Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 35) (Top voted first)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
Please help, I was on metoprolol for about a year and a half for takicardia, I didn't take it everyday prob three times a week only when I would go into takicardia, I stopped on 50mg cold turkey for a few days I thought I was gonna die, they put me on propranolol, I just got worse so I weaned off the propranolol in about three weeks not a proper wean off, I stopped on oct 31 2014, so I've been off for over four months, it's not as bad as when I first got off, if I get excited or if I sit for a short time then get up and walk around I feel like I'm gonna fall over or faint and I'll check my pulse and my heart will be pounding, I can't think straight I feel like I'm gonna lose my mind, I'm stuck in my house, I've had anxiety problems for years now i am an Iraqi veteran and did twelve years in the military I was always healthy, so the only insurance I have is the VA hospital, they do not help whatsoever, they put me on klonopin for the anxiety, and PTSD, it's like if I get excited it hurts I begged the doctor for an adrenaline test and a holster monitor and an echo, fell on def ears they gave me an EKG and blood work and said my heart was fine, I talked to a cardiologist and he told me it was my PTSD, and anxiety, no way I have never felt like this I know there is some kind of unbalance with adrenaline, over four months and I'm scared to leave the house but I push myself, I just saw my primary care doctor yesterday and said this has nothing to do with the metoprolol or the propranolol I just turned 30, I can just now sit and watch tv and kind of pay attention, someday I feel so much anxiety I can't breath even with the klonopin, my blood pressure is normal, my heart rate is everywhere but sitting down my resting heartrate is normal, 80s my BP was 120/76 witch is good, so I don't know if I need to keep on taking it easy, or start walking again, I miss exercising but it's so scary now the way my heart pounds and the dizziness and chest pain, any advice about how to get this drug completely out of my system would be helpful, I just started taking fish oil magnesium and coq10, I also have no appatite lost 35 pounds since I got off this drug and it has been an absolute nightmare, any advice would be helpfull I'm 30 years old and was always a healthy person. Please help, I have milk thistle and for what I read it stays in your liver should I take the milk thistle. The PTSD and anxiety is hard enough with this on top of it it is to much. Again any advice would be much appreciated I just want my life back thank you.
I would also lke to know the same thing. I had a trip to the ER a week ago because of vertigo and a bad headache. They found out my blood pressure was 200/130 and gave me 3 doses of IV Lopressor and sent me home with a perscription for metoprolol. I have been on metoprolol 50 mg twice daily for 1 week and I have noticed I am extremely exhausted and out of it since I have started taking it so I googled this medicine and I don't like what I have learned about it. Can i just stop taking this or do I need to wean off. I don't like how I am feeling on this medicine. I did help my blood pressure it was down to 136/76 on Thursday when I did a follow up with my Dr. But like I said I am feeling Horrible from this medicine.
I've been weening off Metoprolol for about a month now. I went to 75% of original dose for about 3 weeks. During that time the only real withdrawal I noticed was mildly rapid heart rate at times and a whooshing sound in my ears, and perhaps some irritability. When those side effects stopped I stepped it down another 25%, so now I am at 50% original dose. The uncomfortable withdrawal effects aren't as bad this drop as they were the first. I am taking my time, not sure how long it will take to fully recover, but looking forward to being off!
LEONIE!
Were you talking Prednisone or Corticosteroids at some point?
Bee, I'd give excersize a try. During my withdrawal period, excersize would give me 1-2 hours of relief afterwards. I would start with walking. Once, I got chased by a wasp and ran like crazy home. My heart rate went up like never before. Unexpectedly, I felt so good afterwards. My cardiologist said vigorous excersize helps.
Hi again.
I also wanted to say that I was walking a lot for about two years.. Atleast 2 miles a day but I had to stop back last Sept. due to all of these side effects.. I will now resume again..
