My Doc Will Not Refill My Xanax Im Feeling Sick (Page 20) (Top voted first)

Updated

I was prescribed Prozac & Xanax 10 years ago by my psychiatrist for depression & severe panic attacks. He started me on 1mg 3 times a day. Around Dec 2005 he increased my daily dose to 1 mg - 4 times a day. I have been a patient of his now for 10 years where I see him every 3 months. Through the years, there has been a few times were I had to call to reschedule my appointment and a couple of times he had to do the same. He would call in my meds for the amount I would need to get me through to my next appointment. This month I had an appointment for May 27th I called to reschedule due to transportation. I do not drive now and my ride canceled on me. so, I rescheduled my app. for June 17th I then requested my meds be called in until my appointment, a 3 week supply. She said she would call me back when it was called in later that day. Not hearing anything I called back the next day to find out what was going on. I was told my doctor feels uncomfortable due to liability reasons to re-fill my medication, until I see him again in June. I asked her what about the liability to take me off medication I have been taking for 10 years? She told me to go to my primary physician to get my meds. I told her my primary care doctor will not prescribe me those medications without my medical records from this office and I just signed a medical release form a few days ago at my first appointment with this new primary doctor, so she told me to go to an urgent care if my symptoms became to uncomfortable for me to deal with!! I had enough xanax to last me until today. I took my last xanax this morning and I am already starting to feel sick, my head feels cloudy, I feel like I'm getting the flu. My heart is racing, I'm feel really anxious & closed in. Has anyone out there gone off xanax cold turkey what more should I expect? I don't understand how a doctor can prescribe medication like this for 10 years and just make you stop so suddenly it doesn't seem fair. I have lost trust in my doctor now and I don't think I can continue to be his patient anymore. I am scared and I don't know who to turn too.

If you misinterpreted my last post as intended for the OP, I apologize I should have referenced the post I was addressing in which there was a direct question regarding herbal remedies to alleviate w/d symptoms. However, a Benzo equivalent CAN be substituted for alprazolam, including any other benzodiazepine, most frequently lorazepam. Perhaps you thought the recommendation was to replace, but this was to accompany withdrawal, so, read it again. As suggested, it also states that consulting one's medical professional prior to implementing any drug- prescription or herbal- is recommended.

Yes, it's horrible. My doctor basically done the same thing. Watch that racing heart. I have gone into tachnychardia before, thus Xanax detox is only starting, your blood pressure could go onto the 200'sur pressure is already pretty high. Don't play around call 911 get urself to a hospital. I have lived with this demon for 30 :years. The anxiety will surely turn to fear. Get off here and go!!!!!

OK,but seriously don't hesitate. Does anybody have any clonidine? If so take one,it will ease your pressure in turn will ease the anxiety. Damn I feel ur pain. Been there so many times.

General information. I research many topics on a research site called PubMed. Although some research is not new, (I recently had a colleague scoff at results from the year 1993, totally inappropriate - If i can't trust the studies, then what can I trust?), but I was so deterred. One important study I came across was performed on a large group of people taking benzodiazepines - namely alprazolam - for panic, anxiety disorders, etc. This study showed that MOST people taking medication for these issues were not likely to abuse their medicine. Granted, none of us are recreational users, and as several people have pointed out, we were not the origin of prescription. To a degree, it is an outrage that the recent tide of the medical opinion toward taking all people off of this medication, is adversely affecting those that need it most. However, if you are a candidate for this latest attitude, try to take it with somewhat of a good nature. (Yes, it IS hard). I suggest this because the more your protest and argue, the more you will be accused of being an addict. Instead, ask your physician what they plan to replace this medication to avoid the worst of withdrawal effects - namely, seizures. if you are interested in stoping this medication, or you are experiencing problems with new prescriptions, ask your doctor what seizure medication they plan to use in light of this sudden withdrawal. Normally, the lower doses may not require this, but a dose of 4 mg or more will definitely require treatment to avoid the serious consequences of sudden withdrawal. another study I had read speaks of carbamazepine to replace alprazolam. This is an anticonvulsant and is very effective in avoiding seizures. However, it is not effective at stemming the other symptoms of withdrawal, including the nausea, shakiness, and irritability. For these symptoms, I have suggested looking into Valerian Root, and benadryl for sleep during the crucial first several days. As aways, consult your doctor for safety, and suggestions that they may offer to help during the withdrawal period.

Girl, you need to find a script fast! Cold turkey from xanax means seizures_ grand Mal seizures. Myself and others i know had them when in your situation. Also depends much on the dose you are taking. I ended up hospitalized for running out. Get help soon. Good luck

Your NP really shouldn't be prescribing that medicine in the first place. No one should ever experience a Cold Turkey Xanax withdrawal and I wonder why you mentioned you wouldn't be coming back? In any case you're not "safe" yet, be careful

I was prescribed Xanax by my oncologist in 2013 when I found out I had stage 2 cervical cancer. Started with 1 mg per day as needed for anxiety and stress related to my diagnosis. We gradually increased my dose to 3 1mil per day and I have become completely dependent/addicted I feel like I can't live without them. I've had to go through some difficult treatments, chemo radiation, surgery. After approximately 3 years of taking xanax my oncologist decides she can't prescribe me any more and to get my primary care or a mental health Dr to get more!! I didn't have any idea how extremely difficult it is to find any Dr willing to prescribe Xanax. I have thought long and hard about trying to sue my oncologist for mistreatment. I just don't understand why? if they work for me and she is the reason I am dependent wtf would she put me through this. My anxiety is definitely much worse than ever not knowing how I can get more. I was able to get a few klonopin to wean me off but that's not going well. I wished I would have never followed my so called doctors instructions by taking them in the first place. I can't go a day without them. I've tried and I feel sick and paranoid and crazy out of my mind it's not good! Just wanted to share if I can stop anyone else from becoming addicted to Xanax / benzos then it was worth my time.

