Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 51)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
CJJ88, it seems that many of us have had similar problems, not only with socializing, but with all of the rebound effects that go along with it. When I first started weaning off the drug, I found myself with terrible anxiety, and a simple walk around the house would result in chest pain, heart palps, dizziness, high blood pressure & heart rate.....you name it. I had to cancel everything outside of the home during my four or five weeks of weaning as well as during most of the five-week withdrawal period. The "fog" or "weird" head just put me into an entirely different dimension of life. I felt as though I had nothing to live for other than trying to get through each day one day at a time. If anything felt like hell on earth, this was it. One of the first days where I began to feel better I decided to do an errand that required walking just one block from my house. My body just seemed to refuse that type of exercise, and it resulted in an ambulance trip to the ER. And, this is coming from someone who typically bikes 25 per day during the warmer months and walks a minimum of two miles a day during the winter. Unfortunately, the vast majority of side effects we've had or still are enduring are all a part of getting off of this drug. It wasn't until I found this website that I finally realized I wasn't alone in this.
Just to be clear, I absolutely will not take tapazole , I am using the thyroid calming natural tincture. No more big pharma for me !
Been a challenging day here, very woozy head, but no palps. Trying to remain positive. First it takes this board forever to post that long message, and then I discover they posted it twice, sorry guys!
Lauren..so if we don't take anything for thyroid it wont reset itself or get better?
Anita short version since I've lost 2 replies! Cardiologist recommended Red Yeast Rice. Getting purest one is the decision since not Che cked like pharmaceutical driugs. It along with Pravachol, Zetia and Creston caused cramping. I'm just not taking anything. Number is 230-250. Last week down to 214. Nothing magic just using Krill oil now that might be affecting the lower number. Use coconut oil for toast and some cooking. Toast in AM is that plus gob of cinnamon. Coffee with creamer and cinnamon sprinkle. I am not a red meat eater and not big on fish. Eat lots of veggies and fruit. I do eat chocolate candy and ice cream but not too extreme. Just sharing. I have family history also of elevated cholesterol. I'm 74 so just sharing. I know many posters here are likely much younger. Good luck. Keep us posted. Good group here.
She says the ongoing symptoms are indicative of the thyroid having problems resetting its self. So if it cannot reset itself due to the insult from the M, then symptoms may continue or re emerge for quite some time until it can adjust. First logical answers I have heard as to WHY some of us have such lingering issues. So depressing - one never understands just how MUCH the thyroid does for us until it malfunctions. :/
Does any ones heart rate go up after eating a heavier meal ?
I have had hypothyroid for many years and have been on levothyroxine way before the M so I'm sure my thyroid is totally confused but it is getting better. That makes so much sense about the thyroid resetting itself so much sense. I'm sure the whole body is trying to reset itself. This is the first day that my pulse hasn't gone over 95 when just walking into another room it was actually 86 yay! For the last couple of weeks it was in the higher nintys and prior to that 110 so it continues to adjust itself but who knows next week I could be up in the hundreds again. Amazing how things come to the surface then go away but come back again. I have a doc appt on the 29th and when I saw her last she took me off the M and said she wanted to see me in three months. She also asked me to keep track of any anxiety I may have and I thought to myself "anxiety...from M" but I didn't say anything and went home researching M withdrawal and actually pfffft it off and thought that it's only a bp med but OH how WRONG I was!!!! I have quite the mouthful for her when I see her. I thank God for her and the doc I had before her because prior to them I lived in another State for many years and I had a different doc that originally put me on M. When I moved out here and saw my first new doc he was wondering why I was on M. We just blew it off and he left that place so I had to find another doc and same thing she wanted to know why would they put you on M and I said your the second doc to ask so that's when she had me keep track of my bp and then took me off. Thank God for those two docs cause I would've just kept going not knowing what was wrong with me. I know blah blah blah but I'm starting to want to share this. Have more but need to sit quiet for a bit.
Loneafib... I'm not a physician but after a bit week you're maybe just getting some changes from Met. Be careful stopping because of possible rebound high blood pressure.
Going to a new cardiologist today . Hope everything works out with this one since the last one messed me up with the M . She put me on 200 mgs of the M For 10 months
Thank you Jimbo, I just saw your reply to me. I am still having problems with sleep along with the anxiety but knowing other people pushed through keeps me fighting.
JR -yes my heart rate goes up after a big meal. In fact I found out it is acid reflux, even though it doesn't butn. It's a serious condition. Try zantac 75 mg
or better yet go see a gastrointologist
I stopped taking it and this is day 2. Feel great!
What's weird is everyrime my heart races or goes into afib I have to throw up acid indegestion. I stick my finger in my throat to induce it because I feel that I need to puke. Never really put 2 and 2 together. So today took Zantac 75 mg for the first time and I feel like superman and very normal and smiled all day. I bet acid reflux has been my problem the whole time
Thanks LoneAfib ill try that .
How are you doing Lauren? I just want to check in with you
JR-hAve you taken a Zantac yet? How do you feel? Make sure to burp. Close your eyes and concentrate on getting the burp up out of your stomach
No i havent i felt better but i bought some in case i do eat something heavy. Thanks LonaAfib for the info !!!
Not so much eating a heavy meal but chocolate! Recently noticed if I eat more carbs (which I try to be watchful of) I lose control of what I believe is my balanced M-free self. My natural supplements then appear to struggle to control palpitations. This is very recent so still sus sing it out but I have eaten in particular "Matchmaker" chocolates and mentally linked them with palpitations! Not happy. Scares me a tiny bit. Going to read the ingredients to see what hidden contents might be triggering this besides sugar!
You might be alergic to something in chocolate. Or you might simply have GERDS disease. Zantac can curd that. Don't waste anytime. Figure out if you have GERDS or acid reflux immediately. If that's the problem then you can quit metoprolol. This is what happened to me and the cardiologist had no inclination that my fast heartbeats were being caused by GERDs so he put me on metoprolol after doing an echo gram and EKG and telling me there is no explanation because my heart looks fine.
Michael, I know you want off metoprolol. How long have you been on it? How much have you been taking?