I also have a pretty good diet.. I had lost 35lb. but put some back on.. trying to get rid of ten now.......I am 60 years old and have been a vegetarian for 15 years. No red meat or even chicken or turkey as I don't really like those things. I usually stick with veggies, eggplant, some pasta, quinoa, egg whites, sometimes eggs, Beans, chilli, salads, oatmeal, veggie burgers, etc.etc. I do eat fish and of course I do cheat but not a lot.. I don't eat junk food, processed food or fast food.. and yes I do cheat but its with no salt taco chips .. I do eat some dairy but not a lot. No milk, some cheese and most of my food is organic.. one reason I was puzzed as to why I had high blood pressure but I am assuming I was eating too many carbs and was overweight and not walking and since I was 58 years old I figured its part of aging process. I also was having a lot of stress at that time.. I am learning to deal with the stress now although that is difficult for me.. I also feel like I do have high anxiety at times...
thank you
I watch my salt intake and stick to celtic sea salt..
thank You
Btw Bee, I had horrible heart palpitations when sleeping. The only way I could stop it was to sleep straight on my back. I don't recall how long it took, but I don't have them anymore. One of the signs I knew I was getting better was the ability to sleep on my side. :) Congratulations on weaning off...I really hope you continue to get better each day.
Ivaliuana, congrats to you on the weaning process. Sounds like it's going well for you!
thanks Joyce.. I will def. sleep on my back .. and see how that goes..
I woke up two nights in a row with what felt like panic attacks while sleeping. heart rate went up but not too bad.... but couldn't get back to sleep.. I read something about adrenal rushes when getting off meds and eating certain foods and things. I am wondering if this stuff is having a hard time leaving my body or am I just having bad panic in my sleep? never heard of that.... I do have anxiety about some issues so I am doing the EFT tapping for that.............. could I have developed a panic disorder from this drug as I never had this before..
I notice that I stupidly drank a protein shake with stevia in it so going to stop doing that.. And on Sunday night I had some pizza and had palps. and then read that some pizza places put MSG in their pizza.. So I will be making my own pizza from now on....
Not sure about a center to go exercise.. and not sure what the cost would be.. no insurance blah blah. I so appreciate the help
If you try the ACV use the one that says Organic Braggs name with the "Mother' in it.. you can check for interactions online.......but I have taken ACV with water when I was on the Metoprolol.. and I don't even think I checked the interaction but do your own research.. check the internet and all before you mix certain things.. oh; and yes I do believe ACV can lower blood pressure...
Bee, I have news for you. It took me a year to really get to feeling better after getting off of M and it has been two years now and I still have some effects of getting off of the stuff. It is poison. I have give up that I will ever be myself again. I took it for four years and looks like it is going to take four years to get off of it
Ruby
wow thank you...............actually since I last posted I have been sleeping much better and if I wake up now I go right back to sleep without palps or anything.. but I do proceed with caution and there are snippets of the side effects but minimal.. Heck though I am taking a boatload of supplements and vitamins now.... I have also learned that some backstrap molasses, motherwort and hawthorn herbs stop racing heart and lower blood pressure too...............Its been such a nightmare for a year and two months......but I get still nervous about other side effects such as heart related things..
Many blessings!!!
Has anyone who was on Toprol 47.5 had sore muscles and joints? I asked my cardiologist if I could go off the Toprol to see if that's what it was. He said ok, so I've been off for almost a week now and was driving home tonight and had anxiety symptoms, racing heart, feeling weird, had to pull over. I also think my aches and pains have decreased a bit since being off it for only 4 days. How long will the heart racing go on for? I want to stay off it and go on to natural supps. Anyone had this happen?
Still sitting at 25% of the dose, still having palpitations and once in awhile it will skip a beat. I also noticed some very minor bloating in my legs. Not sure when to stop it altogether. Maybe ripping it off like a band aid would be best?
how should i start coming off metropolol been taking twice a day for four years 47.5 my doctor has said it will been beneficial in doing so have had side effects with taking right from the start want to feel normal again
I cut my Metroprolol 100 mg per day to 50 mg 2 months ago. I logged my intent here on this site at the time.
I have never felt unwell on M and feel very good mentally and physically all the time but my motivation was two-fold. A) my weight keeps going up and I am quite a busy person so I wondered if M was influencing my weight. I like food but I am not a couch-potatoe burger eating maniac. B) my legs felt very stiff and I wondered if it was age (54) or weight or M! I have none of the anxiety or issues a lot of people report on here. Life on M was pretty straight forward. And still is.
I took my BP regularly during the first month. it was very good. With excellent pulse results of 60/61/67. I practiced the Dr Batman Water Cure and also took magnesium and apple cider vinegar.
