My Doc Will Not Refill My Xanax Im Feeling Sick (Page 3)

I was prescribed Prozac & Xanax 10 years ago by my psychiatrist for depression & severe panic attacks. He started me on 1mg 3 times a day. Around Dec 2005 he increased my daily dose to 1 mg - 4 times a day. I have been a patient of his now for 10 years where I see him every 3 months. Through the years, there has been a few times were I had to call to reschedule my appointment and a couple of times he had to do the same. He would call in my meds for the amount I would need to get me through to my next appointment. This month I had an appointment for May 27th I called to reschedule due to transportation. I do not drive now and my ride canceled on me. so, I rescheduled my app. for June 17th I then requested my meds be called in until my appointment, a 3 week supply. She said she would call me back when it was called in later that day. Not hearing anything I called back the next day to find out what was going on. I was told my doctor feels uncomfortable due to liability reasons to re-fill my medication, until I see him again in June. I asked her what about the liability to take me off medication I have been taking for 10 years? She told me to go to my primary physician to get my meds. I told her my primary care doctor will not prescribe me those medications without my medical records from this office and I just signed a medical release form a few days ago at my first appointment with this new primary doctor, so she told me to go to an urgent care if my symptoms became to uncomfortable for me to deal with!! I had enough xanax to last me until today. I took my last xanax this morning and I am already starting to feel sick, my head feels cloudy, I feel like I'm getting the flu. My heart is racing, I'm feel really anxious & closed in. Has anyone out there gone off xanax cold turkey what more should I expect? I don't understand how a doctor can prescribe medication like this for 10 years and just make you stop so suddenly it doesn't seem fair. I have lost trust in my doctor now and I don't think I can continue to be his patient anymore. I am scared and I don't know who to turn too.
Re: w John (# 609)
when it comes to benzo, it's very hard, the withdrawals are not like an opioid withdrawal. I know first hand. it can take months to years with horrid symptoms.
Re: Maria (# 611)
You need to taper very very very slowly. Yes its horrible the withdrawals, your body is dependent on them, as mine were. Once we are on them, we are hostages to them. Its the hardest medication to get off of. And most of the medical community does not recognize Benzo withdrawals, they can last for months to yrs.
Re: Verwon (# 3)
Going off xanax after being on it for 10 yrs makes one feel very ill. Dr certainly does not care about their patient! If i forget my AM med by lunchtime i am terribly nauseated and dizzy. Unless you know how this feels your advice does not help anyone.
No medication should be stopped cold turkey. There are so many side effects to doing this. I would find out who to report your Doctor to probably the AMA. American medical association. This is very serious especially this medication. If this is really what happened I would go to the hospital tell them what happened and you need help. You will have withdrawals. Hope you get an answer
Re: Verwon (# 3)
Verwon, you will find that if you state your mind or, God forbid, the truth, you will be vilified. Withdrawal is hell. However, sometimes you will just have to put up with some aggravation to get off a substance you have taken for years. Doctors need to be responsible and do what is proper and not what they “feel”. The unasked and unanswered questions in my mind is, How many times did this person reschedule their appointment? How many times did they call the Doctors Office with a story to get their prescription refilled early? What was their reaction to a refusal to refill? These issues are becoming really real and the correct answers are sometimes clouded in a “he said, she said” scenario.
Oh dear, you are in withdrawals. Please go and get help. My doctor did the same thing as uping my dose. That meant we hit tolerance, and in my situation, the medication was causing more anxiety... He did not see it was causing the issue and kept up dosing me until I was in bed like a zombie all day plus trying to clam my anxiety!! Some people go to the ER and get enough to get by. That is what I have read, I am not a doctor, so I am not saying to do it. You may need more psychotherapy than medication therapy, most of us do.
Re: RJ (# 603)
It's a horrible pill, I was on it, I got cold turkey'd off of it, I didn't have seizures but, I did have 18 months worth of unrecognizable, indescribable, unimaginable withdrawals. So did many others.
You are going through withdrawals, Trust me, please, if you can find another way to deal with your anxiety etc... do it, Xanax, and all the benzos are poison!
Re: marlee (# 4)
Anytime you are on a drug or drugs that cause withdrawal. You should ween your self off the drug slowly and tell the doctor.
Re: lisa1947 (# 1)
It's very possible that her doctor had no idea she was out of her meds. The person who answers the phone at the office may not have told the doctor she was going to be out of meds. She is called the gatekeeper. Same thing happened to me when I went to my doctor. I live an hour and a half from my doctor. When I went. I saw I forgot my little wallet that holds my credit and debit cards. I tried to write a check. And they dont take checks. They refused to let me see him and made me an appt for the next week. When i ran out and had a seizer. He was upset and had no idea they turned me away. When i went in the next time all of the front office employees were new.

I hate that for you that we either have to have a seizure or die from not having it. If it's such an awful drug why did you and I get prescribed it? I went yo my specialist doctor after I had my seizure and knew ai was I was just waiting and wondering when it was gonna happen but my family ot friends didn't care. Until I had to be rushed to the hospital and almost died. My doctor said what was I suppose to do, I'm like would you rather see me dead than giving me 5 more Xanax to get me thru thev2 days when my new order arrived the day after my siezure SMH.
Thank you I told everyone since I been on it since 2005 along with other meds ??I never used to take an aspirin, and now this why in life would anyone want anyone to die from withdrawals over 1.98 pill?

Re: no name (# 2)
I take it your not a doctor. The advice you gave to the OP is irresponsible and extremely dangerous. She can have life threatening seizures. I ran out of my xanax for a few days. On the 4th day I woke up on the floor. I had a seizure. When I went to my doctor the following day, I told him what happened and I decided I wanted off the xanax and we decided to put me in klonopin. That was in Oct and I dont feel any difference, im glad I changed medications and I dont want to take Xanax again. Please dont give advice unless you're a doctor. I'm sure your intentions are good, but they aren't right. People going through benzo WD's can and have died.
Re: Anne (# 597)
They NEVER give patients alprazolam pre-op. They most commonly use midazolam (Versed) because it has an extremely short half life.
Re: RJ (# 592)
Even if you take the exact same medication no one should share medications. It's against the law for one. They did the right thing whether you think so or not. I'm sorry that happened to you. If you get your medicine by mail maybe you should make allowances in case it's late getting to you for whatever reason.
Re: Solid mike (# 594)
I don't take Xanax. I was just stating some facts. The medication has got uses. One they give it to patients that are going into surgery to relax them. It doesn't last as long as Valium so for this purpose it's very useful. It's also used in patients that have been through a serious trauma, whether psychological, physical or both. As I said it shouldn't be used for long term therapy.
Re: SayWhat (# 401)
Why do people come on this site and judge others? I think it's just nothing but pure bulls***.
Re: Solid mike (# 594)
Hello, I agree with you big time. Xanax should have been taken off the market years and years ago. I take klonopin and it is way safer than Xanax. Ativan is okay to take. Valium if you're careful is way better than Xanax. Xanax is a deadly drug. Have a great day.
Re: Anne (# 593)
Xanax should be off the market! Too many people think it’s the best remedy to feel better. Keep thinking that & U will become dependent on them & then all the sudden U will be addicted.
