Prozac Tweens Side Effects

Any info on side effects for a younger person (age 12) who was just prescribed Prozac for depression, after a depression diagnosis and attempted suicide?

While the side effects would be the same at that age, as they would be for an adult taking it, they may be slightly more intense.

The FDA lists them as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, vivid dreaming, weight loss and dry mouth.

I am on it for perimenopause symptoms and I've found that generally, the side effects intensify for a few days around week 3, then suddenly improve and go away, after that.

How is the child doing on it?

Has been a week today and so far no symptoms other than lesser appetite after taking meds in the am. Seems to help with anxiety yet still seeing a bit of anger pop up, as a very private child and doesn't like being questioned (we are all in counseling-thank God for insurance). I understand it can take 30 days to fully "assimilate" in the body/brain. Very positive with the results thus far. Thanks so much for your reply.

We are now close to the month point and there have been several bouts of stomach pain, some ocd like behavior but as a whole she thinks it is making her "happier" and less anxious about life in general. Trade-offs. The first few weeks it made her very tired but now that has wore off and that was unexpected as we switched to PM and was helping her sleep.

Now after 45 days on Prozac 20 mg still seeing more OCD behaviors that were not there before med and lots of stomach pain and terrible bouts of acne! Help. We see the Psychiatrist next week and want to change or decrease dosage...does anyone have any input on what to try next or how it went when they decreased dosage. Thank you!

I was taking the generic of Prozac 10mg because I was having the sleepy side effect and moodiness too, on the stronger ones. It still wasn't better so I cut them in half and split dosed them. They were making me short tempered and sometimes just plain mean. Has anyone else had this happen? I finally weird myself off them an now I'm off everything except my anxiety med at bedtime. I've been on them since 1986. I have PTSD after abuse and witnessed my late husband shoot himself on the front porch, in front of my son and myself.

I also have been diagnosed with anxiety-depression, hyperactive as a child, and some mild bi-polar, also some OCD at times. I have survived many tramas and have lived to tell about it. The worst was being crushed on my left side from the knee down. I ran out of gas on a 5 lane busy street, went to the trunk to get a can. I put in key then I was hit by a Blazer SUV from behind by an elderly couple in there 80's. My left leg looked like a big turkey leg after Thanksgiving. Since then many surgeries, many trips to hospitals and other complications, I'm still here! Thank God. If I can survive all that in the last 12 years, u guys can. Good luck with your med troubles.

I agree with you on the side effect of anger and "meanness" off the 10mg but my child was put on 20mg and after month 2 has had 3 incidence of cutting-as mad inside as well as outside every few days (usually out of the blue) and cant explain how or why-as in a fog. I WANT her OFF this drug now but see a new and more concerned Psychiatrist in just a few days and they ignorantly put her on capsules i could not start cutting meds down. For a tween more cons than pros.
