New Subutex Laws (Page 11) (Top voted first)

Updated

I went to see my doctor this week and he told me that the FDA and the DEA had passed a new law for prescribing Subutex. As of July 1st 2015 Subutex can only be given to pregnant woman or to someone with documentation saying they can't take Suboxone. If you don't have that you will be put on Suboxone.

I live in Georgia and I have a subscription for Subutex. My doctor never mentioned the fact the there was any law against prescribing it.

Hi Michael,

Yesterday I was on the verge of relapsing after 9mos clean from opiates. By Gods grace found an amazing woman who specializes in hormone therapy and also bupe! Turns out her brother and former business partner is in prison over opiates. Leading her to help those of us with that struggle. However due to suboxone cost and the strip giving me a bad headache she prescribed Subutex, which was 62.00 for 90 8mg. I'm nervous to take the first dose. What will I need to expect?

Dahma, there are no laws against prescribing Subutex in Georgia or any other state. BUT, your dr has to write a diagnosis on the prescription and if it is to treat drug addiction, your dr has to have special certification in order to prescribe it. In some states, a patient must fall within certain guidelines in order to be prescribed Subutex instead of Suboxone. If your dr doesn't not have the needed documentation that you meet this criteria, that may be the problem.

You can take it right now...it's not going to do a thing but help you. I promise...no precipitated withdraws at all! I remember being right where you are, so worried... But as long as you're not taking suboxone and abusing it...you will be fine!!!!

I also wanted to tell you, follow your doctor's orders and no need to take more then you should because it won't make a difference. Also, when you do start your treatment, do not take other opiates because you will not feel them not will they help because the subutex over rides them. The subutex saved my life...The ole saying, less is more...same with subutex! No need to over do it!
Good luck and don't screw it up...doctors aren't messing around with this Medicine. Its a true blessing.

CROATIAN CHAD: Are you physically strung out on the pain pills? I assume so since you are using subutex. If so, please hear me clearly, YOU NEED TO WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE IN PRETTY SERIOUS WITHDRAWALS BEFORE YOU TAKE THAT BUPE OR YOU WILL REGRET IT. Sorry to yell, but I really need to relay this to you. I had NEVER gone through something like that before. Took my subutex too soon after opiates and I was in HELL. Climbing the walls....the hubbs had to keep shoving Trazodone down my throat until I finally passed out. Just a warning son, DON'T PLAY WITH THOSE SUBS....... again I apologize, but let MY hell be your warning. BE IN THOSE WITHDRAWALS PRETTY STRONG.

Kkh...I know I'm not strung out! I have been taking subutex for over a year now and at times I have run out and took PK's so I wouldn't have withdraws...and then got my script filled and started taking subutex right after! You DO NOT have withdraws if you take subutex after or before pk's! Call your pharmacy, ask him if you can start subutex right away...Yes you can!

Ya, suboxon is not something I take and all I know about it is don't take when taking or needing pk's...Sorry, didn't mean to sound rude ..I like you! Lol
But I only took a pk' once or twice when out of subs...BUT never again have I abused them..thank goodness!

KKh... Actually no I've been abstinent 9mos. However lately I felt my old pre set up rituals like faking kidney pain ever so often to build up to my "performance" Kidney stones started this addiction 5 years ago. I'm working out everyday, my relationships with my wife, daughters (as they are lip syncing Taylor swift across the room lol) my life has went from full blown pill addict, to prison, (for prescription drug fraud) got released two weeks ago also. I promised to be honest when I came home and told my family..."it's getting too much, the cravings" so I went to my psychiatrist and he was proud of me surprisingly enough and put me in 8mg Subutex twice daily as preventive. I know myself a few more days of this I would've lied to the hospital or gotten opiates. Even with all the great things I have going on. God is good and I'm at a point where I'd rather be on sub, then commuting fraud eventually to get my fix. For now I can focus on a foundation, then when the time is right. Some may not agree with and I ask to please not dog me out. I've tried and failed several times, I'm asking for help and got it. And would like to have some of your backs as well. Because if u need me, I'm there...

