Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 34)
(Newest replies first)
Updated
i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Met killed my stomach as well and my esphogus. I took zantac 2x a day and had to go on a very bland diet. I lived on toast, applesauce, rice , cereal and bananas. I was worried I’d never be able to eat normally again. I’ve been off of it a month and am just starting to feel normal. I also am take coq10. Hope you feel better
My last post was #1868. I had just come off Metrop and thought things were going to be not bad. Boy was I wrong! This has been the toughest two months and I am wondering if it will ever get better. I was able to solve the heart palps by using CoQ10. Worked like a charm. Have also added Magnesium. My biggest problem is a very sick stomach. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this and any suggestions on what might help. Very debilitating. Suffer greatly from dizziness as well. This site has been of great help and encouragement so just want to thank everyone for their input. This drug is terrible for some of us. I understand that for some it has helped - everyone is different. But many suffer and suffer bad.
Re: Peggy (# 1881)
Finally off metropolol. Horrid medicine. I’ll never take it again
Re: Peggy (# 1881)
Thanks Peggy. How goes your weaning? Did the 6 mg keep going ok? How about then going to 0 mg?
I’ve been doing better, went to 5 mg at the end of March and today 4.5 mg. Taking it beyond slow but I don’t want to experience any more episodes. I realized soon after my last post and two more episodes that too much sugar, flour or pasta precede the episodes. Not sure now if the lower dose is triggering that or if I’m pre-diabetic but I’ll get blood work done very soon. I wonder if diet is a culprit for some on here. I’m now watching both sodium and sugar intake. No more soda or candy!
Feel free to update me and I’ll check back here in the coming days.
Re: Cyn (# 1890)
Hi Cyn. Sorry to hear your issues with this drug. Did your doctor offer to change your meds? I have no experience with herbs so can’t help there. If your dr doesn’t want to help I would get a second opinion
Re: Meg (# 341)
This helps because I’m 30 and been on metroprolol for 2 yrs it was prescribed for my arrhythmia and I hate it cause I been so fatigue since then, I’ve always had a more lower blood pressure and this meds make it even worse I want to get off of it yet my doctors says it’ll be years before it can ever happen ! I haven’t had an episode in a yr so I’m hoping I can start going down on my dosage .I want to try motherwort but don’t know how to start
Re: Peggy (# 1888)
Also read this thread. Excellent advise from many who have been through this
Re: Jack (# 1887)
I believe everyone’s different but I would encourage you to taper. I take it for svt and stopped suddenly after 3 months and had horrible anxiety and some palpitations. My BP was ok. I takes a few days to notice the effect. I cut my 12.5 on half. I’ve done this all week. I’m stopping tomorrow so we will see what happens. Good luck. Talk to your doctor

I've been taking 12.5 for about a year-and-a-half to two years. But I want to get off this stuff. I'm happy to hear your effects are not quite as bad? I worry about having a bad reaction. I've gotten much more physically active and have always had a great diet. So I really shouldn't have any issues getting off this right? Thanks so much for your help.
Alx (# 1884) --
Thx much. I will be careful. Just cant deal with the anxiety. My dr gave me Xanax and all it does is make me sleep. I just wan to be normal again
Re: Peggy (# 1883)
Had some crazy high anxiety the first few days. Now it's normalized/better. I'm gonna wait till the 30th before i stop the 6 mg and see what happens. That would be 2 weeks of 6 mg. Keep in mind that it may be rough the 1st few days when you stop what is left.
Re: Peggy (# 1883)
I get high anxiety & depression. Taking L-Theanine (200mg), Magnesium (75mg) and Valerian root (500mg) as needed. When walking around the house my heart rate sometimes goes to 140 easy but that is normal while weaning. I know that i'm not in the clear yet and it can get bad so taking it one step at a time.
Re: Alex (# 1878)
How is the weaning going? I was down to 12.5 and skipped 2 days and had horrible days. I went back to 12.5 and will cut to 6 tomorrow.
Re: Peggy (# 1881)
I have learned from a pharmacist that the issue with going if this drug is anxiety. Your body gets use to it to control anxiety. When you try to get off completely and have any anxiety issues you will suffer. Interesting.
Re: Alex (# 1878)
I feel the same way. I’ve never felt this way in my life. I’ll never take this med again.
Re: Bubba (# 1879)
Hope you get good results. Today is the first day I’ve skipped a dose. I’m hoping tonight is kind to me. Thx for responding
Peg (# 1876) --
Hi Peg, very sorry to hear of your troubles. Unfortunately I spoke too soon and had more trouble the very same evening I posted my message. Going from 8 mg to 4 mg was too drastic. Had very high BP that night and woke up in the middle of that night with fast pulse for maybe 5 minutes. From what I've seen others describe on this thread, it takes a few days after lowering the dosage for the bad effects to manifest. So I decided the very next day to go up to 6 mg and have felt better. I'm still having some spikes in BP and pulse but nowhere near as bad. It looks like it takes a while (a couple weeks? not sure yet) to acclimate to the new lower dosage and the bad effects gradually get better (too gradually, it's horrible!). I'm going to remain at 6 mg for another week or until I feel better, then drop real slow. Thankfully I have a better scale that can measure to nearest mg, so I can choose the dosage! They really need to provide smaller mg pills and warn people to wean slowly. This stuff is toxic and leaves a mark on the body's many processes even though the drug is out of the system in x hours or days. My cardiologist just laughed that it's probably a placebo effect but I'm not buying it. Maybe some can go cold turkey but not everybody. Unfortunately the companies only want to make money with their large dosage 100/50/25 mg pills, their goal is for people to remain on their meds indefinitely.
Good luck and I hope you feel better.
My last post did not went trough so again: Last night my anxiety was high and i took some l-theanine. Had some rebound high blood pressure, slight increase heart rate. currently taking 6 mg metoprolol. When i tried to wean off on the 1st try I had a rebound tachycardia of 180. It was a sinus tachycardia. I get depressed and sometimes think that my end is coming. I'm always expecting something bad to happen in other words expect the worst and hope for the best. Also taking magnesium ,around 400 mg in the form of pills, broccoli and shakes.
Last night my anxiety was high, I took some l-theanine. currently taking 6 mg metoprolol but I have a feeling that i'm gonna have a bad time soon. I also had some rebound high blood pressure last night. It's hard to stay positive after the 180 sinus tachycardia. I got the green light from cardio to wean off of it. In case you are wondering the 180 tachy happened on the 1st try from weaning. Somehow things are looking better now but after that experience its hard to forget.
Re: Joyce (# 235)
I have had the same craving since being put on Metoprolol. Prior to being on it, I ate mostly vegetarian with some fish several days a week, for the past few years. I have been craving red meat and eating it daily for the past two weeks. Have only been on Metoprolol for 2 months and thought the side effects were symptoms of illness, didn't realize they were side effects until this weekend. Now trying to taper off and symptoms are much worse. Palpitations, headaches off and on (instead of daily and constant), anxiety, depression and all the things everyone is saying here. My doctor completely dismissed all my complaints about symptoms and basically said I didn't understand how my body would respond to medicines and it takes a while to adjust, etc., blah, blah. I wish I would have realized sooner and started the tapering process much sooner. Seeing a new cardio doc tomorrow and continuing to taper until I'm over this terrible ordeal.
