I need to know of any side effects that may occur while taking this medication.

I was prescribed bactrium ds in February for a spider bite. Three days later I was in the er with pneumonia. I even asked how I could get pneumonia while on antibiotics. He stated that bactrium was better for skin issues while I would need another antibiotic for the pneumonia. So I switched. I got well but the cough lingered awhile. No one ever mentioned an adverse reaction. So last week I started bactrium again and was sick within three hours. I knew immediately this was not a coincidence. Off to the er again. Xray normal and ekg normal. I obvously stopped the bactrium and am a lot better today. My eyes are still red and itchy. I also still cough some. But I cannot believe the first er doc did not mention that all my symptoms (feeling like I had been beat by a baseball bat, cough, headache, tight chest, fatigue) were classic adverse reactions.

Beware of the bactrim. First few days had headaches, loss of appetite and insomnia... Then 8th day broke out in hives. Scary , never had allergies in my life.

Bactrim is the worst!!! I have never been so itchy in my entire life. I cannot believe that I was prescribed something that is illegal in the UK, I wish the States were as proactive about keeping people safe. I am so swollen I feel like a water balloon and can't sleep through the night because I was up itchy. I hope no one indulges in this drug.

MMeeee TOO. I started with a Bactrim reaction on the 5th day of taking it. First came the bloating, joint all over pain, constipation, nausea.. then the next day rash and welts and itching so bad that benedryl, even the maximum dosage allowed will not touch it. Doc gave me a 'cript for an anti itch pill. It does help but not an awful lot. I try to keep busy to keep my mind off of the itch but that lasts about 20 minutes and then back to rubbing. I can't scratch or I'd have my sking scratched off by now..and I'm 3 days into it. One of the best things to stop or soothe the itch for maybe an hour at a time is rubbing alchol. If you have no open scratched areas the alochol will not burn but does give some relief as it evaporates off of you. A wet towel to keep wiping your itchy places helps too. Good luck.. ! I do not think that the our government needs to water board anyone to get info out of them.. just give them a sulfa drug and once they start the itch they'll talk.

My husband has been taking this nasty pill for 4 days and has developed a fever a severe headache and stiffness in his neck. He is miserable and hurts all over, No more of these pills for him!!!!!!!!

I thought I was the only one! I'm on day 4 of a 5 day regiment. I've been having fever, chills, shortness of breath, dizziness, inability to concentrate, depression and loss of appetite, oh not to mention the horrible nausea. I've had to leave work early everyday because of how sick I've been. I've taken other antibiotics in the past and have never had symptoms like this so I started to think that I was having other serious health problems. I'm so glad that I'm reading this!

I just went thru the exact same thing. Just got off it today. Head hurts so bad when I cough feels like my head is going to exploded. Plus I had a respiratory infection same time. And was given a tetnus shot with the whooping cough vaccine at the same time as I had been bit by a dog. Had reaction to that too. I also had horrible stomach pain as I have a hernia and was constipated for 5 days even after taking 3 laxatives. Its sad when you ho to the doctor anymore and within 24hrs you are worse and think you are dying. Ugh thanks to everybody who posts on here. It helps people like me to know its not just me and helps you get answers.

I experience the same symptoms after taking bactrium for a minor staph infection fever, chills, pounding headache, rash that was like a sunburn, so weak I could barely get out of bed for two days, vomiting and itchy all over. I told the doctor of these symptoms on the 5th day of taking and I went back for a post check to make sure my infection was healing and she put me back on the same antibiotic telling me if it was an allergic reaction I would know immediately this time around!!! wow I thought I was going to die!!

Has anyone had tingling hands and arms from taking Bactrim? I took one pill and within 3 hours I had arms and hands tingling and over all rush of feeling really bad I stopped after the 1st dose and I am wondering a little over 24 hours and I am still tingling

Yes, I believe Bactrim causes the tingling you speak of. I have Diabetic Neuropathy (tingling and numbness in my feet and hands) and was prescribed Bactrim for a prostate infection. My neuropathy was actually improving to the point it was not bothersome. I tried to tell my doctor that I can't tolerate quinalones (CIPRO) or sulpha drugs (Bactrim), but he refused to change my prescription to Doxycycline which I have taken many times over the years with success. He told me if I did not take the Bactrim, he would put me on Cipro. In a few days, my Neuropathy was so severe I could barely walk. My feet and hands hurt and had stabbing pains, my skin burned, I itched everywhere, my joints hurt and I felt really terrible. I also could not sleep and my mental moods were up and down. I felt like my mind was all foggy. I took Bactrim for 15 days. I was suppose to take it for 21 days....but I could not handle it anymore so I quit. I stopped the Bactrim about 5 days ago and still feel bad with all the bad symptoms. I am hoping the after effects will get better. I will never take Bactrim again and I am looking for a new doctor! Bactrim is dangerous. There are other antibiotics that are effective besides Bactrim! Like some of you, I will contact the FDA.

