Updated

I would like to know of any side effects others may have experienced after receiving Prolia infusions. Up to now I have none.

Thank you Sal. It is not so much wise as it is mistrusting of the drug companies. I truly do hate what they are doing to those they are supposed to be trying to help, for nothing more than the almighty dollar.

I had resisted even having the bone scan because I was pretty sure what it would say but when my family doctor retired and I had to start seeing a new to me one I felt pressured to have it done. I expected it to be bad but -4.2 surprised even me. It surprised and concerned me enough to consider his advice to start the prolia infusions until I started digging around and found out just how horrible this stuff can really be.

Seem like I just have to train another Doctor. He will learn that I will not take most of what he will want to recommend. He even called in a prescription for cholesterol medication for me without even discussing it with me. Needless to say I didn't pick it up. My sister swears that her fibro started when she was put on the statin line of drugs. I will just stick to my red yeast rice. I had slacked off of it for a while but by the time I have my next blood test my cholesterol will be back where it should be without touching his dangerous drugs.

The only two things I actually need him for at this point is for my Levothyroxin (been taking it for at least 20 years and really had to think about it before committing to it for the rest of my life), my Tramadol (it keeps my osteo bearable) and occasional blood tests. Seems Doctors are sometimes necessary but I learned long ago that they are not GOD even though some of them think they are. I know that there are some very good doctors though and for that I am thankful.

For someone new to this forum searching for answers. Please Please think long and hard before allowing this dangerous drug into your body. You may be one of the lucky one but do you really want to play Russian Roulette with your health. Be well ladies and gentlemen.

I was pressured too. Actually frightened into it. I avoided it for almost 2 years. I do not like biologicals they do so much damage. I did it to satisfy my dr and also to cooperate. Never again. Just praying that my health returns at some point.

Same here, Goat C. It came as q Schick because my previous study was nowhere near this level. What clinched it for me was finding out I had spinal fractures. That was when I was pressured, and since I was frightened, I was vulnerable and caved in. I rue the day. My life is just beginning to resume; although I am no way ready for Pilates!..

Mattie~There i an old one that works and works well but Drs. don't like it. There is no money in it. It is called Calcitonin. It's made from salmon but has zero fish smell. It works by putting down new bone, not old bone like Prolia does. Your best bet to get a script would be from an Orthopedic Specialist/surgeon. My Mother had extremely severe osteoporosis and after she started on it, she never broke another bone in her life and she did fall often. I got mine from a different Doctor. I LOVE it. I fell on my new hip on the hardwoods and nothing happened to me at all. I got up and kept on going. There is help but it is difficult to get. It does not interfere with the immune system at all. You stay healthy and well and it builds up your bones. Check it out please. Pood

Sal, I ,too, was told I had a spinal fracture which scared the heck out of me and drove me to agree to this dreadful drug. It has been a year since my last injection and I am a still suffering big time. I've lost a front tooth and now wear a flipper until I am ready for an implant. Even then I may need a bone graft! I have just had a second shot of cortizone to help relieve the pain I am suffering in my shoulder and even then it, of course , is only temporary. It also is not good for my bones, thinning them but I can't, at the moment, deal with any long term pain. And the doctor who prescribed it said it was all related to stress in my life!! The sores in my mouth seem to be abating but I still suffer from dry mouth. I have been told that long term relief for my rotator cuff tear may be stem cell treatment which is very costly and probably out of reach financially. So , I guess, we can only hope that with time all things will eventually improve and we'll have our lives back again. Oh yeah, the stress that supposedly caused all of this has, ironically, caused stress and I'm now seeing a psychiatrist who has put me on Mirtazapine which also has side effects! As I've only been on it for a little over a week I hope I don't suffer from them too but I do know my anxiety is not quite so bad but I do feel groggy as it makes you sleepy. That's another story about drugs!

Judy,
I am so sorry that all of this is happening to you.

I too am experiencing anxiety from this.

At this writing, I am at the airport for a long planned vacation. It is my hope that the change will help me relax .

Ps There is an NSAID injectable called Toredal. It gave me great relief, although temporary. This is not cortisone,.

Poodle...I have actually read every post on this thread. It took me a few days but was well worth the time spent reading it. I have noted your comments about Calcitonin and it does seem like an option. Thank you for all the information you have posted about it. For now I am going to give the Strontium,Vitamin K and D3 a try and see if it helps.

