Prolia & Hair Loss (Page 12) (Top voted first)

Updated

I've just recently had my second Prolia shot. So far so good...a little back pain. I continually have stress fractures on my feet and have also taken fosamax. My current problem is hair loss & I wondered if anyone else was having that problem?

You need to get into a Rheumatologist for Prednisone for those nasty rashes that it causes. Secondly, for the pain - a Rheumatologist can order pain meds and there are also specialty PAIN Doctors that Rx them. You should work with a Rheumatologist in concert with an Immunologist to get the most help possible. I've been down this road for many years and still have problems cropping up such as muscle spasms and my hair is falling out badly. Only a Dermatologist can tell you if your hair is capable of growing or not. In the back pages I posted supplements we can take to help the hair grow if one can tolerate them. I could not. Muscle pain is stopped with Magnesium and you have to be very careful with it or you will have diarrhea. This last bottle of 250mg I bought from Walmart seems to be okay. I do not color my hair now at all and wash it the least amount possible. I keep it short and use a lot of volumizing mousse on it with NO hot air hair dryer. Hope this helps you a little.e Be well~

This response is 4 years after the initial message, so I don't know if you were able to remedy the hair loss problem. I started losing hair 2 weeks after the injection. Taking advice from someone on this site, I went to my dermatologist who said I had an aggressive rash in my scalp. We treated it with a steroid gel applied twice per day. The rash is mostly gone and the hair loss has slowed, but there is a definite patch gone...I dont know if it will come back. Prolia does cause rashes so maybe that is the cause of the hair loss.

Is there any way we can get a count of the people on this site who have lost hair after taking Prolia? Some of us have reported individually to Amgen and our doctors, but numbers might speak with more volume. I would put the time in to count people if I knew how to wade through all of the messages and the different threads. Also I don't know if permission would have to be granted to count even if names were not used. What do you think???

Statistics are so squirrely. One percent of how many? One percent of which population. "Researchers" can skew things any way they want. I think a lot more than one percent of those on this who respond to this site report having hair loss plus physically debilitating side effects...

I was going to get a bone scan before deciding to take the next Prolia shot. (I have only had one). However, regardless of the results (good or bad) I am not going to get the next shot. I have had the hair loss, raging mouth infections, and bone pain. I have been fighting the hair loss with my dermatologist and have slowed it up a little, but still lots gone and hair is way thin. Mouth infections recur. Bone pain comes and goes.. especially in my back (had no back pain prior to the shot). After reading the posts here, I know I have been blessed that none of my side effects have been debilitating... but I am not going to push my luck by taking another shot. This site is a place where honest feedback occurs re: Prolia and helps decision making. I am grateful for everyone's participation.

Sad lady (# 306) --

Agree! If I had found this site prior to taking the shot, I would not have taken it. My doctor told me none of his patients experienced any side effects from Prolia. When I reported my side effects to him, he said it was not the Prolia. (I guess firm denial is one way to be able to say that none of your patients experience side effects). This website address should be posted in every doctor's office.

Re: Charlene Guidry (# 304) Expand Referenced Message

I have had three Prolia injections, the first in June of 2017, so I have been on it for about fourteen months. Over the past few weeks, I have noticed that I have increasing amounts of hair falling out, and in the past year I have experienced fatigue, which I had written off to age.I have also had joint pain in my knee since the beginning of the year. An x-ray showed the knee to be in good condition, but the pain does not respond to treatment. It was the hair loss that compelled me to search online, and I am totally shocked to learn that Prolia is denosumab which is a chemotherapy administered to cancer patients. This is totally shocking to me, and as a breast cancer survivor who experienced hair loss, I am depressed to be experiencing that again. Between the two specialists I consulted before starting treatment with Prolia and all of the materials I reviewed, both online and those given to me at their offices, there was not a word about Prolia being a chemo drug. Also, it is not mentioned in the television ad for Amgen. My last bone density done in May showed an increase in the hip bone, but I had experienced a significant loss in the spine in the last year in spite of being on the drug. Between the knee pain and the fatigue, I haven't been exercising as much. I am thinking I would be better off dropping the Prolia and engaging in a focused exercise program instead.

Yes, I lost a lot of hair and all of my top teeth. Never will take this horrible drug again. Also had my stomach go up into
My esophagus two weeks after my one and only Prolia injection. I could have died and had to have surgery.

I have nothing positive to say. My immune system suffered and my hair still hardly grows. My jaw is popping loudly now. I had 2 shots, the last in November 2014. I'll just do nothing and let nature take it's course.

I am so sorry for all of your troubles. I only had one shot but had the hair loss... I have not had a shot for 4 months but still deal with the hair issue. I went to a dermatologist who told me it was dermatitis of my scalp which made sense as Prolia can cause rashes. I use TSal shampoo and take biotin daily. It is an ongoing battle and my hair is really thin. I am not losing hair as rapidly as before, but still shed quite a bit. Hope things get better for you as you distance yourself from the drug.

Re: Marilyn (# 335) Expand Referenced Message

Vertigo had been a very big issue for me as well. I had to stop getting my hair washed at the beauty parlor as I couldn't stand up after the shampoo. All of those things I also had at one time or another while getting the Prolia shots but I never linked where the problem had came from. I am still messed up with aching bones and hair fall out like a dog. I will never, ever take any treatment a doctor recommends again without checking it out.

Don't feel badly..vitamins surely didn't hurt and may have helped with some other problem. I did not take my second shot. Stil losing hair but not as much. We all try whatever we can to deal with the consequences of Prolia

Prolia gave me a bony tumor in my eye socket. Two years later my rheumy who is involved in research told me Prolia is being investigated for causing many, many bony growths under the tongue. It's only a matter of time before it's recalled. Be careful.

Re: Marilyn (# 355) Expand Referenced Message

My doctor also stated that none of his patients had ever experienced any problems with Prolia. When I reported the hair shedding that began two weeks after the shot, I was told it was not Prolia and porbably was something else Prolia was THE ONLY DIFFERENT THING IN MY BODY. Sometimes 2 + 2 actually do equal 4. It is easy to say no one has side effects when all of the reported side effects are casually dismissed.

I only had 2 shots the last exactly 4 years ago. I think Xgeva is the cancer drug you mention. My hair seems to be growing a bit now, but it's still not normal. I also think it caused my immune system to go down and in Jan. 2015 I had a bad virus which ultimately led to significant hearing loss with Tinnitus. I had the flu shot that season...which we know is no guarantee. I've told friends not to consider Prolia.

I began having hair loss with the first shot of Prolia and back pain, and many of the other side effects of this drug. My hair continues to fall out. and I have tried a lot of different hair loss products, and none seem to help. For me Prolia has been a nightmare for me and I will never take another shot. A horrible drug. Hope this helps others to not suffer like I have from this horrible drug.