It sounds to me that a lot of people posting here have allergies not suitable for this med. I was prescribed Bactrim for a UTI and it is working wonderfully. I will say this tho. It was my own mistake, but DO NOT consume alcohol at ANY point while taking these meds. Wait two to three days after your prescription is empty. The side effects are horrible. Cold sweats, constant headache, aches in every muscle, constant thirst, naseau, disorientation. Your's may vary. That happened on Friday and it it has gotten better but not fully subsided, it is Monday now. Just remember it's always important to ask your doctor about any new meds an be honest about allergies and habits you have.

It's been over a month since I had my reaction, I'm slowly getting better but my face still flares up now and then. Gets red and one side swells up. My arms that got the worst of it are still discolored and sensitive. I now can't go out without putting on SOX 50 or stronger sunblock and my tolerance for heat or cold had definitely lowered. This sucks. The doctor says it will take three to six months for this to stop. If anyone taking this had any doubt about this drug talk to your doctor and have them prescribe something else if possible. This wasn't the only option they had for my infection they just choose this drug for what every reason. If I had known the risks of a bad reaction like this were more than they let on or that it could be worse after you have been on it for ten days I would have asked for another drug.

I hope you have gotten help by now. Just saw this. I recently was tx with Bactrim for MRSA. Never taken before. I am a nurse. Never connected my symptoms to the Bactrim. High fever, chills, nausea and vomiting. Decrease appetite, severe headache, lethargy, and stiff neck. Then the rash came.
Turns out I had viral meningitis due to the Bactrim. It sounds like your symptoms were very similar. If anyone starts to get severe headache, stiff neck, fevers after taking Bactrim... Go to ED immediately!!!!! This is a dangerous drug ??

I was put on this drug for a duration of 10 days, 2 times a day for a UTI. The first three days I had the most debilitating headache I've ever experienced; I didn't connect this with a side effect, I only assumed it was due to cutting out the caffeine for the sake of my bladder. However, on the 9th day, I woke up with my lips swollen to gigantic proportions. On the 10th day, I woke up with the most itchy rash that looks like hives from my neck to my ankles. Hoping this Benadryl takes care of it.

Omg. Thank you everyone for sharing. I too am a bacterium poison victim.. I'm up at 4am posting this as I awakened itching from hives. I took my last dose around 10:30 pm last night, and this is my first reaction. I just took Benadryl. I really am trying to avoid a trip to er at 4am Sunday.

I'll try to frequently update my symptoms. Hopefully they don't last long and these messages help the next victim. The benadryl I took at 4am helped. Woke up w/o hives. However some spots are still coming and going. Odd. I feel like I'm getting sick. A little groggy.

Hi again. To recap : I was on Bactrim and keflex. After final dose of Bactrim 7 days I broke out into hives at 4Am sunday, took Benadryl was ok. All of sunday continued keflex still had some spots recurring. By evening large hive patches. Went to er and they gave me 60mg prednisone. Monday morning woke up ok. However spots progressively returned so now I stopped keflex. Continuing Benadryl and prednisone. Today, monday, as hives returned more and more. Have patches everywhere. Arms legs back stomach buttocks face neck. Dr put me on clindamycin antibiotics now. Wish me luck.

I was given Bactrim for HS. 2x800 per day. I was fine for 2 weeks and on the 15th day developed a headache. Kept taking Neorofen and thought it was odd. 5 days later the headache was persistent and I was getting g so. E fairly severe chills. I don't often get sick so didn't even realise that meant I had a fever and just kept going.

Eventually worked out it was a side effect.

Waited two months was told to start the course again... Within 4 hrs I was back to fever, headache, lethargy, dizziness sore.. Restless...

I had a similar reaction 2x with severe hives and itchy burning skin. I felt like I was on fire! I had hives for close to 4 days all over my body except my face. The spots remained for about 2 weeks. The first time, I did not think the medication caused it. The second time, without a doubt and it scared me. Benadryl alleviated my symptoms and other antibiotics that were prescribed.

A month later, I feel that bactrim is still in my system. I get itchy, my eyes get irritated, and my throat tight or sore. I am going to the doctor in a couple weeks to see what exactly is causing this. My fear is Stevens Johnson syndrome as this young lady is suffering from.

Stay away from bactrim!
