Psychiatrist Who Will Continue Me On My Xanax
(Newest replies first)
Updated
I just moved to Colorado Springs a few months ago. I am trying to find a psychiatrist who will help with my bipolar,OCD, and anxiety. I have been to one already but they won't continue me on my xanax prescriptions. I've been on xanax for 6 years. I want to be helped with other medications but also keep my xanax. If there is a psychiatrist who could help me find solutions to all my problems that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I hope y’all figured that out. It’s what I am dealing with now. It’s scary.
Same issue. Had to go to ER last night from dialysis due to a panic attack. One like I have not had since I was younger. I have been on for 30 years and this year a nurse practitioner at Achieve Whole Recovery decided to ween me off said 30 year prescription even though I have a heart condition (from 18, when the docs put me on the Xanax) and I have now been on dialysis for 13 years. So my question is is that even safe for MY body at this point to try to take me off fast (she is not doing a slow ween like she seems to think she is). I have been told multiple times by other docs this can make my system all messed up and I can even have seizures coming off of Xanax since I have been on it for SOOOO long. It’s always the same script. I’m always compliant of the refills, never abuse them or take more than I should. I take less if I’m not feeling anxious. But technically all of is get addicted to it if we have been on it long term and it’s quite u fair to make us all have to switch cause docs didn’t think it over in the first place about addiction issues? And my long term doctor I was with for 20 some odd years (David Caster) always told me time and time I should be meant to feel better over a medication that just so happens to work for me. And people should NOT. Especially if they are not abusing it. So many other drug classes have just as many issues. I do not want to be on any NEW meds not to mentioned due to all my other health issues a lot I can’t even take due to my kidneys. So what is a person to do? I have lived successfully on dialysis with a heart condition for 13 years. I would like to just leave me meds as they are so I can hopefully live for 13 more. The stress alone of thinking about switch meds is not fair to MY time left in life. Severe Panic Disorders and Agoraphobia are NOT fun to deal with.

I’m having the same problem if you guys found someone will you please share with me I’m terrified
My wife has been on xanax for almost 20 years. We cannot find one who will continue to give it to her OR help her tapper off. Whether it be because she has been on it for so long, her milligrams, or because of MEDICAID. No doctor, hospital, no one so far that we can find and she only has approx 15 days worth of her meds left.
They have legalized it in Colorado, No 'Script'' or 'Doctor' is needed. With that said Cannabis is no substitute for Xanax?
If you are living in Colorado, you should go to a dr and get a script for Medical Marijuanna, the Dispensary can direct you to the correct medication, they also have edibles if you don't want to smoke. I was on xanax for years. It is for short term use only. Give it up!, go natural.
Well Anna, the nearest one in my State is a 240 mile round trip, although there is a county Psychiatrist based in my town. I can't go there building because I pay for my medical insurance and most people here get it all free, now enhanced with full medical at no charge. It pays to be poor I guess. I would just look for an M.D. if they are able to help!
That's the thing I have no idea where else to go. I guess I could just go to multiple different psychiatrists but that's a lot of work.
Hello Anna,
I sympathize completely with your plight. I have all types of medical conditions and found out recently that the good old DEA is responsible for a lot of Doctors not being able to perform to the NEEDS of the patient as much as they have to "CONFORM" to the threats and intimidation from the DEA. They had told my "old" doctor he was not able to write no more than a certain amount of pain meds and if went over so many MGs then his license was in jeopardy. To me this is appalling for one thing the DEA has not got "NOWHERE" near the intelligence or the education that my doctors have when it comes to what I need to control my medical issues, Who do these DEA people think they are besides, God??? What I hope for is perhaps one day a few of these agents get in the crippling pain that I am in and then lets see how they can handle their own "mandatory minimums" and be in pain. I am sorry you are getting treated the way you are regarding your xanax. If you have been taking them for that long "YOU" should no best what your body responds to and not to upset you but you are not supposed to just come off of drugs like xanax cold turkey. If you strait feeling weird and not sleeping and just very different please get to a hospital. this Dr. that did not continue your meds could be causing you to possibly have a seizure without tapering off gradually. This to me sounds like the doctor you went to was an idiot. I bet he wasn't that stupid when he went to charge you for his worthless appointment was he? Sounds like he has a GOD complex of his own.
Tell her in your non professional opinion she is clearly wrong. Can you go somewhere else?
Just to wean off and take mood stabilizers. The psychiatrist says she won't continue me on it because it's proven that it doesn't actually help anxiety at all.
There must be a lot of providers. My area doesn't have one, and the closest California Psychiatrist is 120 miles away. Perhaps you can try a regular Doctor for your med needs? Unless Colorado has the tight new medicine laws in force this might be easier until you can find a specialist?
Hello, Anna! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having.
Unfortunately, there is no listing of doctors according to what they will or will not prescribe that I can refer to for you.
And when you see a new doctor, a lot of it depends on your attitude. Since this a controlled substance that can be habit forming and is frequently abused, if you go to a new doctor and demand it, they're going to view that as being drug seeking behavior and aren't going to be willing to prescribe it. You really just need to let your medical records speak for themselves.
Doctors have no choice but to be extra cautious, so really the only thing you can do is play the game. There just aren't any doctors out there that will just throw these types of prescriptions at you anymore and not worry about it.
What alternatives did they offer you?
