Metroprolol Side Effects After 1 Year? Possible?

Dear all,
I am so freaked out. My husband, age 41 had a widowmaker heart attack almost exactly a year ago... Jan 25, 2014. He had a drug eluting stent put in. He's been doing great all year, and in the last few weeks he's been experiencing shortness of breath again... No other symptoms. Just that. We went to his cardiologist this morning. He thinks that it may be the metroprolol he's been taking. May be reducing his bp too much and causing shortness of breath... Or maybe the cold weather.,he cut the metoprolol and said to wait a week and see if it goes away. If it doesn't he will need to do a stress diagnostic again. I'm so scared he has another blockage or restenosis.... The doc said restenosis usually has other symptoms too... Like feet swelling or chest pain etc.. Also he only had one blockage during his heart attack. Could another have developed over the year even though he had no others blocked and has been doing great? He was already thin and lost 20 lbs, eating well, exercise etc. ??? Does anyone have experience with this sort of issue ???

Awesome! I'm so very happy to hear that news!! All the best to you both!
Hello,
He had a full nuclear stress test and it turned out just fine, thank god! Doc said likely just seasonal allergies.... I'm relieved that the stent is fine and no new blockages! Thank you for your answers!
I am so very sorry and I understand, it is terrifying! I am also a heart patient having had full CHF a few years ago, so I know what it's like.
Can you please post back and let me know what you find out? I hope all is well!
Hello,
Thank you very much. He cut the metoprolol a few days ago, but still experiencing the shortness of breath... He is having a full stress test with imaging tomorrow. I am very very nervous. His doc thinks a new blockage or restenosis is unlkely, as hes been on meds, taking care of himself, working out and lost 20lbs (even though he was thin to start with.) If its a new blockage it would break his spirit, considering the lifestyle changes... and mine... Doc thinks maybe more pulmonary.. But we will find out tomorrow. I cant believe this is happening just as we are about to hit the 1 year mark of his heart attack. Jan just seems to be a bad month all the time. My dad had his 5 artery bypass in Jan..two years ago... My husband his heart attack in January last year, and now symptoms in Jan. Our new years always have been starting out horribly... :( Just hoping and praying he is OK!!
Hello, HeartWife! How are you and your husband doing? I'm sorry about the problem he's having.
Yes, it is possible that it could be due to the Metoprolol working too well. Over time, as his blood pressure, heart rate and heart function improve, his blood pressure stays naturally lower, but the medication continues working in the same way, so it can start to cause both the blood pressure and heart rate to fall too low.
It is normal and, when this happens, dosage adjustments are sometimes required. I am a heart patient myself and the same thing happened to me after a year or so. We eventually had to completely eliminate some medications and drop to a very low dose on the others.
Typical Metoprolol side effects, as listed by the FDA, may include nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach pain and hypotension.
Is there anything else I can help with?
