I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

I also read that the majority of the serotonin is found in the GUT. Maybe that explains why the symptoms take a while to go away ( it can take 6 months to a year to replenish the gut).

I looked into serotonin syndrome when I was first sick. A lot of symptoms match but many don't. The drug causes damage at the back of the brain. That doesn't make it permanent, though--the brain doesn't heal but it reroutes signals. It heals in its own way. But it takes a long time.

I am currently having cycles of 3 days a week where things seem to be getting better and then 4 days where it is awful. It feels as though it is always there though. I have done so much research on the Internet, the library and looked at scientific articles about the side effects of metronidazole, but I don't seem to be further along because I'm not a scientist and so I don't know if I am a fast metabolizer of the drug or how much my mitochondrial DNA has been damaged. My doctor says it will probably go away but I guess time will tell.

I don't know, I think it depends on the person. I was looking at case studies that I found online about metronidazole and age didn't seem to be a factor. One thing that was was the genetic profile. There were case studies in India where men in their thirties had really strong adverse effects to metronidazole even after small doses and they theorized it was due to how they metabolized the drug.

The older you are, the more likely to suffer from seizures while taking the drug. The younger you are, the more likely to have psychiatric issues. Motor control issues cut across all ages.

Thanks for the reply Erin. It's difficult to find information on metronidazole in comparison to some other antibitoics. Some adverse side effects of metronidazole are not even mentionned on the list yet they are possible adverse side effects of other antibiotics. It's very confusing.

metronidazole has given me really bad anxiety attacks, so bad it effects my whole life, I have had to see a psychiatrist and am taking escitalopram, has anyone else suffered these symptoms.

Vanessa I also had horrible anxiety. Just like Erin says...she describes it perfectly. I didn't think I'd ever get off the couch. Plus, I had a strange "down-ish" feeing that's hard to describe. Like I was terrified of being optimistic, and I'm normally a very optimistic person. I am still having sporadic feelings of anxiety but not constant like it was. I had Flagyl in February and took only one course of 7 days. Please don't despair....I didn't think it would improve but it has slowly. I'm glad you are seeing someone. I didn't but this forum has helped me so much!

Randolf.....the vagus nerve connects all those areas that you are experiencing the pulsating sensation....if it was damaged or injured by the med then the connection between it and the brain may be damaged. try some of those exercises I copied and pasted.....some or all and do it a lot. I was advised to do some so I used to sing as loud as i could at a high pitch....when i was driving because no one could hear me. LOL

Randolf--- I have not posted here in quite a while. I have been living with the painful side effects since April 2009. I am not here for advice as my list of what I tried to get back to a life without pain seems to be longer than most from years of Glut IVs, all sorts of therapy, acupuncture, even fecal from another for good bacteria and the list goes on. I did see a post on the STOMACH pulsing. I had the same thing for years when I was first dealing with this. I might be way off, but where the ribs divide away there is an area that shows a beat. If someone is thin there it shows easily. I had drs. look into this on me so many times. Even before Floxed, my general Dr. would always take a second look at this on me. It can feel like it is beating hard when I lie down at times but it even after all tests, cardio and all, it was normal. Again, I do not know where the pulsing is for you, but thought this might be good to add for you.

My eyesight worsened after taking this med last Sept and other symptoms have improved greatly or disappeared but my eyesight has not gotten better at all. I can no longer read without my glasses..

Wow that is one issue I've just heard about that can happen from this med. I don't know what to do but try some KY jelly as a lubricant. You do need to discuss this with your doctor. Most doctors still don't think this medication is a problem and won't change their minds unless you keep bringing it to their attention. The med is dangerous I believe and having been on this forum for a while I do keep seeing new people coming on here regularly talking about the side effects so it is not a minor thing.

