Prolia Side Effects (Page 26) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI would like to know of any side effects others may have experienced after receiving Prolia infusions. Up to now I have none.
Re: Marion (# 2704)
I could bet it was the Prolia injection that caused your thyroid disorder... It happened to me at 61.... I never had any thyroid problem before. Prolia causes autoimmune disorders because in trying to recycle the "bad" bone back onto our healthy bones (even if our bones are less dense than we would like) it "plays" with the T cells in the immune system in order to let them bypass the natural processes....and allow the recycling of this disposable bone back onto our bones.... No wonder spontaneous fractures occur after several injections....Because the bad bone eventually breaks, no matter how dense it may seem to be when they do a densitometry.... Spontaneous femur fractures happen because of Prolia....and the femur is a bone that usually breaks in a very serious type of situation....such as a car accident....
Re: Marion (# 2704)
So many of us have the same symptoms. Lasting damages to our bodies. I am angry.
Re: Judy (# 2709)
It is really discouraging that no one in the medical profession will listen to the people who have had these experiences... our numbers are growing and there are many more people who experience the negative consequences of this drug but do not have a vehicle to voice their misery. Our doctors must think we are either hypochondriacs (sp?) or dismiss our problems as coincidence in that they occur after a Prolia injection. This website is a strong voice within our small community. I have to believe that eventually this voice will be heard in a larger setting and awareness will expand.
Re: Lizzie123 (# 2716)
I am so sorry that this happened to you. Just know that Parathyroid problems are definitely related to Prolia. How are your calcium levels? Within 3 months of Prolia, I had both Hypocalcemia and Hyperparathyroidism. Hypocalcemia can be dangerous, so be sure it has been checked.
Be well.

That is so awful! At least with the hair loss there are wigs and hope it will grow back. Teeth do not grow back and trying to fix them is cost prohibitive. Perhaps AMGEN execs would volunteer to have some teeth removed and shave their heads to determine the ultimate cost of their medication. Self esteem has no price tag..it is not vanity.. you can tell yourself its OK I am the same person, but if your mirror contradicts that statement on a daily basis, it is a struggle to maintain your inner confidence.
Re: Sal (# 2708)
Prolia has caused my jaw to break. It has been a difficult year. This is not how I planned to start my retirement.
Re: Sal (# 2731)
Sal, is this another osteoporosis drug? I pity those who get talked into taking it. We all had to learn the hard way!
Re: Judy (# 2733)
I am still waiting to join a class action against amgen.Keep me posted
Re: Judy (# 2733)
Yes, it is a new drug. !
This is Osteoporosis Awareness month ( organized by Big Pharma ) with informational advertising designed to scare people into taking these poisonous drugs. They have no conscious, it is all about profits over people.
Check out the website Save Our Bones. It is informative about dietary ways to save our bones, plus the latest studies; and, the latest information about Big Pharma.
Re: Faith (# 15)
I had my injection on March 7, 2019 and have been ill ever since. I broke out in welts that did and did not look like welts all over my limbs and back and buttocks. My face and ears was the worst hit with what is called angioedema. I had a horrible adverse reaction and have been in and out of emerg and urgent care many times. I have taken prednisone to help me through the acute phase but every week I have something new that happened. I do have osteoporosis and considered moderate in nature and would never have taken this killer drug or any of them if I had known. I am so angry that I cannot explain but mostly at myself that I did not do my homework and trusted my specialist. I will be seeing a lawyer as now have done a lot of reading and there are no guarantees that there will not be lasting side effects. I have the stomach issue, pain in my legs and so much more. If you decide to use this crap then do your homework first and do not trust what you are told by the doctor. Oh yes I am an ex- nurse and live in Canada.
Re: Dawn (# 2737)
So sorry this happened to you. I too have side effects that seem to be "lasting" and like you , I was put on Prolia without real need. But I had FOUR Injections because I too did not do my homework. I had no clue that with each injection, the effects were building and building. It was not till after the fourth that I became positive my mouth condition and the strange swirling inside my body were related to Prolia, so I simply went off it. I did not return to my oncologist (I am cancer free but was being monitored) The reason they gave me prolia in the first place was to "protect my bones" while i was taking estrogen blocker. I took myself off the estrogen blocker too and am using products like I-Carbinol 3 and DIM. If you got such adverse effects with only one injection, that is incredible. I think eventually you will be ok. Maybe I will have to wait years to get rid of the effect of four injections. They lie when they say Prolia will leave your body. I can feel it swirling inside me! I have no lining on my lips and I cannot describe how disgusting it feels every day inside my mouth, so I wear an ugly mouth guard at my house. This allows my mouth to stay open so that I dont have to deal with the gross sensation inside my mouth. If you ever find a lawyer who will even HEAR our cases and try to help us, please let me know!!
Re: Dawn (# 2737)
I’m so sorry to hear of your problems. Your problems sound similar to mine except that the worst for me has been the sores and discomfort in my mouth. It has been about 4 years ago that I had the 1st of 3 injections. It wasn’t until a friend suggested it could be prolia as the doctor( an obgyn!.) had said she’d never had a patient experience any side effects! I eventually lost a front tooth due to infection. If you read the warnings( I didn’t nor did my Dr point out) . It took 2 more years of dental bone grafts and an implant that I finally have a tooth. All I can say is stop prolia now and tell all your friends, neighbours, etc to avoid it like the plague. I ,too , am Canadian and have tried to contact journalists to investigate others with side effects. Good luck.
Andrea (# 2740) --
Andrea,,
Your symptoms sound very similar to mine. I have to put aquaphor ointment on my lips every night. I too, wear a night guard. Food stings my mouth so I love to eat anything cold like ice cream, yogurt, applesauce , etc. I’ve seen a dental specialist who has tried everything, done blood tests to no avail! At the moment she has suggested Alpha Lipoic Acid ( sundown naturals) 600 mg daily. I have been taking it for 3 months now and either it’s a coincidence but my mouth is feeling better....not perfect but not quite so bad. I also put biotene gel on my mouth guard at night to help dry mouth. Good luck with any cure your Dr suggests.
Re: Judy (# 2729)
You are correct. There are people who suffer no ill effects, Perhaps it is luck, or perhaps some metabolic factors that cause the rest of us to suffer.
I do believe that there are cases when it is appropriate, but those cases are few compared with the number of people prescribed. I believe there should be a criteria for prescribing, also, there should be a limit on which medical specialty should be allowed to prescribe. Thieve are powerful, potent metabolic drugs; I am concerned that any specialist can prescribed. Endocrinology should be the primary specialist, perhaps Rheumatology. I don’t see these criteria ever happening because that would severely limit profits. I don’t know where you live, but here in the U.S., our health care is a profit based system.
When I refused any more Prolia, I was told that I would be back in a year needing it again.
Well, guess what, according me o my labs, I am not losing any more bone !!
My bone density is not due until next January. I am not worried about it, since I believe that is a scam. Comparing the density of a 70 year old to a 30 year old, ridiculous.
Do 30 year old have grey hair and wrinkles? Who designed this test anyway ?
I wonder if it was Big Pharma.
2 years after Prolia, I still have ill effects of pain in my feet and ankles, especially my toes.
It seemed like overnight they became painful and severely misshapen. Probably I did have arthritis, but to go so quickly ? Especially my toes, they are full of knobs.
The other issues I had was Thyroid. My Thyroid was the other issue that took two years post Prolia to resolve. It took going Gluten free to heal my Thyroid.
Initially, I developed a severe HypoCalcemia and Hyperparathyroidism. 3 doctors blew me off, including the Endocrinologist who prescribed it. I went out state to a previous doctor who immediately diagnosed me. This is why I tell everyone to be vigilant and advocate for themselves.
Sorry for the long note, but I feel passionate about this.
I have made it my business to spread the word, not just about Prolia, but all the other Osteo drugs.
Re: Andrea (# 2765)
I never had any major mouth issues, fortunately, perhaps just sensitivity to spices. Yours sound dreadful.
My issues were varied - every kind of skin problem, new allergies and immunological disorders, elevated iron levels, hair loss and much more. Probably the worst was massive lethargy for about a year. I had so many invéstigations for so many diseases! And there was the unsteadiness and loss of balance.
These have very gradually diminished in the 20 months since my second (and last) Prolia injection. My skin finally looks fairly normal and any itching is mostly bearable. I can usually wear ordinary clothes and jewelry without them leaving great welts or purple blotches on my skin.
I tried to drink lots of water, hoping to flush the poison from my cells. I have no idea if this made a difference.
My new doctor commented recently on how well I look, and I am about to take on some temporary work and feeling reasonably confident about it. After almost two years of feeling terrible most of the time it's a big change to my life, this feeling normal thing!
JenjiOz (# 2769) --
It also took me 2 years after my last shot before I felt better. My various symptoms of fatigue, lethargy, weight gain, weakness, blurred vision were due to Prolia affecting my Thyroid . The joint issues are less acute also. What finally helped me was going Gluten free. Gluten is highly inflammatory, stopping it helped reduce the inflammation in my body.
Re: Debbie (# 2783)
My mother died 6 months after receiving the Prolia.
Re: Dawn (# 2785)
please let me know if anyone in US and Canada can get in on a lawsuit. My life is forever changed . I am doing all I can health-wise to make myself normal again, but my mouth situation does not improve. I had four injections and my last one was last May. I would love to hear from anyone that can get help for the victims of this horrible drug.
Re: Dawn (# 2791)
I too am a nurse, and I kick myself for not being more pro active with research.
Problem was, I was frightened, so I broke down and accepted it. Big mistake !
Re: Laura (# 2799)
How dreadful for you, I am sorry.
Have you tried supplements. ?
My advice to everyone is to check out the Save Our Bones website. It certainly empowered me.
Be well.
