My Doc Will Not Refill My Xanax Im Feeling Sick (Page 4)

I was prescribed Prozac & Xanax 10 years ago by my psychiatrist for depression & severe panic attacks. He started me on 1mg 3 times a day. Around Dec 2005 he increased my daily dose to 1 mg - 4 times a day. I have been a patient of his now for 10 years where I see him every 3 months. Through the years, there has been a few times were I had to call to reschedule my appointment and a couple of times he had to do the same. He would call in my meds for the amount I would need to get me through to my next appointment. This month I had an appointment for May 27th I called to reschedule due to transportation. I do not drive now and my ride canceled on me. so, I rescheduled my app. for June 17th I then requested my meds be called in until my appointment, a 3 week supply. She said she would call me back when it was called in later that day. Not hearing anything I called back the next day to find out what was going on. I was told my doctor feels uncomfortable due to liability reasons to re-fill my medication, until I see him again in June. I asked her what about the liability to take me off medication I have been taking for 10 years? She told me to go to my primary physician to get my meds. I told her my primary care doctor will not prescribe me those medications without my medical records from this office and I just signed a medical release form a few days ago at my first appointment with this new primary doctor, so she told me to go to an urgent care if my symptoms became to uncomfortable for me to deal with!! I had enough xanax to last me until today. I took my last xanax this morning and I am already starting to feel sick, my head feels cloudy, I feel like I'm getting the flu. My heart is racing, I'm feel really anxious & closed in. Has anyone out there gone off xanax cold turkey what more should I expect? I don't understand how a doctor can prescribe medication like this for 10 years and just make you stop so suddenly it doesn't seem fair. I have lost trust in my doctor now and I don't think I can continue to be his patient anymore. I am scared and I don't know who to turn too.

please i need urgent answer, i was in the hospital or a back surgery an my brother die when i was still there....they start giving me xanax i didnt ask for this, was a bottle refill when i left to go home .25 with generic name on, i stop taking them when i was finish the bottle was no refill, i dint know until today i call the doctor who prescribed it was xanax an i call because im having all this simptoms i feel like im dying all mention on the comments above, when i will feel better, has been a week since i stop, an im no better, i took it only or a month...why is so bad!

You didn't mention how much you take? While this sounds like mild withdrawal symptoms, I would think it is just the rebound anxiety from the drug along with your recent family problems. You need to see a new doctor who can issue you some more, or tough it out and NEVER take one again. If you get very sick at any point go to the ER at once!

Screw this bulls***. Doctors under government control. This is how this s*** ends up out in the streets. I don't need some stupid shrink to tell me what they think I need after talking to me for ten minutes. Biggest scam of all time. Unfortunately finding it off the street is your best bet.

F*** 'Drug Seeker' F*** 'label'. Try to label me as something. I don't need to be protected from myself. I need to be protected from unreliable doctors who can't keep a f***ing medication going without some bulls*** DEA piss in a cup for no f***ing reason other than they don't like my insurance. F*** the F***ING system. Amen.

I have serious anxiety disorder and have been seeing my psychiatrist for over 8 months now. He's prescribed me xanax .5 mgs twice daily for that amount of time. And 40 mgs of Prozac daily. I informed him of the fact that I was looking for a new job and that my schedule would likely change so I didn't know when to schedule my next appt. we scheduled it for a month later on a Monday. I ended up getting a job the Friday before and called him that day to let him know I needed to reschedule the appt. well I couldn't get a hold of anyone in the office, nor did they bother to return my phone call. I finally got him to give me a call on Monday afternoon. Which was two days before I would need a refill. He was extremely rude to me, told me I was wasting his time for having to take time away from his day for me to ask for a refill. After the conversation was over I tried to ask them to fit me in since he was adamant about not refilling it until I saw him. My only available day was a Thursday because that's my only day off. He told me he didn't have any openings for a Thursday for two months and so he gave in and refilled my prescription. After I went to pick it up I realized it was written for a two week supply. I called him back and told him (again) that my insurance only fills one prescription of Xanax a month. Whether it's one pill or 60 pills. One refill a month. If I would be noticed I wouldn't have picked it up. I was upset with the way he treated me but I knew I couldn't just stop taking it because as he warned me, it could cause seizures. So after again trying to get him to squeeze me in since he insisted on seeing me monthly even though I've been on the same steady dose for over 8 months he told me he had no openings for at least two months. I had to have him change the dosage in order for my insurance to refill it. He then wrote a month supply after another extremely rude and condescending conversation with him. Well, I took them sparingly. A month and a half goes by. I'm almost out and he refuses to do anything about it because he just can't fit me into his schedule. A few days go by after going off them Uninvoluntarily feeling awful and crazy moody and sickly. On day three, within not even give minutes of walking in the door home from work, I have an intense seizure and wake up in the ambulance with no idea what's going on. The seizure was so severe I could barely move for days. I haven't felt the same since and I somehow sprained my jaw and can barely open it. Not only that but my license was and still is revoked until they're done with even more expensive time consuming brain scans and other tests. For a few days I was like if Xanax is that dangerous I want nothing to do with it. Since I've been off it however my anxiety is through the roof. I've blacked out a few times from over compensating on oxygen inhalation because it felt like I wasn't getting enough air and suffocating. It's affected my work and my life and my mood and health and finances and sleeping ability. So I finally call his office today and I'm like, look. This is serious. I've been hospitalized from a severe seizure and have blacked out several times. They sounded scared and said they'd squeeze me in on Thursday. I said perfect, but I need him to fill the prescription before then because I can't handle feeling like I'm suffocating for one more day. So the prescription is called into the pharmacy. I go to pick it up and the pharmacist tells me that he's filled it for 5 pills. He knows I only get ONE fill a month! So what does he expect, start me on it again and then I have no choice but to go off it because I'll run out and potentially have another seizure. I did not pick up the prescription. I'm sitting here in bed trying to catch my breath and left him a nice voicemail. I feel like that is unlawful and negligent. If he's effected my health and safety, who else is he hurting!? What do I do? Should I report him?

Jennifer, I'm not sure you should report him. He's done a lot more than most other doctors would do as it is. Doctors are NOT accommodating when it comes to our needs, we have to meet THEM where THEY are. And something VERY important here - do NOT go into withdrawals over 5 pills! Xanax is CHEAP!!! I can buy 90 1 mg xanax for about $15-20! Unless you are flat broke, I would just pay for it out of pocket, then let insurance pick up the next, larger script. If you keep pushing your doctor, he's going to be wanting to get rid of you as a patient real quick & in a hurry, if he doesn't already. But PLEASE - just go buy those 5 pills out of pocket so you won't withdraw! It's not worth it just for your own comfort and well-being for now. I hope I've helped :) And good luck working this out the way it needs to be!

Thank you for your response. I finally got in touch with him today. The thing is- I had scheduled an appt with him and while we were setting it up I told him I was in the process of getting a new job and don't know my hours yet so I may have to reschedule. He was perfectly fine with that. After I learned my schedule I called to set up an appt with him and he said he was booked out for at least a month and a half then he wouldn't refill my script again. He said if I needed to reschedule that he'd fit me in due to the circumstances of my new job. Anyway, I finally talk to him today, told him about my seizure and what does he say in response? "Please, I highly doubt that...I don't believe you." And so on and so on. I am just disappointed in the way he's handled this whole situation. Needless to say he will no longer be my psychiatrist. I'm still going to report him to my insurance company who he's contracted with. He's very rude as a psychiatrist anyway. He's constantly bringing up how I'm young and so beautiful so it probably effects relationships such as friends and colleagues etc. crossed the line one too many times.

I don't blame you then! I knew he sounded like a naysayer, but he really is! Some are just difficult! Good luck with that, and hope you find a much better psychiatrist next time!

