Sandoz Triamterene 37.5 Mg / Hctz 25mg Tabs (Top voted first)
UpdatedIs hydrochlorothiazide 25mg / triamterene 37.5mg tabs by Sandoz, greenish blue?
I used to take green rounded tabs triamterene/ hctz 37.5/25 by Sandoz and they worked pretty good. Just recently on the refill they filled it with green peanut shape pills from the same mfr but I noticed that they are not working as good as the other. My BP went up. Also, I was not able to find that kind of shaped pills on drug identifier Any ideas? Thank you.
They light green color, round shape with GG165 imprint, these are working well. Also, there are some other shapes of pills available, but I am using round.
The new one from Sandoz green peanut with SZ431 imprint are not working at all, also I was not able to find them on drug identifier, this is why it raised my concern If Sandoz will stop making GG165 I will be in trouble...
Drug manufacturers can change the color or shape of any pill over a period of time without prior notice, so this is definitely something that you cannot asses unless you have the pill in your possession. Alternatively, if you can provide me the imprints and shape of the pill, I can look it up for you in a drug database and get back to you with any of these details.
Mine changed also. Given the recent disclosure that some generics failed to properly dissolve, I'm thinking maybe Sandoz is trying to get ahead of the curve by moving from a capsule to a pill. What a lot of folks don't realize is generics may have the same basic ingredients as the brand name, but the fillers and other non-medical ingredients vary considerably. Sooner or later our insurance companies are going to figure out that they're not saving any money by forcing use of generics which don't do the job or have unintended side effects.

I called 4 pharmacies in my area asking if they still carried the old, round, green pill, and none of them did. Then I contacted Sandoz, the manufacturer, and was told they have discontinued the Green, round pill (GG 165) and have replaced it with the Bowtie/Peanut shape (SZ 431). They took a report on my reactions but there is really nothing more they can do. They advised that I contact my doctor, tell her about my reaction, and ask that she prescribe a different pill. If the new pill is covered by my insurance is anyone's guess, but the rep at Sandoz did tell me the only difference between the 2 pills was Yellow dye #10 as an added ingredient. I know from my reactions to the new pill that it must be more than that.

Sandoz has been given a citation from the FDA because the blenders they use do NOT mix sufficiently. They have found uneven amounts of medicine in their batches.
My triamterene blood pressure pills change its a shape from round to peanut shape. How can I be sure they didn't give me the wrong pills! ???
Same thing here. Not helping at all on fluid retention. Never had this problem with the round ones or actually any other shape or color. I had to wait several days for the pharmacy to get these in before they could fill the prescription, once they got them in they told me they looked different but are the same. I had trouble at first finding any information about them from the markings on the pills but later checked online and it showed correct name, same manufacturer. This is the first time that i've had any issue with this not being effective, and in a big way, so that's my reason to see if anyone else has had or having issues of ineffectiveness.
ABSOLUTELY THE SAME IS HAPPENING TO ME!
THE BLOATING IN MY STOMACH IS PAINFUL AND MY BLOOD PRESSURE KEEPS SPIKING!
NN , I have read your problem with Sandoz green peanuts shape tablets. What you can do is to report it to the company (Sandoz) and FDA. I did it myself. Hopefully they will figure out what in the pill formulation is preventing the main ingredient to do a proper job and help to lower BO. Otherwise, we just need to look for different manufacturers of this medication.
I agree with the folks above, have taken Sandoz generic round blue GG 165 for years for HBP, my pharmacy changed to the mint green peanut shape SZ 431 for my new refill. Have been on it for 12 days now and my blood pressure is up and I am retaining fluid. I plan to notify Sandoz for this adverse reaction (Google them) for their 800 # or email address (by the country you are in) and also to make an appoint with my MD and notify my HMO pharmacy.
Same here with switch to peanut shaped Sandoz generic. More swollen, BP is elevated, and tinnitus is much worse. Why do manufacturers ruin a good product?
I am so happy to read these posts!! I have been on the green peanuts for a few months and coincidentally noticed that I have been gaining weight but did not connect the two. Then this weekend I was out of town and took one of the "old" round pills that was in my travel bag. To put it bluntly, I was running to the potty all day!!! That is what made me get on the internet to find out what is going on. The green peanuts are NOT working for me either! I have tried the Mylanbrand capsules and they give me a headache. I will contact Sandoz and let them know that the peanuts are not working and that I want my round pill back! Thanks everyone for clearing this up for me!

Since I wrote the other post two days ago, I sent emails to both Sandoz and to FDA Adverse Effects and both have responded, wanting more details. I intend to send information to both saying that the new peanut shaped pill does not work as well as the old one for controlling BP nor as a diuretic. This is the link for the FDA form:

My pharmacy just switched from Triamterene/hctz by Sandoz to Apotex. I think I am having a reaction to the new med. It is all the same strength, etc... Is it possible that the formulas are somewhat different?
Re: Pam (# 24)
I feel bad for all of us who depend on all these medications. Generic medication differ from the original brand. The main ingredients are the same, but the fillers are depend on what chemicals manufacturers are using and here comes the trouble. All of them are trying to reduce theis cost, and it all comes at the price of our well being...
For now I am praying that Mylan will not change the formulation of triamterene/hctz for awhile...
Re: NN (# 11)
I am having the same problem with Sandoz Triamterene 75/50 in that they do NOT work at all. I have taken Triamterene for years and I have not had any problems. CVS started filling rx with Sandoz and they don't work. My adult daughter takes same dose of Triamterene and when she was given a refill at another CVS hers did NOT work. The manufacturer in both cases are Sandoz. I am miserable.
I switched to a different diuretic a few months back, but I first checked what my insurance would cover for a reasonable price (only about 4 different ones) then checked reviews for each of those - then decided on Amiloride 5mg/Hgtz 50mg (MFG Mylan). It does not work as well as the old Triamterene GG165 (round green pill) as far the amount of urine I pass, but I'm not bloated and my BP is staying normal. If they ever start making the Triamterene GG165 again, I would switch back right away!
My mother has been on Triamterene/HCTZ 37.5/25 capsules for many years. The drug is manufactured by Sandoz. When she refilled the drug this weekend, she received tablets, not the capsules she had been getting. She is 86 years old, and concerned about possible side effects of changing the medication form. Are the capsules still available?
I have generic Maxide 37.5/25 tablets made by Sandoz. They are light green. Markings: GG on top of pill and 165 on bottom of pill. 2 small score lines only near edges. No markings on other side of pill.
