Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 56) (Top voted first)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
Anyone on here have stomach problems? I'm a year off and all of a sudden having issues with the stomach( I've had heartburn but it has gotten worse
Tracy, how long did it take for your withdrawl symptoms to disapear?
Hi Anthony- I only took metoprolol, for 1 1/2 then tapered off over 3 weeks. The side effects from the met were horrible. No the withdrawls are no better. I have experienced all of the side effects you mentioned...today is 10days w/o. I am starting to notice my anxiety & palpatations are easing a little. I have moments thought out the day, that I feel normal. I'm hoping this will all clear up soon!
Hi Kris thanks for the reply! I understand there are moments when i feel fine but then the anxiety kicks in out of nowhere and i feel short of breath at times throughout the day aswell!.. I am 2 months off and still having random flares of these withdrawal symptoms, they are not as bad as the 1st month, im just hoping they keep on easing off soon.
I never imagined a medication would make your whole body lose control like this.
I just started a taper of this drug on Monday. Been on it a year. Couldn't figure out what was making me so sick as I have MS and chalk everything up to that. I always ran a little high on my BP but when I go to appointments is way worse I truly believe I have what's called white coat hypertension some may dismiss it but my blood pressure is always off the chart whenever I'm in a medical facility I ended up in the ER the other day. So sick it's hard to put into words. Well it's the metoprolol succ ER. I was in 100mgs. 50 in am 50 pm. It's done nothing much for the BP. What it has done is given me 30lbs and very sick. I'm on a 6 week taper to get off the drug. I never should have agreed to take it. Hope to do ok as I'm told withdrawing from this drug too fast is dangerous. Anyone's thoughts on this are appreciated. Thank you
Starry
I was put on this for high blood pressure also, but did nothing for me at all. I was on it for 6 months and tapered off over a 3 week period. Coming off this horrible med will be tough, but you just have to be patient and remain calm. I am now 3 months off of thid and i am barely starting to feel my normal self again, i still get random palpitations every now and then and a little weakness and fatigue, but it is a whole lot better then the first 2 months which were horrible! Just keep in mind that things will get better as the days go by.
Starry,
I was put on this medication because i had high blood pressure only at the doctors office, but when i would check it at home it would be fine. I should have never started this medication. At the doctors my BP readings where 144/90, 157/88, 140/87, 137/84... at home my readings where 124/74, 121/73, 126/80, and the highest at home 134/82. I told myself i suffered from white coat hypertension, High BP only at the doctors... just keep praying and be calm and patient, things will get better! I highly recommend this organic tea called Hibiscus Tea, it has amazing health benefits including controlling anxiety and lowering blood pressure! I have been taking it for 4 weeks now and trust me it has helped me tremendously!
I have been taking Metoprolol for two years for curing side effects from another drug. Wanted to stop because I vomitted almost all food. The doctor said. "you have to do it yourself. I can´t help you" I was deperate. At last I got help from an acupuncteur to stop Metoprolol slowly. Had no side effects at all. But they came a time after stopping the acupunct (it was expensive) Then I got a pressure over my breast. Took Magnesium Taurate and was good for around 14 days then the breast pain returned. Now I am trying to eat E-vitamin which has helped a friend of mine.
Hope it will help because I never go back to betablocks. Prefer to die. (Sorry for my bad english. I am swedish)
Yes I have had the same withdraws it's horrible been on it fore years then I had one heart doctor take off but but slowly then after much of course my heart rate went up a little so my new heart felt I should go back on metoprolol 25mg.so I did unfortunately I ran out and I thought well I would be okay for a few.days wow I gotten withdraw so bad I thought I was dying.dont ever go cold turkey, they finally got my med refilled but I had to wait for my doctor to call it in took four days to get it filled I'm still suffering the withdraw,my plan is coming off it real slow like the first heart doctor that took me off.i wished I nevered agreed. To go back on,now it's going take probably months to completely come off of it again
I got help from vitamine E natural. Take four of them daily and it helps
Loulanda- you would have to lower your dose super slow . Take your time you don't want to end up going thru what I went thru. My doctor unfortunately didn't tell me to taper off and I went thru hell and still dealing with the anxiety left from 2 yrs ago
Yes. Please listen to JR. This is a process. Talk to your doc so you can get off this poison safely
JR: how awful that your doc didn't taper you off. Just awful. How are you handling the anxiety?
