Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 59)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

Wow that is one issue I've just heard about that can happen from this med. I don't know what to do but try some KY jelly as a lubricant. You do need to discuss this with your doctor. Most doctors still don't think this medication is a problem and won't change their minds unless you keep bringing it to their attention. The med is dangerous I believe and having been on this forum for a while I do keep seeing new people coming on here regularly talking about the side effects so it is not a minor thing.

Please go see a toxicologist at a hospital or private centre. You have been poisoned to a certain extent. I am very sick from Flagyl and have been having sudden new symptoms 6 months later.

Hi. I'm so glad I have found this forum. I was prescribed metronidazole 1200mg per day for 10 days in September to treat c difficile infection. Whilst on the drug I experienced some side effects such as pins and needles in left face and fingers and also anxiety, however it treated the c diff (which was very debilitating) whilst I was on it. However 3 days later I had c diff come back and I was given a second 10 day course of metronidazole. The side effects were much worse this time with horrible taste, dry mouth, pins and needles, extreme pressure headache and feeling of fullness in throat, nausea, stomach pain, high blood pressure, return of diarrhea etc. I was admitted to hospital with very high blood pressure last Saturday and have just been released today. The hospital didn't consider the side effects of the drug and thought it was c diff back again, but as the metronidazole started to leave my system I suddenly felt a lot better so I think they thought I was some hypochondriac anxious about c diff returning.
I was given IV fluids in hospital and drank loads of water and I think this helps flush the metronidazole out. I feel pretty awful now I'm off IV again so am going to try lots of water. I have real anxiety and cried for ages last night for no reason. Hope it goes away soon. I will never take this drug again. I have no support at home so battling this alone.
Wishing everyone on here better.

Wow... this is really rough! So many of us have had some of the same symptoms so you are not a hypochondriac... just poisoned by this drug.. Is the c. difficile gone? Are you feeling any better at all?

Re: BAH (# 1167) Expand Referenced Message

Thanks so much for the message BAH. This forum helped me feel less alone when I spotted it. At present, I am clear of the c diff for 5 days so hopefully I don't relapse again. I'm taking really good quality probiotics which seem to help. I am also normally very fit and active, but I feel physically quite shaky and anxious, something I've never experienced before. Water really helps, I feel like if I lose the taste in my mouth it might mean the metronidazole has gone. Thanks again and I will chart progress to help others deal with this. Xx

Yes, it does help to know of others and talk with them about this, and learn from each other... the taste in my mouth was so bad that I sucked on mints for two weeks, then got a raging case of oral thrush.. Recently I was advised by a naturopath to take probiotics and I said I'd not noticed it ever helped and she said you have to take it for 12 weeks.... this is the first time anyone EVER said that.. no wonder I'd given up on getting any help from it.. She also said not to take it with antibiotics because it didn't really help..but to take a lot of it for 12 weeks.. a lot meaning a high level of strains of probiotics... so I liked for the highest level possible and a liquid because after a while my mind and mouth refuses to take any more pills and I end up not taking the ones that are vital to my survival, like my thyroid meds... so I've worked out ways to get what I need in liquid form instead. Hang in there... hope that something we talk about will be helpful to you!!.

Re: BAH (# 1169) Expand Referenced Message

Sounds like you've really struggled with this for some time and I am amazed by the accounts on here. I definitely swear by probiotics and wish I had taken them when I took penicillin which enabled the c diff to take hold. I may not have got so ill. I have no underlying health conditions and was taking no other meds. I am finding small healthy meals and lots of water is helping. I hope you improve and I hope to share positive information for others. Early days and trying to keep a lid on this weird anxiety. I'm going to drop a note to my doctor to let them know what has happened. Sending hugs and good wishes.

Weird, I've never had any problems taking this medication except for the nausea in the morning from the awful taste it leaves in your mouth. I was just prescribed 500 mg 2x a day for 7 days. But everything you folks experienced or are experiencing I've never had to deal with. Maybe you can try boiling lemon slices in water then take out the slices of lemon, strain it then add honey. Maybe this little concoction will help flush out whatever is in your body.

Re: Loren (# 1171) Expand Referenced Message

Hi. I was ok on the first course mostly, but was on 1200mg for 10 days, then 3 days later the same again so think it was the 20 days of 1200mg that caused my problems. Too much for my body to handle. Anxiety is starting to subside today, but nausea and feeling shaky still causing me problems. Glad you didn't get these problems Loren and might try the honey and lemon approach ??

Re: Tonya (# 1165) Expand Referenced Message

It depends on how much this drug poisoned you. I am just getting worse 6 months on. Please find a good doctor as soon as possible who can help you. I got all your symptoms and more.

Re: AJ (# 1162) Expand Referenced Message

Please do stop taking it as dryness is listed as a dangerous side effect but ask your pharmacist for the cream with no side effects that you can use to replace it to get rid of the BV.

My entire body was numb for four and a half months. Then, one day I regained a bit of sensation maybe 30 % and my jerking limbs stopped for a bit but then I got terrible new symptoms and my numbness has come back. I have also gained a lot of weight and can't stop gaining and my muscle wasting is getting worse and I keep swelling.

What on earth did your doctor say about these side effects? Were you ever sent to a neurologist?

Re: BAH (# 1176) Expand Referenced Message

He said they would go away but unbeknownst to me did not take me seriously (no blood tests or MRI or CT scans). He did send me to a neurologist who did an EMG and it was ok but three months later when the symptoms were not going away and were getting worse he just ridiculed me and stonewalled me from seeing the neurologist. He threw antidepressants at me and didn't bother to see me again or recommend anybody else to see. I ended up having to get a new doctor who is helping me now but a lot of it is wait and see and we don't really know how much can really be recovered.

I"m doing really well after the physical therapy and tai chi exercises because my issues were mainly dizziness and thus a fear of falling.... and polyneuropathy, both of which were helped by PT. I think I'm lucky I wasn't effected to the same extent as you are.
