Midrin Where Can I Get It (Page 7)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I have been taking Midrin for the past 10 years for migraines because I don't get any side effects from it and it works really well. Now all of a sudden the pharmacies in my area (3 of them) are saying that they can't get any or it is on backorders for the past 3 months. Do they still make it? I tried a different medication and it makes me really dissy so I really need to know how to get the Midrin. How can I get a presecription filled and where even in the mail would be ok.

Thank you so much for this information. I will ask my doctor at my next appt. and let everyone know what the outcome is. I have a local compounding pharmacy that I will try once I get what I need fromt the doctor.

Let me update this. When I said I "got some today" I meant I called the compounding pharmacy and was told no problem - here's the price. When I went to pick it up they said "We cant make Midrin". The second pharmacist at this pharmacy told me to tell my doc to not write "Midrin" on the prescription, but to make the prescription for Acetaminophen, Isomethaptene and Chloralhydrate. These are the ingrediants in Midrin. (Something about copy rights for the name Midrin.) The pharmacist said when it's written that way they can make it. I fogot to ask what the price will be but I'll let you know the outcome and the price.
So the original pharmacist I spoke to was incorrect in what he told me. I'm going back to my doc and getting a new prescription with those specific ingrediants on it and see if that will work! My pharmacy is Springhill Pharmacy in Wheat Ridge CO. 8550 W. 38th Ave. I'll keep you all updated.

06/23/11- You can still get Midrin at compounding pharmacies! I just got some today. They simply order the three ingrediants that are in midrin, compound them, put them in the capsule. My price was $55 for 60 caps or $45. for 30. Just google compounding pharmacies in your area.

I am also looking for the generic version of Midrin. It also works better than anything else for me. I see that it can be ordered at Pharmnet RX on their web site. I have just placed the order and must have the script sent to them, so cannot say with 100%accuracy that they have it available. check their web site out

You said it wasn't sold in the US any longer, but is it sold in Canada? If so, how would I get a perscription filled there. Thanks for the info.

Can you let me know if you find anything that works as good as Midrin. I tried Fiuroset and it made me really loopy and dizzy. Nothing has ever worked for my migraines and I have had them since I was a kid. I called the doctor to ask for Amidrine and he said none of the meds with the same ingredients in it are available any longer. So, the latest news on this website must be correct because of the lack for FDA approval. That really stinks because I never got any side effects from it.

I am sorry to have to inform you of this, but that is correct, Midrin and other products or generics that contain these same ingredients are no longer available in the U.S.

The specific ingredients were Acetaminophen, Isometheptene and Dichloralphenazone.

The reason it has been discontinued, by all manufacturers is that this medication was actually never approved by the FDA. It is an old drug, that was basically grandfathered in, when their new policies went into effect, however, for it to continue being marketed, the companies that manufacture it must now do studies on its safety and efficacy. The FDA has started cracking down on these 'grandfathered' medications and many companies have chosen to stop making them available on the market. Their reasoning for this is unknown, but it may be related to sales of certain medications. For instance if they aren't big sellers, it may not be worth their expense to undergo the testing and approval process.

The only suggestion I can make is to talk to your doctors and discuss your other treatment options.

You can learn more about them and the FDA approved treatments here:
