Ranexa & Kidney Failure

I'm diabetic, have hypertension, CHF, & early renal failure. Doctor subjected me to arteriogram yesterday for spells of short of breath & angina, but balked at doing ANYTHING (no angioplasty, stents-nothing, for 7 vessels blocked at least 90% because my kidneys were having
issues according to labwork. But he gave my husband samples & scrip for Ranexa, said start taking it & in 2 weeks I'll feel better. I'm reading the patient booklet and the prescriber info and ALL over both is listed kidney failure & renal failure. If kidney failure & avoiding dyalisis was the reason we did nothing to FIX my problem,
why give me a drug that CAUSES kidney failure? How many people got kidney failure from taking Ranexa? Thanks!

Hello, Lisa! How are you?

It isn't that this medication causes kidney failure, it is that the potential risk is there, it might cause it, in some people that take it, but it is very rare.

The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, hearing loss, weight gain, and blurred vision.

Not everyone experiences all the possible side effects of any given medication, you may not experience any of them. When prescribing anything, your doctor has to carefully evaluate the possible benefits against the possible risks, before making their decision.

Have you started taking it, yet?
