Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 14) (Top voted first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

I have felt almost normal today for the first time in a LONG time. That weird buzzing and tension in my body has let go, what a difference! Able to breathe easy and think pretty clearly. Crossing my fingers that this is the beginning of the end of the misery. Check up with doc tomorrow. No being woken up by pounding or palpitations this am. Hopefully will wake up tomorrow am refreshed and clear.

Wow! It's sounding as though a few of you are beginning to break free of the Metoprolol grip! That's great to hear! Once you have a fairly good day here and there, you'll find them occurring much more frequently as the days pass by.

For those asking about L-Theanine, I found it to be a very mild anxiety-reducing supplement at best. It certainly doesn't have the kind of 'kick' that Xanax or other similar drugs might have, but I did find that it took the edge off just a wee bit. It's probably better than nothing, but as Justme has stated, taking drugs such as Xanax only opens another potentially serious problem if one isn't careful. Why is it that the vast majority of doctors are so eager to prescribe drugs that essentially mask the problem at hand? Frankly, this bugs the crap out of me. For a guy who's about to turn 62, I'm just very thankful that I'm no longer on any prescription drugs whatsoever.

Anyway, just hang in there everybody! The good days are just around the corner!

My heart rate is high today. Its 73 degrees here today so I sat outside and the heat from the sun made my heart race. Wth? Anyone else have this going on? Sound like withdrawal?

Don't give up now ! You are almost to the edge of the woods! That's a HUGE dose. Try and be patient. Your POOR system!!! Do try the tincture, it will help control some of those awful symptoms. Really good natural herbs in there :)
Stay strong, you CAN be free of this poison! !

Hey JR...February 20th was 2 months for me. I keep praying that it goes away by the end of March. We have to remember how far we've come and that it will get better...that is what keeps me going.

I hope everyone starts to feel better. I think the worst part is the constant yo-yo effect and feeling good for a bit and then wham back to feeling like crap. Prayers for all.

I am making very small improvements each day with setbacks here and there. Anxiety is still very prevalent but I am going to keep fighting it. I guess I will be one of those people that gradually come out of it which sucks. Prayers for all.

I'm doing really well....its been almost 4 months and I must say I feel soooo much better! I know if you guys keep on going you'll be fine! My blood pressure within the last two weeks has come down lower than it ever was on that nasty M. I am totally convinced the stuff is toxic and I don't mean for everybody but for all of us it screams toxic or allergy. I read your posts everyday but I feel bad cause all of you are still hurting but I know it will get better and I think it just depends on your system how long it will take. Somebody on here said she didn't feel completely normal until about a year. That just goes to show you that it's different for all. Don't expect your Docs to understand and we really don't need them to understand because we know what we know. I feel so bad when somebody says they feel dizzy cause I remember that feeling but the worse for me was that crazy pshyco feeling that everybody was out to get me! It was awful! I couldn't trust anybody geeez awful stuff!!! I'll keep on watching and praying for all of you! Heal on my friends someday this will just be a distant memory.????

I was on metoprolol succ er 200 mg for 15 years. I had so many side effects and hospital visits with no reasons for health problems, even told it was in my head. Then I found the internet. I am 56 yrs old and have been weening down over a 4 yr period as i lost 80 pounds. When i got below 50 mg in the last 2yrs the withdraws that my doctor said didnt exist had gotten worse than the withdraws. From 40mg oxycontins from failed back fusion. Once i got to 25mg you can die of withdraws.. I had to make my doctor start me on different blood pressure medicine. Remember these side effects are an allergic reaction to medicine. You have to see an allergy doctor. Bad side effects from medicine dont come up in normal blood work and most doctors wont tell you that. It took me being sick for 15 yrs to finally picking up a computer and getting the answers on the net. I thank the people that made that post for me to see an allergy doctor. This is my first computer post. I hope someone hears me. I have seven grand chrildren that has a grand father back on his feet. These withdraws are no joke. Thank you.

Oh for sure Sandra....my heart rate does that also but if you keep track you will see it just drops a bit more every one or 2 weeks if you continue to push yourself. I think it's our hearts trying to just readjust. I'm willing to bet that a few months ago you weren't even able to think about helping with yard work? Mine still raises here and there but I know it's gonna get better.

Allison- if you were on 12.5 mgs you might have it easier than most of us . They had me on 200mgs for 10 months. But the most common things are lightheadedness , anxiety, palpitations, tremors in the beginning and others but your on a realy low dose so you may experience alot less than alot of us

50mgs right out of the gate, even a pharmacist said "why did she put you on this first"? I had two high blood pressure readings within a month and feared a stroke, now I am dealing with drug withdrawal! Tomorrow will be 6 weeks no metoprolol and I have headaches daily, not a pounding headache just a dull pain. Trying not to take anything for it but want it to stop soon! Staying away from the Doc as long as I can!

Hey Kefir Kid! Thanks for the nice comment in your post! It's greatly appreciated! I have to wonder, though, is there any alternative to lowering your BP and HR with something other than a beta blocker? I just know that I could never go on metoprolol again after all I've been through, regardless of how things go.

It's interesting that you mention that metoprolol is often used by musicians and performers as well as those in the professional world, for not only do I work as an engineer in a rather high-stress world, but I'm also a semi-pro musician that once played professionally at one time. In fact, when I was diagnosed with borderline hypertension, my primary doctor actually prescribed metoprolol not only to bring my BP down, but to help calm my nerves when performing, too......not that I really needed it for that reason. Long story short, I started taking 25mg of the drug on an "as-needed" basis, but I eventually found that after a few weeks I needed to take it twice daily in order to keep my system from going out of control. I literally became addicted while realizing I never needed to use the drug in the first place. Once my BP and HR came down after losing about 30 pounds, I quickly realized that I needed to get off the drug as quickly as possible. This is when all hell broke loose, and it became the worst nightmare of my life. I am by no means trying to persuade you to think twice about it if you feel that you really need it, but I know for a fact that my system could never tolerate it again. If you're anything like me, I'd sincerely consider another alternative if at all possible. Just my two pennies......

Kefir, I hope all goes well for you! I've been doing ok. My last dose of metoprolol was last June, and by the end of July I was finally feeling somewhat back to normal again. Although, I still get little bouts of anxiety and heart palps on occasion, but they're nothing serious. It just makes for a constant reminder of how the drug fouled up my system.

It seems that many folks who used to be here have moved on. I'm guessing it's because they've recovered and likely lost interest. I've been worried about Tony, though, for it seemed as though he was having some rather serious issues when he posted here last, and we haven't heard from him since. I hope he's doing ok.
