Prolia & Hair Loss (Page 5) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI've just recently had my second Prolia shot. So far so good...a little back pain. I continually have stress fractures on my feet and have also taken fosamax. My current problem is hair loss & I wondered if anyone else was having that problem?
Pood - I made an appointment to see an endocrinologist to talk about the side effects of Prolia. I may also see a dermatologist, but the meds that they use also seem to come with some scary side effects. So, I'm going to wait on that. My Oncologist doesn't think that Prolia is the cause of my hair loss due to the fact that I'm taking estrogen inhibitors. And I admit, I do get hair thinning from the inhibitors, but not fall out like this. I've been on them for 2 years and have never had this happen to the point that I can see my scalp. After finally getting my hair back from chemo - to now be going through this is devastating and frustrating to say the least. It's upsetting and I just don't know what to do.
I called Amgen and they said that the med remains in your system for 4-5 months which is why you need another shot at 6 months. I have to believe that this will stop in a few months.
I started treating my hair with coconut oil because it's also very dry. That seems to be helping a bit. I also take Biotin and have a follicle stimulating system from my salon. Oh, and I bought an all natural oil remedy that if nothing else helps treat my scalp. I'm hoping that my hair can hang on a few more months until this crap is out of my system.
Trying to be positive, but I must say after all I've been through, being positive is exhausting.
I am four weeks post my first prolia injection and i have not felt this bad since i did chemotherapy twice before for breast cancer. So far i haven't had the hair issue, but i am afraid that will be next. I have had the bone pain, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and extreme, extreme fatigue!! I am missing work and am tired of getting no answers. My oncologist started me on steroids which helped until I tapered off of them and the side effects came right back; maybe even worse. I will certainly never take another injection.
It has now been 19 months since my one & only Prolia inj. My hair is still coming out beyond belief. I have an appointment with an endocrinologist in a couple of weeks to get my immune system checked out & see if the devil's drug is still playing around with me of which I'm sure of. I will take my gallon baggie of hair with me for proof of what I have endured the last 19 months. I can now see my scalp & find it harder & harder to cover up. My message is: never have a prolia inj.!
I must tell everyone that I refused my second injection. This was my doctor's comment:"Well, you know all drugs have side-effects!" My answer, "Yes, but I am not going to end up bald and there is NOTHING that tells users of hair loss." SO-O-o, I'm to go back in one year. BTW, I'm almost 80, so I might not need that one. He was not so pleased with me, but, who cares. He did tell me there is a NEW MED coming out in 2018. He will look at that for me. I will always be so thankful for this website. I had the itching everywhere, TMJ, and hair loss. My legs and ankles stay swelled. But, I thank all of you for helping me.
The information on the Prolia leaflet does not mention hair loss. HMMM, that would be because every woman would stop getting that very expensive shot, that after 4 years the bone scan showed no improvement.
Everyone Stop right now. Consider the fact that Prolia has a twin called Xgeva. There is just less of the active ingredient in Prolia than Xgeva which treats cancer. What happens to people that go thru chemo? They lose their hair, all of it. With Prolia, we don't lose all of it, just a goodly amount of thinning. I am many years out from my one and only Prolia injection but I am still shedding like a dog. Today when I took a shower my hair had the drain plugged up. I gathered it all up and am taking it to my Primary. It is true that after age 20, hair starts to thin but there is a huge difference to what Prolia does and 'normal' thinning. Mine is short and I use 4 handfuls of Mousse to make it look thicker. When that wears off, I use another product for natural curly hair. You have to get inventive to please yourself somewhat. Hope this explains the situation everyone is going thru. Be well~Pood
This side effect has been kept very silent and I would think that there should be some kind of legal suit brought against these doctors and drug companies.
When everyone gets back from their dermatologist, please post the result here so we can keep a count on it for the possibility of a legal suit against Amgen. Going bald is definitely not listed as one of the side effects, but then teeth dying at the gum line is not listed either. I'm frantically searching for an attorney to represent all Prolia victims and the more evidence we have, the better.
