My Doctor Will Not Up Prescription Number
UpdatedI have depression, anxiety, social anxiety and extremely bad panic attacks. I have been on 90 1mg xanax A month for 15 years. I have tried pretty much every depression/anti-anxiety meds there are and none of them have helped expept the
Xanax. This may sound strange and I'm not just saying this to get more Xanax! The xanax to me works for my anxiety, panic attacks (espicially) and oddly for depression. I run out at least one week before my script can be filled and when I run out I will stay in bed for days, never leave the house unless I have to. I don't know how to explain this to him without him thinking that I just want more meds for different reasons. Please let me know what I can do?

Have you tried talking to your doctor about it, at all, yet?
I mean you really can't know how they are going to react, if you never broach the subject. It is completely normal for your body to get used to any given dosage of a medication, if you have been taking it for a long period of time and your doctor should know this.

Honestly, having had them work for you for so long is quite amazing and it really isn't surprising that they are starting to reach their limits.
This is a epidemic! I'm tired of reading this failure in the medical groups! I've been on xanex over ten years after suffering a tragic loss. Its so hard to explain yes but we have to do something about it! Please contact! Its bs already I need answers and I'm not stopping until this is more public and people know wth we hv to live with I have 3 grown children I cnt even enjoy my time with them without the concern of xanex. Omg!
Xanax takes your mind over, no doubt about it. In 2011 my Doctor who saved me from withdrawal death in an ER doubled my pill strength. For each bottle of 100 bars I only used 50. After 3 years I find myself with 20 extra bottles. I also take less due to a head injury 1.5 years ago. While my head is cloudy from alprazolam use and the trauma I have gone through, I no longer worry about having enough, or being cut off or losing my Doctor. Just the thought of running out causes anxiety!
Believe it or not, you can get over the social anxiety. Being anxious does, at times, cause depression. First, being nervous takes a lot of energy. When the anxiety is gone, you have that energy back. You will build up a tolerance to Xanax, needing more and more to get the same effect. Perhaps a good way to start is to see a Psychologist, then ask him to refer you to a Psychiatrist. They will talk this way. Be honest. I know you are scared, but you can overcome this. Keep in mind that panic attacks can't kill you, even if it feels like it. I had a social phobia that crippled me for years, until I found a simple way to get rid of it. You can too. Ask the psychologist about using imagery.
It is with great sadness that I read the posts here. And you are so right, its an epidemic! If I had it in my power, these dangerous and addictive drugs would be STOPPED from ever being made. I went through absolute HELL coming off Benzos and then Stillnox. There is a reason these drugs should NOT be used for more than a couple of days. But nobody, including your doctor or pharmacist will tell you this when they dish out the script and hand over, month after month, these meds to you over the counter. Eventually your mind, body and soul are addicted and the ever increasing need for more pills gets you to the point where you are going to die. Trust me.....DIE!
The funny part though is death normally occurs after a prolonged withdrawal. So they work when you need them and when you stop they can cause Death. Go figure?
Eddy, these drugs are pure evil. I belong to a support group, and you have to hear the stories of our members. Most of them trying to come off, others giving up.....just to try again later. It's a fight for your life. Many people realize that they cannot, and do not want to, continue taking this drug for the rest of their lives as it ruins your quality of life, and the side effects of prolonged use is horrific. The "trick" coming off is to do a slow taper and lost of support from friends and family (who sadly dont understand most of the time) and seeing a therapist. I am blessed to have come off both Benzos and Stillnox (15 x 10mg tablet per DAY) by the grace of God, blood, sweat and tears. If you are older than 65 you might as well stay on it, but if you are younger and want your life back, you will be better off to stop taking the drugs. Today I am 2 months clean from Stillnox.....and still suffering with withdrawals, but I refuse to take mind altering drugs again. There are herbal supplements that I take now for my anxiety, and only remain on an antidepressant. I wish you, and everyone taking Xanax, Klonopin etc all the best and I pray that you will also one day be free from a drug that needs constant dose increases with major health problems later on.
after a while you won't feel the effects of Xanax and then you take a few extra and Drs know that I know that done it my self, you could ask for 2mg and see what he says but the same cycle will eventually happen with the 2 MG good luck no matter how hard it is try and stay on what he prescribed cuz after 10 yrs I did what you did ask sometimes just 5 days early, but I have a rod and pins, and screw in my back from a bad surgery and it helped with my pain meds but he finally dropped me, and now I need to find a doctor who will give me what he did and I am terrified, good luck
You do need to tell your Dr. you are struggling and see what he says, advises, suggests or maybe perscribes first. BUT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES TELL HIM U'VE BEEN TAKING MORE THAN PERSCRIBED OR EVEN MENTION THAT MAYBE MORE WOULD HELP. So many people have made this mistake, myself included. They automatically put in your chart 'High risk for abuse' or immediately peg u as an addict then and there. If that happens they will issue you one last month prescription. No matter how many years you've been with your doctor.
But eventually, and sooner rather than later you really need to consider getting off benzodiazepines completely. But only done by a well-planned slow taper, and when you're Completely ready too start that journey Then you mention to your doctor your plan. I was on xanax for almost eight years and the end of the taper took Alot of hard work, perseverance, Struggle and sheer will power to just not say f*** it but I made it. EVERYONE, even normies, have anxiety to a certain degree, small yes. BUT If they can do it then you can too. JUST use all that Struggle and Pain uve crawled through as your weapon to fight to live as who you are. Try New techniques, take new avenues. Show yourself you can handle this life with blind perseverance. Once I got through my taper and learned to use my will power to control my anxiety and bi-polar I started seeing the world, ACTUALLY SEEING, LIVING, EXPERIENCING LIFE. Depression was the most difficult part of me to accept. But i forgot, I forgot how beautiful life is when I let my mental challenges take over my life. And yes there is the occasional bad day, but I wouldn't trade the life I LIVE now for Anything. I hope you all the best.
Dear momzor
that was great and so true I am proud of you for being clean 2 months it is really hard and yes you will increase your own self to feel the way you did at first, and that's were the trouble starts then the Dr wont re-fill because its to early and he does not have to, because he will say if you took them the way I prescribed them you would not be out, which is true. been there many times, you will need to get another RX somehow and give them to a trusting friend who will only give them to you as prescribed, or if your cutting off let them cut you. You will never be able to do it yourself you will need help from family or a true friend good luck
"You will never be able to do it yourself"
No that is not true. It can be done although it is very hard and takes time. My downfall was when I asked for more, or to change to another Benzo. Wow these things can take you life away, Somehow my next doctor doubled my monthly amount, and after 4 years I have an extra 2-3 year supply. I need to get off these things!
Oh, my psychiatrist had me on that terrible dose of Zolpidem. After I "discovered" that you cannot take Benzos and just stop taking them and went cold turkey off it, I refused to ever take another one. But then the idiot GP who had prescribed as many Alprazolam is I wanted didn't want to know of my withdrawals and told me to go to rehab, which I could not afford. He then sent me to a bigger idiot than himself and so the Stillnox addiction started. I lost my life so to speak. And it was MY decision to stop taking it and had to face withdrawals all over again. But, I made it!! I now take a herbal sleeping aid and green tea extract to calm me when I feel anxious. As T says....we have our lives back!! Staying on Benzos (or even starting to take them) is not an option anymore. Once you have suffered like I have (and so many other people out there), living from pill to pill, you NEED to get your life back. Face your fear and concerns. I dont call it "worry" anymore....only concerns. Having my mind back, I can actually talk to myself and have so much more control over my thoughts and actions. Something that is completely lost when you are on a Benzo!!
Wow extra bottles lucky you. I'm seeing my Dr early to explain this. I have severe PTSD and without xanax I can't leave my house, but it wears off so I am asking about the XR.
Talk to your Dr! That's the entire key...tell him you need a small increase...if you've been taking it for that long, you've had to build up a degree of tolerance, and if he's a good, caring physician, he should understand.
Please, anybody that reads this: PLEASE, NEVER JUST STOP ABRUPTLY. BY THE THIRD DAY YOU'LL BE IN THE HOSPITAL SUFFERING FROM A SEIZURE. Maybe try putting a few a month aside for when you really need it. By the time the end of the month comes you probably forgot you've hidden them lol. Been on these for years now, after experimenting with every other drug known to man. like I'm a f***ing lab rat. Took ten years of head meds that did jack s*** for me. Now, thank God, I'm good with my combo of meds. Yeah my combo is all controlled substances. That's what works, that's what it takes. Don't ever let a Dr. tell you how you feel, if they do they aren't that well of a Dr. I can tell my docs anything, that's a good Dr.