I currently started taking lexapro again I took it for 8 months and it worked but I need to take my time this time around and do therapy and then get off .
Hi Moventia,
To answer your questions, my first bad experience with Metoprolol occurred in the spring of 2015, at which time I was also recovering from a rather severe case of diverticulitis. Since I was essentially on a liquid diet for several days while also taking very strong antibiotics, I lost several pounds as a result. I tend to believe that the initial loss of weight was the primary reason for the Metoprolol to spiral out of control. It was at that time that I found MedsChat and realized that I needed to go through a weaning process. In other words, at the time I was in a wreck due to this drug, both physically and mentally.
Regarding exercise, I've always been active during the summer months and not so much during the winter months. I couldn't exercise at all during the weaning and withdrawal process, for I felt extremely weak and fatigued. This was also compounded with chest pain, heart palps, dizziness, anxiety, etc., etc. If I tried to walk any more than a block in town, I'd end up in the ER. Like many others have said here, all of the doctors thought I was nuts, primarily because they couldn't find anything wrong that seemed out of ordinary.
But again, to make a long story short, once my severe withdrawal symptoms started going away, I started walking slowly and on a regular basis, and that led to finally having enough confidence to get on the bicycle again. The diverticulitis issues also forced me to drastically change my diet, and that included the elimination of alcohol, fatty foods, junk food, and any other foods that weren't easily digestible. I'm quite sure that alone helped in losing some weight. I've always been a cyclist as well, but this time around I got pretty serious about it again, and by the end of the summer of 2015, I was riding about 100 to 150 miles per week. Since I live in a cold climate, I've also started riding an indoor bike throughout much of the fall, winter and spring seasons. In a nutshell, though, between diet and exercise, it really didn't take that long for me to get back to my normal weight, at which time my blood pressure also settled into a very safe zone. I obviously let myself get out of shape for two or three years, and it was undoubtedly the cause of having relatively high blood pressure in the first place.
I honestly don't know if Metoprolol has an effect on whether or not someone can lose weight. In my case, I just knew that I had to get healthy again or I'd be in trouble, so it pretty much forced me into a healthier lifestyle.
Anyway, I hope this helps in answering your questions. I wish you the best of luck!
Re: Jimbo (# 1827)
Hi Jimbo
I can relate. I started off with a six week taper but I extended it after reading everyone's posts I'm down to a very small amount every day but I stretched it another six weeks I'm hoping 12 weeks of a taper and then an additional three weeks of every other day until I'm all done will help I've had a tough time with that this is the worst drug ever I never should've been placed on this at all at best I suffered from white coat hypertension I've ended up in the ER a few times and everything cardiac checks out perfect so it's definitely this drug and in fact the ER doctor was very surprised I was placed on this as a first-line for hypertension which really amounts to whitecoat hypertension I've always run a little bit high but none of my other doctors before I moved here we're concerned enough about it that they would put me on a medication for it I just made a few adjustments and that was it when I got here is when everybody flipped out and I was placed on this medication after a year of hell I made up my own mind to wean off of it and got my doctor to approve it I would've done it anyway because I would've refused to have this medication any longer than I have to I actually have anxiety and this just made it worse but now I also have a bit of anxiety as to what it's going to be like when I'm finally off it because of everything I've read I'm worried about what could happen to me once I don't take any doses of it how pathetic is that one drug could make me this afraid
I think my blood pressure fluctuates mostly because I suffer from anxiety post war in addition to I have MS and that plays on my mind a lot in terms of my future with MS I really think my doctor jumped the gun and I think she realizes that as well hope your days are better
Re: Jimbo (# 1829)
Thanks Jimbo. I'm giving each dose reduction 2-3 weeks Hopefully that's ok
I can't believe what poison this Med is!
Thanks for your input
Re: Jimbo (# 1831)
I couldn't have said it better myself Jimbo that's exactly what I feel