Actually alprazolam is fast acting and withdrawal symptoms start to occur within 2 hours. Please become more educated before replying! Diaz exam is a long acting benzoyl and withdrawal from it doesn't occur til 20 plus hours.

I agree with you Susan. Everyone's body is different and every one reacts differently than others so u must accept that fact because guess what News Flash EDUCATE: u need to learn to know the true details as well cause you can not tell people that the med will be this or what ever it may be because I extremely get upset at the fact that well let me ask you are you a human in each of our bodies and and know our pain or how long one is on pain medication or even how they feel emotionally? Well until u know what I feel like and I would not wish that on you at all because I am not like that or my worst enemy, even so do not say this or that, maybe you should re quote it. EXAMPLE: I have experienced this so I know from experience and maybe you can read the stories of others.. EVERYONE, I HOPE AND PRAY FOR YOU ALL. MAY YOU GET THE CORRECT TREATMENT AND IGNORE IGNORANCE CAUSE YOU CAN NOT FIX OR CHANGE PEOPLE THAT ARE ATE UP WITH IT. AND I KNOW FROM MY OWN EXPERIENCE WITH THIS ITS A NIGHTMARE. WELL I THOUGHT IT WAS. TURNED OUT MORE PEOPLE ARE WORSE OFF THAN THE WAY I FEEL FOR YEARS (17). I'M 39 NOW. I'VE BEEN ON MEDICINE DUE TO JUVENILE ARTHRITIS, FIBROMYALGIA, chronic back and sciatic nerve DA. List goes on and on, well I know it is hard. I try to keep myself moving cause when I lay down I think about hurting and standing I do as well but laying is heck and as far as emotional well being, I know I wonder about me but I am not going to say it's a piece of cake. If you feel like you are in danger of severe panic attacks and blood pressure call 911 ASAP and as for your loved ones let them help you and just be there.

Busily, do u have a update on how u are doing? I am on my 17th day and the depression is horrible, I truly want to die. Can't eat or sleep just these awful thoughts going through my head. The NP cut all my scripts off when I told her I plan to change doctors. I am 65 and was on a pain management program for 8 years which included suboxone and clonazepam. I guess what I am saying is be prepared for this horrible depression. I think about going to emergency but I don't think there is anything they can do.

Scaredmom, I do feel your pain. As I sit here awake and think about all of us out here with chronic pain and how the laws have changed. It's all bulls***! I personally don't like our world today. Doctors taking it all away or cutting back. To say your changing doctors, so they use their so called authority to cut your medicine. Smh. Its hurts reading all this everyone is going through. I must say you were very polite on your reply. I'm waiting for my medicine to start helping. I'm not concentrating too well.

Barbara #347, Please, Don't think or accept thoughts that death is the answer. I too have depression, anxiety & OA along with chronic pain. Those are just a few of my ailments. Four years ago I developed a severe case of dependency/addiction to proscription opioid. The short version is, things got so bad that I went into rehab to get my life back. I have never touch opioids again. I still suffer from the depression and anxiety, but I am on xanax & Zoloft, which is helping. When those dark thoughts come. I work hard on reframing my thoughts. I try to focus on the good things in my life. I celebrate even my smallest achievement. To decrease my joint pain, I take Extra Strength Excedrin. I use moist heat, do deep tissue massages. I am planning on trying acupuncture & cupping. The mind is powerful & negative thinking all the time can be counterproductive. Extensive use of high dosages of opioid can enlarge your heart (cardiomegaly) Enlarge your spleen (spleenomegaly). Destroy your kidneys etc..etc..etc..

Barbara 347: I don't have depression, so remember not everyone responds the same. If I feel anxious, bad, etc. I remind myself of how proud I am to be off of the medication. However, I think it was a terrible decision by your NP. At least a month of medication is appropriate because the office can track your change by the request for medical records. So, I think that was worthy of complaining to the board of medicine about(usually a state agency). It is terrible that you feel depressed. Can you see a psychiatrist? If they think you need Xanax, they'll prescribe it, or something for the depression.

Paige: Get another doctor immediately. There is a push for quality of life, and it was a horrible decision by your medical professional.

Barbara said "I think about going to emergency but I don't think there is anything they can do."

I thought the same thing & found myself at the local last chance E.R. in my tiny town. They didn't let me out for a week as withdrawal can make you very sick, this they can see!

Eddy: thanks for sharing a positive experience. Medical personnel are not supposed to make you suffer, and if they do in life threatening circumstances, lodge a formal complaint.

@ Susan, I agree because when a person is stressed. It's a good idea to leave some lights on. Between the insurance setting stipulations you need. You guys have to come up with an alternative plan. Right now they are whining like children. Obamacare (ACA), have gotten insurance.

@Eddy, you are absolutely right. You have some crooked pharmacist who are willing to do a side hustle under the table for cash.
