Prolia & Hair Loss (Page 8)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I've just recently had my second Prolia shot. So far so good...a little back pain. I continually have stress fractures on my feet and have also taken fosamax. My current problem is hair loss & I wondered if anyone else was having that problem?

Re: Anne (# 20) Expand Referenced Message

After my third injection on October 30th 2018, my hair loss was so significant that I became more anxious than I already am. I began to investigate what I am doing differently. I take no other medications other than Prolia--and came across this thread and it makes sense. Initially, I was suggested calcium supplements but the specialist highly recommended Prolia, probably because at the time, a year ago, my hair was still thick. I am hoping that I can go back to just supplements, exercise, good diet, and restful sleep, because now I have more heat flashes at night than when I first became menopausal, 10 years ago. Thank you for this opportunity.

I had one shot and started losing hair two weeks later. Am a month overdue for the second shot ( which I did not get) and am still losing hair along with other issues.

Yes, I lost a lot of hair and all of my top teeth. Never will take this horrible drug again. Also had my stomach go up into
My esophagus two weeks after my one and only Prolia injection. I could have died and had to have surgery.

The teeth thing scares me. I had awful mouth infections after the shot-- now I have teeth pain and some infection( have been off Prolia for a month). I am really careful and persistent with maintenance of teeth but just dread the dental visit.

Yes, I have the same problem, never thought about prolia. Glad you mention this because I have been losing hair ever since I started the injections. I changed shampoo and conditioner several times, now I know. I have finished the injections and my doctor wants me to start a different treatment but I decided I am finished.

How many Prolia shots did you get in total? At what point did you start losing your hair?

Yes! Ive lot tons of hair. The loss occurs throughout the 6 months but it lessens as time goes on. Mine does not grow back. I am not taking the drug as nymore due to so much hair loss.

I did not take my last shot- so I have been off Prolia for about a month. Hair still falling out a lot ..Now a sonogram indicates parathyroid issues; am also having eye problems. On the positive side the constant overwhelming fatigue has been somewhat alleviated. The acid reflux also has improved a bit. Rashes still pop up everywhere. It is discouraging.

Re: Marilyn (# 320) Expand Referenced Message

Hi. I also had massive hair loss but after the first shot. Now 15 months later I still have terrible acid reflux, vertigo, sleeplessness, skin problems, bone pain. After several letters to Amgen they denied that it was the drug that caused all these problems, but we all know better, as it has affected our lives in a manner that is not acceptable. These side effects should be given in full and explained in detail by doctors or nurses, and then a choice can be made. After the shot my bone scan showed barely any difference so all that suffering was for nothing.

YES!! But I didn't notice it until the third injection. I think that is because the increase in loss was gradual, but now large amounts come out every time I shampoo. There was nothing in the information I got from my physician or at the Amgen site that advised me this might happen. I would not have started Prolia had I known about this beforehand. My specialist did not discount me when I complained about it, so I know I'm not the first of his patients to have this problem. He suggested that I could try Fortea instead. Has anyone had experience with that, and what were the side effects? Since Fortea is daily versus having a drug in your system for six months, he suggested I could stop it if problems surfaced. I am having numerous other issues that I believe are related to Prolia, because I never experienced them before: Fatigue, acid reflux, persistent cough (complete ENT evaluation revealed no other source), vertigo (one extreme episode right after an injection), eye pain (Ophthalmologist could find no other source) and the hair loss.

You bet. Every one I’ve heard about is having this same problem. Mine is so thin that on top I use the stuff Joan Rivers sold, it's to paint your scalp/thin spots so your scalp does not show. And the other problems like teeth, just had one that broke off at gums had to have it took out and and in order to put one in, had to have the one beside it took out so I could have a bridge put in. My insurance would not pay a penny, so that cost over 1,500 dollars, the bone is deteriorating and I can’t wear dentures. I think enough taking has been done. I think something else needs to be done and this company pay for all the damages done from this Prolia shot. It is to blame.

Re: Marilyn (# 312) Expand Referenced Message

I have read from other posts that they feel the Prolia interfered with their immune system and gave arthritis a hold on their body. While I have had bone pain it has not been consistent. Have you had your knees exrayed or tried to seek some relief for them? Four miles a day is awesome! I am hoping this is temporary for you. The acid reflux is really a hard problem for me and is debilitating... I am hoping that it will abate some when I do not take the shot. I had reflux prior to the shot, but it has been really bad since the shot. Don't know if I can blame the shot, but we'll see if it gets better.

How long has it been since your second inj.? Has it been long enough that you don't believe your hair will grow back in?

Yes I had to quit Prolia after 2nd shot, had rash then begin to notice hair loss very thin. I never had real thick hair so I will need a wig. You can see my scalp. I am upset but over the fact there is one drug left a new one that I applied for, we are appealing it. Took Forteo good results. Took fortical, and another nasal spray. Cannot take Fosamax or related drugs have Barret esophagus. Gerd. So just waiting for approval and praying.

I also have terrible pain in my hip and legs which I never had before . Also acid reflux which I had never ever had before this injection. Not being able to sleep more than 3 hrs per night since this poison was put into my system , and so much more. Like permanent UTI s and so it goes on. It is a poison without doubt and a very profitable one for Amgen who continue to deny all side effects.

Re: Lizzie (# 313) Expand Referenced Message

I have had three shots, the last one in June. The fatigue has been with me since the first one in June of 2017. The joint pain started the first of this year, soon after the second shot and has been persistent for months with no relief. I had a very severe vertigo incident early in the year that I wrote off as the flu, as I was quite ill for several days and it took several weeks to completely shake the dizziness. My doctor said he was certain it was not the flu, and more likely benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. And now with the third, I am dealing with the hair loss and acid reflux. I was hopeful when you said symptoms leveled off, as I was thinking you meant that would be the case over time with more shots. My experience indicates that the side effects multiply and increase over time and with more shots.

Re: Marilyn (# 312) Expand Referenced Message

I only have had the one shot.. the second is due this month but I will not be taking it. Side effects seem to level off but then just cycle back in in again. Hair will stop shedding for a week or so and then start up at a faster rate. Mouth infections disappear and then reappear-- they are stronger than the previous bout but do not last as long. Bone pain just seems to pop up at random and lasts a few days, disappears and reappears in a different body part. I am encouraged by what I read here with several people regaining hair after a while ( along while in some cases ), but pain and teeth problems seem to linger.

Re: Lizzie (# 311) Expand Referenced Message

How many shots have you had, and at what point did it level off? I am 75 and feel like my quality of life has been destroyed. Before starting Prolia, I was walking four miles a day, and now the joint pain in my knees is so bad that I cannot do that. Seems to me that walking and exercise would do more to build bone than being poisoned with this drug. In the year since my first shot, I have dealt with one thing after another. In addition to the hair loss, vertigo, joint pain and fatigue, I was diagnosed with acid reflux, which I have never experienced before.

Gamp (# 309) --

I do not think it is "age related". There are many people on this site who are younger and experience what you are experiencing. I am older than you and never had any hair loss or mouth pain or bone pain until Prolia. I hate the hair loss more than anything which is dumb because that is just vanity, but it is what it is. Just have faith that this will eventually level out for you. Do not let yourself feel "old" because of this awful drug.