Mary thank u, please read my posts to KKh. I'm looking to be part of a support system here. I'm using subs as preventive actually. I'm not detoxing but was about to relapse so my psychiatrist was actually happy I told him and put me on 8mg Subutex twice daily. Let me tell ya though I took half today, phewwwww lol

Is it normal for the Subutex to make me feel pretty impaired, almost nod?

CROATIANCHAD: I would think you are most likely on too much. If you are high as hell and nodding out, that's just substituting one high for another. Especially since you are not coming off of an opioid and are just using it as a preventative. And trust me, you are going to get strung out on that just like any other opioid. I would go down to 4 in the am and 4 in the pm. I'm pretty sure it will be enough to help you, yet you won't get this huge habit going. Unless you are TRYING to feel high. I know a couple people that had serious opiate habits that are on 16 mgs. That's a pretty decent amount of bupe. You need to do what is right for you, but my opinion? I would use less. Good luck to you.

MARY: I am wondering what you are calling "pain killers", because it is a documented fact that taking buprenorphine too soon after taking opioids is a recipe for being in precipitated withdrawals. I am not telling you this because I read it in a book or something, I am telling you this because it happened to me, and because my addiction specialist says it's true. And because I was pre-med and I study these things. Maybe what you are calling "pain killers" are not opioids, or maybe you are on something "short acting" and the "opiate" is out of you in a couple hours. But yes, bupe too soon after taking opioids can and will throw you into precipitated withdrawals. I don't give a damn what your pharmacist says. I was told the same thing by mine, that I could take the subutex 4 hours after opiates. And I was subsequently thrown into the worst withdrawals I have ever had.

BL: You are wrong. Suboxone and Subutex actually DO have the same "active ingredients". They are both forms of buprenorphine. The only reason any Naloxone is in there is to keep people from taking the Subutex intravenously. Go ahead....take some opiates, a good amount, and then 20 minutes later, take some Subutex. I dare ya. You will wish you had listened to me, trust me.

MARY: First of all, calm down. You are dispensing bad advice based solely on your personal experience after taking one "pain killer". I am not. I am basing it not only on my experience as an active opiate patient (at least I was when I went through precipitated withdrawals), but on what all reputable literature regarding buprenorphine says, and what two different addiction specialists say (one of whom is the addiction specialist for the Denver Nuggets NBA team). Just because it didn't happen to you, doesn't mean it can't possible happen to someone else.

My "strung out" comment was to Croatian Chad, not you. So maybe that's why you didn't go into precipitated withdrawals when taking Suboxone not that long after taking the "pain killers". The fact that you didn't have much of it in your system since you don't take them regularly, the fact that you had to go and fill a prescription, which takes time, the dose of bupe you are on, the dose of "pain killer" you took....all of those factors could be why you were ok. Consider yourself lucky. You want to prove me wrong? Take two or three of those opioids, then take some Bupe 20 minutes after. You will wish you hadn't. You want to go head to head with me on this? I am a 30 plus year addict, have taken bupe since almost the day the FDA approved the damn stuff, I am a scientist, I was pre-med, I prescribe to 4 different medical journals.....shall I explain the binding affinity for opiate/opioid agonists versus antagonists? Shall I explain why the Naloxone in or NOT in the meds really doesn't have much to do with whether bupe will send you into precips? And I'm not saying all this to be arrogant, I'm saying it because it is a FACT. Actually, I'm glad you never went through precip w/ds. Good for you, because they are hell. But trust me, you got lucky.

What I did was tell my DR that before moving back from college to KC I was put on Suboxone and got terrible nausea and headaches. She was hesitant but said frankly if ur lying is rather I be doing this than illicit drugs. But Subutex is way cheaper. Helps when ur having a rough day with cravings.