Honestly although withdrawing from Xanax can kill you Char I would not worry about any problems with the dose you are taking. I would continue to take half a .25 for a few weeks. You should be fine. This advice does NOT apply for higher doses. Good luck!

I'm taking 2 mg a day for a 3 yr period. .I want to stop taking them..now I've developed ringing of the ears all of a sudden, and I have anxiety stress from running my business. I don't want to be dependent on these no more. I have to resort to getting them off my friends cause no doctor will help me even though I'm trying to explain I want to taper off..so I'm going to taper myself since dam doctor won't help..he thinks I just want the pills but in reality I want off and seek help. Sad but I no people abuse them but I truly want off these things and it's so hard.

Be very careful. Stopping Xanax can cause severe gran mal seizures. Don't drive. It can take quite awhile for this to get out of your system. This happened to me, and I did end up with gran mal seizures and after 20 years still have an occasional petit mal seizure. If this doctor really stopped your Xamax abruptly, I would definately seek a lawyer. You'll be ok without it though. Just try and relax. Let God have your problems.

I am sorry to hear about what is happening to you, but as the other person on the blog wrote, if you can make it to you pharmacy then yu can go see him and cancelling isn't good at all you need to call them back cuz you will for sire have a seizure I am medical and it happened to me you need to remind them that you will have a seizure I had one in the middle of Fred Meyer and almost died that is illegal what he is doing, but you cant cancel all the time take a bus what ever. I would get help soon because I don't want to scare you but it is serious

I would without hesitation, tell this doctor to go straight to hell. Tell him that what he is saying is NOT ACCEPTABLE to you. I would report him immediately. For God's sake, don't let this man play a "God" role. No doctor will ever push me around again. Take this seriously. What you want is a good thing. Take your control back. If nothing else, find out who his insurance carrier is, and tell them.

I keep them around still and take 1.5 to 2 mg daily. .I'm trying to do this myself since doctor won't help..As long as I taper correctly and keep my faith I no I can beat this! Thanks for supporting

mj that might be all well and good, but don't you play doctor either. You can't categorize people. You don't know this person, and don't know anything about their problems. Xanax is not OK either.

No doctor I know would prescribe me Xanax at all. But I think you are in great medical danger. I know because the drug upon which I'm dependent is Lyrica (pregabalin) and I recently endured 8 days of horrific and agonizing withdrawal because I ran out too soon; my dosage, the same for 5 years, was reduced and it is difficult to keep to the new lower dosage. So, though I feel for you, I am really surprised anyone would prescribe such a powerfully addictive Benzo for you for 10 years.

My advice: GO TO THE HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY; you have a dangerous medical emergency: YOU ARE GOING INTO WITHDRAWAL! You need immediate medical attention, because withdrawing from Benzos is extremely dangerous!!! GOOD LUCK! Go get help.

Maybe the DEA needs to examine that doctor's behavior toward you, too. You trusted him and he got you hooked. It would be like if my Rheumatologist suddenly decided to cut off my Lyrica; I think I might actually die because the withdrawal is torture and it is very dangerous, like Benzo withdrawal. PLEASE GET HELP. I hope it turns out okay.

I just got fired from my Dr after 9 yrs and I have been on klonipin 1 mg 2 x's a day, he always said to call 3 days early for refill incase pharmacy is out, yet I get one more after this one more how on earth do you find a Dr who will give you this ? I have already had two grand-mal seizures from not having them because Dr went out of town and no on call dr, I am now terrified, it is very dangerous and last time they put me in the hospital and a ER doc wheened me off with a different benzo, I should of just stayed off, he fired me foe calling 4 days early and I am not on a drug contract, I feel for all of you I am a medical assistant until I had a botched back surgery and he has been so good treating me with pain, now I think he is under stress because of the new FDA regulations he has to buy computers for each room and all his staff he hired are not certified medical and now he has to send them back to get certified and hire new medical people, but it isn't my fault, I am not the FDA I didn't do this to him, but the day I came in was a bad day, and I got the wrath of my DR. good luck as I will need it too.
