Updated

I would like to know of any side effects others may have experienced after receiving Prolia infusions. Up to now I have none.

I had my Prolia injection a couple weeks ago. Last week I started having ankle and back pain, but it is not too bad. Yesterday I started having tightness in my chest, which I Don't like at all. It is hard to take a deep breath. I was wondering if anyone else has had the tightness and how long it lasts

Re: Sherry (# 2188) Expand Referenced Message

Sherry, I too experienced joint and muscle pain as well as sores in my mouth. I have been off Prolia a little over a year now but still dealing with some side effects. A rotator cuff tear which is slowly improving after 2 cortizone shots and extensive physio. I still see a dental specialist re my mouth problem. Watch your gums as Prolia affects the immune system and I lost a front tooth due to a severe infection even after a treatment with penicillin. I now wear a "flipper" until I get a tooth implant. Only hoping that I won't need a bone graft as well. Take care and from experience things do slowly improve once you go off that horrid Prolia. I have since met people and doctors who have had it even worse and were hospitalized due to such horrendous side effects. And yet, it's still on the market!!go figure!!

Update . It's been five months after my first and last prolia shot. Within the last few days, I've noticed less hair loss, but still have aches in upper thighs when walking. Breathing is still comprised. I have talked to reps at Amgen, still cannot get definitive answers to my questions. I told them the inability to answer questions makes me extremely suspect of this drug. I believe they really don't have answers since they are still waiting for long term studies . SCARY DRUG IMHO

I forgot to mention: My C Reactive Protein is quite elevated. This is a marker for inflammation in the body Inflammation explains many of the symptoms we experience. It took until a couple of weeks ago to find a Dr. who did not treat me like a crank. He ordered the test, and now I am taken more seriously.
This was not elevated before Prolia. Although I was following an anti 8nflammatory food plan, U have found another one that takes it to a higher level, and was developed by a research scientist specializing in inflammatory conditions. It is too soon to see any effect, except that I have not had rashes.

Re: Jan (# 2194) Expand Referenced Message
There is no 'specific' time to have invasive dental work done after Prolia. When all the side effects have cleared your body, you are safe to go. Some people do better than others with this drug.

I also agree that Amgen does not know the answers to our questions. That is why they are doing a ten year study on it and I kind of believe we are in that study. All of our complaints to them would probably be included in their study. MD's really don't understand us either. All they can do is to attempt to treat the specific problem(s) we are experiencing. Personally, I would love to see Prolia taken off the market in all countries. It's a wonder drug that wasn't. Be well~Pood

I had no choice about having my teeth being pulled. They started breaking off at the gum line and I eventually lost all of my top teeth. My doctor still won’t admit that Prolia had anything to do with it. Amazing. Some dentist won’t work on you until the Prolia has left. My oral surgeon says you never get rid of all of it.

I have posted before but I have had all kinds of things happen since then. No dr. will even listen to me when I mention Prolia. I had osteopenia, never had osteoporosis.
I have rheumatoid arthritis. I was doing good but my rheumatologist decided to give a shot of prolia in May 2016. It has been awful every since. I had a hip replacement 7 yrs. ago never had any problem with it. When she gave me the shot I felt it trying to attach my hip. Tomorrow I see a dr. because the hip feels like it could be a small brake. It's is so painful I can barely get around. I have been to every kind of specialist their is since I was given Prolia. The doctors hasn't found anything yet.

I certainly identify . it has been difficult getting Dr.'s to listen. My issues just keep compounding. I have a new pain management Dr. and he has taken me seriously. In fact, after he saw me, He saw another patient who had a severe exacerbation of symptoms, plus new ones; now he has another one . He is trying to establish enough evidence to warrant a study.

Re: Jan (# 2194) Expand Referenced Message

Kayleen, I'm not by any means a dental specialist but I had to have a front tooth pulled 4 months ago due to a severe infection in my tooth caused by Prolia. It had eaten away so much of the tooth that it wouldn't hold a crown. I am now waiting till January to see the oral surgeon regarding an implant and nothing was said regarding not doing it due to Prolia. In my case, though, I have been off it for over a year but not 5 that you were told. I see my regular dentist this Tuesday so I'll also ask him. I'm curious as to why your dentist mentioned 5 years. Did he give you any reason?