I sometimes 'fall off the bus' with my natural cures and don't always take them as regularly as I should or drink as much water as i should for my weight and I need to get a grip on that. And might have lost focus during the second month, which could be the reason I report the following:
In the two months I have only felt "strange" once over a period of 3 days where I was either having palpitations or my heart was simply beating louder and I was very aware of it. I wonder if it was eating chocolate again and eating more carbs - having cut back on carbs at the same time as cutting my daily dosage in half. My BP went up and I wasn't so content with my experiment. But I occasionally had the same experience whilst on M full dose!!! So it is very difficult to be sure especially when one doesn't pay that much attention to the little hiccups we all experience from time to time.
I am determined to continue weaning slowly. I will focus more on my sea sake intake/magnesium/apple cider vinegar. One improvement seems that my legs feel "lighter". I feel less stiff.
I really must walk more. I feel stiff walking. Could be my weight.
My experience seems very much easier than a lot of other people's, for which I am very glad. I find reading everyone's individual experience most helpful.
I'll keep going but with a sharper focus re the natural things we are all talking about on here. Plus my water intake. I need to sharpen my walking and my gym session too. Also I must take more note of what my body is saying and if it is related to food in anyway.
I will update in 2 months.
I too was put on it for afib but that was before my ablation after my ablation I thought they would take me off..but after years of being on it only went back into afib once an they added cardezim. Side affects is awful sob depressed tired hair loss weight gain sire muscles.. so I tried to when off and my anxiety to wen up the roof heart races sob palpation can't sleep so they put me on celexa. I only kept on that crap for two weeks ...I hate I ever started this medicine I pray that I will be off soon right now only taking 25ng a day... but when I go to my check ups and my pulse is high upon excretion they tell me too up my dose to control my heart rate heck no I aint...I have to start walking to build up my resistance an control my rate because I haven't been able to do anything but walk a link without getting sob but NY o2 stat reads normal but it feels like I can't get enough air in...I hope an pray for us all...they give us that to control rate an blood pressure but then put u on a blood thinner because they don't tell ubthe med effects the way your blood flows...then another to take care of another side affect and so on....thus is pure hell....any supplement suggestions for the palpitions and know enrgy
I've hit a snag. I've gotten down to 25mg which is 25% of my origional dose but my blood pressure is up a little and I have started having migraines again. Not sure what to do. I thought I might take a tiny step back to 50mg. to see if this helps, but I hate to back track. Ugh.
Be careful Racesien, That happened to me and all the time the doctor thought it was just the withdrawal until I finally got so out of breath to where I couldn't walk across the room without sitting down. I was taken to ER and I had four blood clots on my lungs.
your welcome Jimbo but don't forget first look into the L Arginine .. Ask someone at your health food store .. but let me ask you first do you have any issues with your heart? Don't forget to tell the person at the health food store what drugs you are on as some natural things interact with pharma drugs.. sorry I forgot to mention that... I didn't know either this drug would totally keep me mostly in the house for a whole year while I was getting off.. If I would go out I would experience horrific side effects so I kept inside more..My heart would race for no reason I would feel really sick.... oh; and I haven't had one palpitation in months since getting off this drug... The (M) was giving me palpitations and I never had one heart problem. I did have high blood pressure but I needed to lose weight and change my lifestyle and diet but right away I was given the drug before I had the chance to change my habits.... I don't blame you for being angry.. I was pretty mad for a long time and thought that I was stuck.. The doctors didn't even want to help me get off the drug so I had to do my own research...I was one of those people that was highly allergic to the drug so it was harder for me to get off.... there were days I couldn't even walk or shop or anything and I have only me to rely on so I know exactly how you feel...
Jimbo.. you might be getting off too quickly .. It took me a year to get off this stuff.. and since I was highly allergic I couldn't just cut the pills so what I did was at first extend the time I took the first pill.. so say I took my first dose at 9 am I would then extend that time to 9:30 am and then maybe a few days later 10 am.. and then remain on a dose until I felt more stable.. when I felt stable I cut the dose but that might have taken me three months to be on one dose.. after all of that I still had horrific side effects............there are some amino acids you can take now. Just check the interactions.. I know I took L theanine when I was on (M) and Taurine and you can check the L Arginine. The L theanine helps with the adrenal rushes and stress and anxiety.. you can also take a tablespoon of unsulphered organic black strap molasses as it can stop racing heart or magnesium.. Motherwort is another herb that calms the palpitations..