The process is well described in the Wikipedia link I posted last week, as well as both uses. Denosumab stops the formation of osteoclasts, which are cells that remove old bone cells. The definition of chemotherapy is any chemical that is used to treat cancer. A clear conclusion can be drawn from that. Denosumab, in the higher dosage of 120 mg, is named Xgeva, & is used in treating a form of cancer. Denosumab in the 60 mg dosage is Prolia. Same drug. As mentioned in a couple of posts by others, billed & identified as chemo by the medical industry. The inj's. are normally given in the infusion center, where cancer patients are treated with chemo, because of the nature of the medication. My doctor's office told me they are not permitted to give the inj's., patients can only receive them in the infusion center. I would guess that's industry wide, but I don't know. The important thing is that this side effect is being reported by more people, which I hope will lead to Amgen acknowledging ALL the side effects & informing patients. What big pharma gets away with, at our expense!
Re: Sad lady (# 185)
I suffered terrible hair loss from Prolia. I feel we were not told the truth about the side effects because hair loss is not mentioned anywhere in the literature. I wish there was a legal suit because I would be a part of it. So not right to do this to consumers.
Prolia has a legal suit going on for permanent hair loss, plus many other serious side effects. Is this med for breast cancer?
Re: Poodle (# 210)
The numbness and tingling with the vertigo have been with me since day one and I feel that I can just about live with that as I know it will end after 6 months, and I am never having this drug again anyway. HOWEVER, the loss of nearly all my hair which I am told will only partially grow again after a year or so is another matter. This should be on the list of side effects so that a choice can be made when the inj. is suggested. I had no choice as it was not listed despite the fact that it is known to Amgem, which is very wrong and cruel considering the devastating effect losing ones hair has on a woman.
Re: Karen (# 217)
I am so sorry to hear that. This drug has some terrible side effects and I am sure Amgen do not know all of them and we are guinea pigs. They seem to have little regard for peoples suffering or at least should warn people of all side effects.
Re: teddt (# 223)
I wish you all the best and I hope your wife gets better as I know how she feels. I still can’t walk very good and this has affected my whole life, which I turn affects my family. Prayers your way and God Bless you and your wife and all who are involved. We have to come together to get this poison off the market!
Re: Sharyl (# 226)
I have a hard time walking and my feet are red hot all the time. The aches and pains have not stopped nor the hair loss and I have not had a shot in over 8 months now. Good luck and I wish you well again soon.
Re: Sharyl (# 225)
I’d be with anyone who wants to sue and take this crap off the market. I’ve been having sore gums, painful brushing my teeth, walking is difficult as my body wants to pull to one side and strange pain in lower right side of my back. Never had this before Prolia. I’ve 2 injections, certainly won’t go for more. Will talk to me doctor about it next week.
Re: Bubbles (# 237)
Hi, I am so sorry it has happened to you as well. I lost all my hair and now after 8 months it is coming back but not as hair, almost baby fluff. I was told by a dermatologist that this will grow out and proper hair will eventually grow. I know it will take a year or two at least. I have three wigs which are necessary to be able to go out and look normal. Some side effects have not gone away and am told they may never go. Amgen refuse to acknowledge these dreadful side effects and quote regulations etc etc and how careful they are. Absolute rubbish. So many people have suffered badly but money comes first. I believe we were being used in trials as hair loss is still not on the list of side effects. Hopefully people will read these messages and refuse to have the Prolia treatment.
Re: Patricia (# 3)
I’m having a lot of the symptoms you’re describing. My doctor highly recommended the prolia shots but now after seeing the pain I’m experiencing she’s told me to skip the next shot. I’ve decided to stop them completely. I’ve read that prolia never leaves our bodies. Even though I did skip one my aches are continuing to worsen. Hair loss is frightening. Everyone should be aware of side effects.
Re: Rosebud (# 239)
I am now 2 months past the 6 months after my first Prolia injection. I will never have another one as the side effects have not gone away. Total hair loss which seems to be growing very slowly and not like hair, peripheral neuropathy, vertigo, indigestion, inability to sleep at night more than a couple of hours, rashes, UTI's almost permanently, and so it goes on. I am waiting for the Dexa scan result to see if this dreadful drug actually increased my bone density. Will message when I get the result. People should be aware that it can have dreadful side effects for some people. If you escape with none then you are extremely fortunate.
Re: Bubbles (# 248)
Do not believe your doctor. There are hundreds of messages all stating that hair does fall out in many cases after a Prolia shot. I lost all of mine within 4 months. Now after 9 months I have fluff growing, not hair, and am told it will come after this has grown. The drug is a poison to certain people. The side effects I had were dreadful and still have some which I am told may never leave my body. Just one injection ruined my life.
