I need to know of any side effects that may occur while taking this medication.

Jonathan, it was in August that I took the drug and ended up in the ER room on the 10th day after starting the drug. Severe rash over my whole body, intense itching and burning. My skin on my forearms are still blotchy. I received a steroid shot and a prescription and the rash was pretty much gone in 2 weeks. I hope you scrolled down and read all our comments. We have all suffered from this drug. I

Hi Ginger, thank you for the kind words. I talked to my pharmacist last night and he said insomnia is a very unusual side effect of Bactrim, or to be specific Sulfahexazole, but if it was the Bactrim that caused it, then it will go away at some point. How long has it been since you stopped taking the drug? My friend had a serious allergic reaction to the drug in 2008 and it basically ruined his life for a couple of years. He had the rash and everything, and he's trying to help me through this. I wish you a return to your normal health!

Jonathan, sure hope you get over your symptoms quickly. I took the Bactrim for 8 days before I had any symptoms and now I am still suffering things but don't know for sure if it's from the drug or not.NVENZ

I wish I had known all this before I started taking Bactrim! My doctor perscribed it for a UTI and after only 4 days of it I started finding it impossible to sleep. Damnit, I took it for one more full day before I realized it was responsible. I stopped the drug immediately and notified my doctor. He said I def must have had some reaction, and was genuinely sorry to tell me that it can take 14-20 days for the drug to leave my system! Even though I had only taken 10 tablets. It's day 8 now of my misery, I take Unisom at night which might force a couple hours of sleep, and now I have diarrahea as well.

You were NOT crazy. If that were true . . . we all are crazy on this post. Are you all better now . . . it's going to be three months on the 26th for me and my tongue.

Yep I'm going to do that...drug section with the FDA. I've now found because of this BACTRIM, . and my tongue I can't eat Jalepenos, etc and I've loved hot Mexican food. We spent 16 years vacationing for a week in Rosarito, Baja. I'm now thinking that some effects can be permanent 'cause I didn't eat any hot foods for 2 1/2 months, then did . . then a flare up. Thank you so much for your replys. I think we need to all share and communicate for protect our health. The hospitals and doctors dont seem to pursue it as we are trying. as for the SYMPTOMS...
I will share the ones that I know. But the info is available on the web. You can go to the FDA or the CDC and get lots of info.
Hives, whelps and circles
Itching
burning
blisters
body pain
aches
muscle spasms
joint pain
insomnia
diarea and constipation
choking
throat swelling
i had body swelling in my hands and other places
bruising in various random places
tingling, restlesness
blood test results not normal
high kidney pannel, Creatinine
low kidney function, Clearance
There are more and other symptoms such as syndromes that I have not listed.. The FDA has a more complete listing. Everyone that has a reaction should notify the drug SECTION of the FDA and explain exact details of the drug usage and results/symptoms. They will have a record of this. Then notify all pharmicies that you use of your allergy. BACTRIM contains 2 different drugs. It is not just one. So, either or both can be causing the problem.

Jackie, anyone can join in this discussion and I hope more people will discover this website and tell about their experience, if any, with this drug. My daughter-in-law has taken it and hasn't ever had a problem with it. I guess we are the "lucky" ones who had the bad side effects. I am still having some issues but I can't really prove it is from taking Bactrim. But I think it is. Sure hope you and Sugar are getting better.

Jackie thank goodness you are getting some better. Very smart with the letter! Today my tongue is some better, chewed alot of ice yesterday. I didn't have those awful side effects like you and Ginger so guess I'm lucky. Remember you can have flare ups; you'll be surprised by them; let's just hope they don't happen.

Thank you so much! Im new to this and was not sure who was talking to who...I thought you and Ginger were talking lol. Yesterday was the worst. I hurt so bad I started the day with 4 ibuprofen and neurotin. had a loritab at 1230, 345, 645, and at bed. I expected to be admitted. I received a letter from the FDA based on exact bloodwork results and symptoms of my experience. They instructed me to get immediate medical attention! It is now on record with them. I copied the letter and took it with me on my way out. I did not return to the ER because they did not help me the first time. This morning, I woke up at about a pain level of 4 rather than 7 and 8. So, Thank God I must be improving. !!!! I will keep you posted and please continue to share with me your experience. I subscribed to this as an email as well. Once again, Thank you girls! I have been very very sick. Thought I was in organ failure!

I wrote yesterday - did you get a message from Sugar? Don't know why it wasn't passed on to you? Just read below... it is awful DO NOT TAKR AND DRUGS WITH SULFA IN THEM ANF BACTRIM IS LOADED WITH IT. READ GINGER'S STATEMENT. God Bless!

Sugar, I agree. The doctors in the ER said it could kill me if I take sulfa again.

DO NOT take any Sulfa drugs!!!! Just look at the comments!! This is such a horrible drug. My tongue is still swollen from Sept 29, 2012....violent diaherra. HJ

Sugar, sure hope the tongue problem goes away soon. It must be sensitive and swells with the spicy food.
Jackie...I feel your pain. When I went to the ER with my bad rash, I burned like fire too..felt like a bad sunburn. Plus it itched like crazy. It took a little over a week for the sunburn rash to mostly go away, however I still have splotchy forearms and to me it looks almost like it did with the rash. I think the steroid shot I was given in the ER really helped, but it still takes time to get out of your system. UOTWJ

Hi! I still have problems with my swollen tongue. It has been this way since September 26, 12. It got better a week or so ago, today it's swollen again probably because we has mexican beef tacos for dinner last night. Having burritos tonight, just gonnea suck on alot of popsicles. I'm sure the itching and burning will ease in a month or so, but you have have flareup like me. Sending my best....

I am trying to recover from a severe reaction to Bactrim. I had burning from head to toe like fire. All over body pain. tingling. chest pain and abdominal spasms radiating through my back. I was screaming with these pains at the ER. I have bruising too. My Creatinine level was up slightly and my kidney function was just out of normal level. My blood work came back fine except for my kidney pannel. I have been off of it today being 3 days. I am still in bad body pain with tingling and itching. I dont know how long this is going to last. The pharmasist told me last night that it will b out of my system in 5 days. but I am beginning to think that is not going to happen. I would love to hear more from others who had symptoms like mine and how long they lasted. Thank you

That sounds awful!!! I'm still going through effects, mine is a lovely swollen tongue for 6 weeks, slight rash on my face. Guess folks who have it, or had it or still having effects, read these messages. Stay well.

Bactrim DS was the worst thing I've EVER had to go through! Upon finishing, I developed a bad cough. I then became so weak I couldn't lift my limbs and slept 18 hours a day. I developed a terrible headache, nausea,fever, chills. The chills lasted about a week, everything else lasted almost 4 weeks! I thought I was going to die. The hospital acted as if I were a crazy person, because " nobody has ever had this kind of problem and its a highly used medication" BULL! My bloodwork indicated poor kidney function (which tested fine weeks later)I'm only posting in case this is happening to somebody else..because I thought I was never going to feel better and I did.

Sugar, had to laugh at your cake comment.
I hope we don't suffer much longer from this drug. My arms are still blotchy (I think). No, you aren't alone. I wonder how many people have reactions and don't report it? I reported this drug to Medwatch and got a reply from them. They keep track of any problems with drugs.