Goat c...I am so sorry to hear that you were scared and pressured into getting the infusion. Hopefully it will soon be out of your system and you will get your life back.

Mattie,

Don't forget to eat your greens!
Also bone broth( especially chicken - highest in collagen) can be helpful.

Thanks Sal. I will be sure to do that. Fortunately I do love my greens.

You are so very welcome Goat c. I am sure it does help to interact with folks that understand what you are going through.

Sal~guess what we get when we quit this poison -- spinal fractures and I have the proof of them. That is also listed by Amgen. Prolia ia a lose-lose proposition. I did not want it and I knew it was bad but my Dr. insisted I have it and in only 3 months she was doing everything humanly possible to get it out of me and she worked with an Immunologist. She apologized all over the place and thought it would help me with an upcoming total hip replacement. What stupidity. Surgeons don't operate on people that have impaired immune systems. There are already too many dangers with total joint replacement and we definitely need a very good immune system. I think all of us should work with an Immunologist with this poison in our bodies. They have keys to our immune system to help us back to health. I cannot go into detail what she did but I can tell you that I was well by the 6th month at which time I had a cataract removed in another State and then had my hip replaced close to where I live. I also have very severe osteoarthritis and that is why I have so many joint replacements...one more to go and I should be okay. For the spine, we have a Dr. that burns the nerves coming out of the spine that cause us the pain. It lasts about 7-8 years before it has to be done again. They can do it for other parts of the body too, like a foot, etc. The nerves eventually grow back together again and that is why it only lasts 7-8 years. I'm in a somewhat small cowtown so if I can find the help we need, I believe all of you can too. You need cooperation and appropriate referrals. Medical Doctors have to take us seriously! There are obviously some people that can tolerate Prolia but I sure don't know any nor would I ever take any biologic drug again in my life. They are all the same and impair our immune systems. NOTE TO JUDY: Mirtazapine will never bother you in the least. I've taken it in the largest amount possible and been on it for 10 years - no problems! I promise!¡ Take it at night as it is supposed to help sleep. You should awaken refreshed. In our combinations for our bones, please add calcium supplement, 600mg x3/;day preferably with acidic stomach so I drink some OJ or Limeade, etc. Most of them come with the Vitamin D we also need if we don't get sufficient sun on our skin. Hope I have addressed everyone's concerns. Additional note- an injection of a steroid will not hurt your bones. Be well my friends. You all are in my thoughts and prayers~Pood

Thanks for your info on Mirtazapine ,Pood,. My problem is that I have been on Trazodone for many years and am worried about taking the 2 together. I spoke to my pharmacist and he has put my mind at rest and I now am gradually weaning myself off the Trazodone. As to my shoulder problem , my niece had terrible problems with a tear in the groin area and eventually, at great cost, went to the Cleveland Clinic in Toronto and after a consultation was advised and had a stem cell treatment which completely healed her problem. I just spoke to my brother and he said that it is worth having a consult as it's covered by our provincial health plan and at least I'll know if I might be a candidate for the procedure. This has been going on for 10 months now. The stress of this and dealing with my sister's death last week due to a virulent cancer and my husband's collapses due to AFib have taken a huge toll on my health. Pood, how long did it take for Mirtazapine to take effect . I'm still not sleeping well and feel groggy most of the day. I finally had to take some lorazepam at 2 in the morning. I hate taking any meds and am trying hard to wean myself of all those that I don't really need. Also , as to calcium, I was told not to take it as it can cause problems with the heart but to get it from natural sources which I try to do. At the moment I'm not seeing any osteo doctor because I refuse to go back to the one who prescribed Prolia , which she called a miracle drug!! Again Pood, thanks for your continued interest and help, not just for me , but all of us.

Judy, Sal and I are using collagen daily. Calcium does cause calcification of plaque in the coronary arteries of the heart. I am using bone broth protein in my shakes regularly. I exercise regularly, walk daily, and do yoga all in an effort to retard the osteoporosis and maybe rebuild bone as well.