I took flagyl for 4 days before I couldn't handle it anymore I was totally out of it brain fog, pain in fingers, so unbelievably tired, and the list continues.. I've now been off it for 6 days the day after I stopped I had severe chest pain that's when all this started I have chest pain, pain in left side face and jaw, extreme fatigue, mood/mental issues, pain going down left arm and leg, throat tighness, shortness of breathe, and extreme unbalanced this drug has taken over and ruined my life please someone tell me this gets better oh and my face is red most of the time and hot ti the touch and hot from inside yet no fever

Hi. I'm so glad I have found this forum. I was prescribed metronidazole 1200mg per day for 10 days in September to treat c difficile infection. Whilst on the drug I experienced some side effects such as pins and needles in left face and fingers and also anxiety, however it treated the c diff (which was very debilitating) whilst I was on it. However 3 days later I had c diff come back and I was given a second 10 day course of metronidazole. The side effects were much worse this time with horrible taste, dry mouth, pins and needles, extreme pressure headache and feeling of fullness in throat, nausea, stomach pain, high blood pressure, return of diarrhea etc. I was admitted to hospital with very high blood pressure last Saturday and have just been released today. The hospital didn't consider the side effects of the drug and thought it was c diff back again, but as the metronidazole started to leave my system I suddenly felt a lot better so I think they thought I was some hypochondriac anxious about c diff returning.
I was given IV fluids in hospital and drank loads of water and I think this helps flush the metronidazole out. I feel pretty awful now I'm off IV again so am going to try lots of water. I have real anxiety and cried for ages last night for no reason. Hope it goes away soon. I will never take this drug again. I have no support at home so battling this alone.

Omg! I can't believe you did 2 rounds of this stuff! I am so so sorry! I did one round to treat h pylori in October of 2016 and am still trying to figure out what is going on. Dizzy all day. I feel like I'm hungover all day long at work and so foggy headed. It takes me so long to comprehend new things now. But I know others have it worse. This drug is terrible. FDA doesn't care. Neither do the makers of this drug and the doctors don't even KNOW these side effects! I threatened my doctor with a legal suit and instead I just look like a lunatic.

I am still suffering six months later and and very sick. I now am stuck waiting for doctors to believe it's the drug and get real help. They don't know what to do with me. Everyday I wake up and regret taking this evil poison.

I have also taken this drug for just two days and in fact, someone should be here to witness what I'm going through. Drowsiness, dizziness and loss of appetite keep troubling me, though I have suspended taking it 24hrs ago. Can somebody help me find a remedy to this?

The question is, what were you taking it for and can you get the dr to give you a different prescription... and if so read all the info on it before filling the prescription... and then don't take this med again and hope that no irreparable damage has occurred. You were wise to stop immediately. From experience you will not know if these symptoms will continue but do not keep taking it. When I took it I was having other symptoms plus these and saw my doctor and she said it would be fine and for me to take the last 2 days doses....etc... but then she admitted later that it was the medication that created the issue and she sent me to a neurologist who prescribed physical therapy that helped.

I really hope this helps! A lot of us with metronidazole toxicity, myself included, are giving this a try:

A couple of things: You need high doses of thiamine for this to be effective. It's okay to work your way up, but the standard 50 mg's to 100 mg's a day on the bottle--it ain't gonna cut it in the long run. I didn't even feel any difference until I doubled to 200 mg's a day; now I'm up to 450 mg's daily (300 at lunch, 150 at dinner) and plan to go up to 550 mg's this weekend.

Thiamine is non-toxic and it's hard to overdose on because it's a water-soluble vitamin. However, prolonged use at high doses might imbalance the other B-vitamins, so eventually--not now--get a B-complex vitamin. I say "not now" because, if you're thiamine deficient, then taking a B-complex will further imbalance your B-vitamins because of the deficiency (a lot of MT toxicity victims end up on B12 and it seems to make them worse--maybe this is why?).

Second, you need magnesium. Avoid magnesium stearate--it's cheap stuff. There are better versions available--I like magnesium powder like Natural Calm (the Vitamin Shoppe has this). You can overdose on magnesium, so don't go overboard on it.

This won't be a quick fix--it might be weeks before you notice a difference (if I'm correct, of course. That's the question!).