Re: Jan (# 2202) Expand Referenced Message

Thanks, Jan. I will not be seeing the oral surgeon until I'm almost 2 years off Prolia. I certainly will give her the info you gave me. I, too, had mouth sores which have slowly gone away. I have been seeing an oral specialist who also said she had been treating patients for the same problem and had also been on Prolia. I think, on top of all these side effects is the horrendous costs to have all of them attended to. Fortunately in Canada we do have our provincial health insurance to deal with most medical problems but not dental. My private insurance covers some of my dental problems but not implants or anything pertaining to them!

Re: Jan (# 2202) Expand Referenced Message

Jan, saw my regular dentist yesterday and he was very impressed with how my gums have healed where I had my front tooth pulled. I don't see the oral surgeon until the end of January and will see, then, whether it's a go for the implant and possibly a bone graft. I eat a high calcium diet( no calcium supplements) and am taking 4000 ius of vitamin D daily along with C and a B complex. Naturally I'm concerned about jaw bone problems as I have had 2 surgeries on my jaw due to TMJ so my oral surgeon is being very conservative dealing with any problems with an implant.

That was my first side effect. Turns out, I had hypoCalcemia. It might be worth having your calcium level checked.

Does everyone have severe osteoporosis?.. because I don’t. I broke my wrist. Im 58. I was given this injection btw thinking that it was going to be in pill form. But a new “dr of nursing practice “ specially of rheumatology and orthopedics “ sets my appointment the same time as my Botox injection. This was strange because she did both saying there wasn’t going to be any side effects other than a possible headache! I said that’s what I’m getting the Botox for! I have have horrible migraines. I was very apprehensive at the time and felt pressured. But trusting her anyway went against my gut feeling that something wasn’t right. Prior to that on the forms a number of things come into my mind that really doesn’t make sense then.. but they do now. I remember that she was the one who filled it out.. I didn’t.. it was verbal. Due to my hand injury. And when I would say something she would say,” oh “,”you have that right?” I didn’t say yes. My injection was August 22,2017 My life took a horrible turn down a slow painful process that’s inside my bones and not doing anything good. Despite me calling and reporting my so called “side effects” to both the F.D.A and her office , I’m just calling it what it is ...it’s down right poisen! Ok so here’s the list . migraines.fatigue, weakness, hair loss ,deep bone pain , tightness in throat and jaw. Gum soreness, bleeding, Acid reflux, popping sounds of joints. Both patella ( knees ) extremely low blood pressure.. and if all all that’s not enough... I literally developed a bone cyst overnight on my clavicle that is the size of a walnut. If this is what happened to you, or somebody you know.. this drug has got to be stopped. Who did they do use in the clinical trials research on? Dead people.? Because that’s how it makes me feel.

Re: Sedona (# 33) Expand Referenced Message

Hello, just came upon your post. It sounds like my story. I also have copd and it definitely is worse since my first shot in June iPod this year. My pulmunologist doesn't comment, even though I told him I'm quite sure the shot made me worse. It's been almost 6 months since my first (and only) prolia shot. Could you please tell me if you've seen any improvement since your off of prolia. Would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thank you
Barbara

Re: Betsey B (# 2208) Expand Referenced Message

What our Drs. do not seem to be realizing is that Prolia is a last ditch effort to save our bones when ALL of the previous have failed. It is not unusual to get a large bone growth some place on the body. They have been reported in sinus and eye sockets. At least yours can be removed but it's going to cause discomfort. I do not know for sure if the lumps it deposits has bone marrow in them or not. If not, no problem to have it removed. Bones only get really super upset when the marrow is turned loose on the human body causing lots of immflamuation. Your side effects from the injection read as normal. You should start getting much better now that your immune system has returned to normal. Hang in there and you will get thru this journey. Be well~

Re: Kell (# 2204) Expand Referenced Message

Not all dentists do implants. Some are specialists that only do implants. The dentist only puts on the crown when all has healed -- about 6 months. The dentist should have had her on antibiotics before doing invasive dental work. Let this be a reminder to all! Be well~

I must say that I could write a book about this nasty drug. I posted early on that I got 1 shot in August, 2011 and am still suffering from the side effects and I don't believe your body ever gets rid of the effects. I don't mean to disappoint anyone but I am now 76 and I continue to have issues. Have seen countless new doctors and they can't answer the questions. It just needs to be taken off the market. 'Nuff said.
