactions to this, when previously never having any allergic reactions.

glad i came across your post. i was on bactrim for a second go around. first time i got itchy (not badly) and chalked it up to laundry detergent. second go around, i made it to day 4 (for UTI) and broke out everywhere; firs the arms and wrists, then the abdomen, then that faded, then the legs and feet. a misery. i went to urgent care but the doc asked if i could tough it out since i am an insulin diabetic. i tried for the day but ended up going back before they closed, only face and arms on fire now. he gave me decadron(?) injection and sent me home with 6 pills, 2 a day, 20mg each. i've been living on 25mg of bendryl every 4 hrs for two days now and the itchiness leaves but eventually comes back, worse at nighttime.
though i hated hearing it could last for a bit longer, your post helped me out. no respiratory troubles but at least i know how long the reaction can last!

i took bactrim when i wqas pregnant during my hospitilization for a kidney infection.i gave birth to my daughter months later.she is now ten months old and her left eyes optic nerve never developed fully.it is 1/6th of the size i should be.she i basically blind in her eye.i took her to the eye doctor he said he had two other infant cases that were the same.all three of us mothers took bactrim while pregnant!my daughters eye wanders all the time,she is basically blind in her left eye.what should i do can i take it to court?and sue?they said it was safe to use...?any one know what i should do?or where to go with this?this is so devastating...