Judy~I don't know how much Mirtazapine you are taking. It can be up to 90mg at bedtime. That is the max that will not cause liver damage. Why are you on two different anti-depressants? Not good idea. Ask your Psychiatrist for something to help you sleep through the whole night. My recommendation would be Valium because it is the least addictive of the Benzos. There is another nice little drug that can fit well in there called Temazepam which is also a Benzo but a very different type. Go back and say current protocol is not working well. We need to change it. Mirtz was never meant to last all night long. That's why you are waking up and needing something else. Sometimes we have to go back every couple of weeks until they get 'our formula' perfect. On occasion, I have returned the Rx'd drug with only one night of use. It either works or not. They save them and give them to other people. Hope this helps some.Just be sure to take the Mirtaz. at bedtime. It's side effect is to help cause sleep and it is a SSRI antidepressant. Hugs~Pood

There is a large stem cell clinic in Denver, CO. They would not do something as complex as your shoulder. They use them more for people that are just starting to get joint problems. I don't think any insurance covers it yet because it is too new.
Be well~Pood

Pood, thanks for your concern. I am on 15 mg of Mirtazapine.many years ago I was on Wellbutrin which affected my sleep so I was also put on 50 mg of Trazodone. I eventually stopped the Wellbutrin but remained on the Trazodone. I would like very much to wean myself off and have talked to the psychiatrist . Yesterday he phoned me to see how I was doing as I've only been on the Mirtazapine for 1 1/2 weeks. He said that as I'm on such a low dose of Trazodone I shouldn't worry about any drug interaction and the next time we meet we can discuss weaning off the Trazodone. So far none of this has helped my sleep . I did take 1/2 mg lorazepam last night and actually slept. There has been an extraordinary amount of stress the last while with me. My sister died last week after a 6 month battle with duodenal cancer. At the same time my husband had what they are calling "drops" and was in the hospital. He has atrial fib and they feel it was the beta- blocker he's on so have changed his meds. He also has what was diagnosed by a terrible dr as having had a seizure and was put on meds, had his license revoked and caused much anxiety. I complained to the hospital as this Dr would do no further testing and I asked for a neurologist who had seen him when he had a stroke 5 years ago. He's taken over and is questioning the diagnosis. My husband is booked for a "sleep deprived" EEG in 2 weeks. Guess I'll be deprived as well! Thus, maybe you can see where I'm coming from and the stress I've been dealing with along with the side effects of that dreadful Prolia.
As to the Cleveland Clinic in Toronto, it does various injections, treatments, etc and I'm getting nowhere with referrals through the normal channels so even if I have to pay out of pocket I'm beginning to feel that this is my only option. And it's right on the subway line so easy to get to without driving through our horrendous traffic in downtown Toronto!
Hugs back.

Once discontinuing inj's., how long does it take to rid my body of residual effects? Any suggestions to speed the process?

Just want to share my experience regarding what I believe to be the effects of Prolia.

I requested my records to establish when I began the Prolia shots. 1st shot in 3/2015, 2nd 10/2015, 3rd 7/2016. By end of July of 2016, I began to experience occasional nausea. Then by September, it was almost every day. I use to tell the young girls at work it must be "morning sickness" because it was so frequent (I was 75 yrs old - then it was no longer a joking matter). The doctor was unable to determine the cause.

In the end of October, I passed out & went to ER and learned I had an internal bleed with absolutely no prior indications. I lost 20% of my blood volume the 1st night, which required 2 blood transfusions. After a long recovery, I began to feel better for awhile and resumed the shots. My last shot (4th) was 5/2017. Now it's August 2017 and I'm back to barely functioning. I believe there is no other explanation for my decline. Therefore, I will no longer take the shots and am hoping for a better quality of life.

Other side effects experienced:
1-Weight loss 20 lbs in 6 months (I only weighed 103 lbs to start).
2-Chronic weakness (not just tiredness)
3-Back pain
4-Hot flashes
5-Dry "patches"

These are the side effects the prolia shot. I haven't had bleeding. I have all the others plus hair loss. I really don't know when it ends i had my shot in July of 2017 and it was my first. I will take no more. Hope you have filed a safety report with Amgen and the FDA. I have the more who do the less might be harmed by this awful drug.

Kell,
I can tell you that my last shot was back in January of this year. I have suffered horribly. Just now, I am beginning to notice some improvement. While I am not power walking 3miles. day, I did slowly walk for 30 minutes.

I had my first and last shot Aug 25 2017..I'm a 58 y.o woman who now has terrible acid reflux, nausea, headaches, backaches from prolia. The injection gave me jaw bone soreness that did go away. .however who knows what that may have caused. This is the worst medication I have ever been on. Shame on these doctors and pharmaceutical companies for jeopardizing patients with snake oil!!.. all about the money!!
