i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
I have been on Metoprolol for just 3 weeks, today my Dr. switched me to Cardizem because I couldn't deal with the Metoprolol side effects i.e. headachs & fatique.
Does anyone know how long the Metoprolol side effects will last after stopping? This stuff made me feel like I had not slept for a week&felt hung over all the time
u really think so
I was on Metoprolol for 4 years and quit cold turkey. It has been 3 weeks now. I feel a little better. My heart felt like it was going to jump out of me. I am real short of breath. Blood presure is good but I am weak and found out this morning that my heart is skipping 4 beats every minute.Got to get an appointment with doctor as soon as possible.
OMG! I am going through the same thing!! I was on Metoprolol for over 2 years my doctor took me off it I have been off for a month now but I still get plapatations I feel weak my heart feels like its beating to slow!! I don't know what to do! any answers??
I have been off of it two weeks now and still same short of breath, fast heart beat, but ifEEUN I went back to the doctor he would want me to go back on it. I talked to him on the phone. No way after two weeks. There should be something to take for withdrawal.
I've started the withdrawal process from metoprolol. I've been taking 50 mgs for the last 1 1/2 years. I decided to go off it with my doctor overseeing the process. I'm currently down to 25 mg and in a week the doctor wants me to stop cold turkey. Metoprolol has been a debilitating medication for me because I've had headaches, achy joints, dizziness, anxiety attacks, depression, heart palpitations, pain in my wrist and difficulty sleeping because of this drug. The withdrawal from this drug is difficult and is causing anxiety, headaches, heart palpitations, but I will struggle through them as I don't want to be on this drug anymore. Anyone withdrawing from this drug needs to make sure they do it under their physicians care.
Toni, I was only on 12.5 mg. and I did wean off for five or six days at half of this dosage and then every other day the next week, even though my doctor told me to quit cold turkey. I had read enough to know you were supposed to wean off. I still have shortness of breath and swelling of the ankles and legs. I was on this for about six-seven months. I just wonder if it takes that long for it to get out of your system. I am really scared that I shall never by normal again.KETXL
Watch out. I quit sleeping, experienced short term memory loss. But thought I was getting better, before I experienced shortness of breath, extreme pressure in my chest and rapid heart rate. I had to be transported by ambulance. Don't wait keep your doctor in the loop. A Dr. in ER suggested going back on the medication which I via-mutely declined. After more research, I found that that was a good idea to go back on the medication at a low dose and slowly get weened off of the medication. Don't mess around with this drug and keep your Dr. in the loop. Good luck!
I like all the rest of you, quit Metoprolol cold turkey five days ago. My heart rate is around 100 and I am very short of breath. How long is this going to last and what can be done to make it easier?
I have been off Metoprolol six weeks and still have shortness of breath, swelling of ankles, etc. I just wonder if they will ever go away or if, as I read, this RX has caused the RX induced Lupus in me. I had a bone marrow this week and cannot hear full results until the 19th. I was on 12.5 and would appreciate hearing from someone as to how long the side effects hang around after you discontinue. I hate to think the rest of my life is going to be like this all because of a poisonous RX I should never have been given.
I just got home from the hospital after being taken off metoprolol 7 days. The side effects seem to have finally subsided. I was taken off metoprolol last Thursday abruptly after taking this medication for 2 months. My heart rate was so rapid I could not sleep on Friday night. I kept the phone next to me, in case I needed to call 911. I woke up Saturday morning, my short term memory was not working right. In conversation, I would forget what I said before the other person could answer, and they would have to tell me what I had said. Very frustrating. I was feeling better by the afternoon. Rapid pounding heart rate seemed to be improving, but still not able to sleep. I did call my Dr. on Monday, and she told me to continue on my meds. On Tuesday, I went on a short walk. My heart started pounding. I had shortness of breath and lots of pressure in my chest. Needless to say, I got am ambulance ride to the hospital, a nitro pill and aspirin. I spent 2 days in the hospital while they ran tests, but the rapid heart rate went away, and all my tests were normal. I am feeling fine now and hoping the symptoms are over after a lousy 7 days!!
Hi Judy-wondering how long it ended up taking before the side effects went away? I was on 25mg, weaned down to 12.5, then every other day, then every third day to now-I have been completely off for 7days now. Yesterday I felt good and today I feel horrible again-dizzy, light headed, heart palpatations, nauseous. I'm hoping I'm thru the hardest but would love to know how much longer to expect. Any info would be appreciated!
I feel exactly the same. I will never take this s*** again... I am the 2nd day off. I have palpitations, and my heart rate did not go below 90. Each move makes me even worse. Other symptoms are shortening of breath and chest burning (today a bit smaller)
After 10 months on Metoprolol following a Lone Afib I had a Lipid profile done and my Triglycerides went from always in the 80's to 355.That was one year ago and two profiles since,201 and recently 316.Is anyone familiar with any negative impact on blood fats by taking Metoprolol?

Does anyone know how long side effects last after coming off Metoprolol 12.5 with gradual weaning to 6. for a week and to every other day for a couple of days?I had almost every side effect listed and some have disappeared, but shortness of breath is still prevalent and anxiety after waking at 4:30 am to almost having panic attact happened last night. I have been competely off about 4 or 5 days.
I have been taking 100mg of Metropolol since 2000 - thats right TWELVE YEARS and after reading this blog I am convinced that I have almost every symntom discussed. Two days ago I came off cold turkey - been rough two days but my shortness of breath and dizziness is already100% improved. This medication should be removed from the market.
I just wished I was never put on this drug it's been a real blight on my life I even lost two good jobs, it seems to me if your withdrawing from coke or heroin theirs plenty of help out their yet to me beta blocker withdraw is just as difficult to get off for meny people.
I have been on lopressor two weeks 25 mg twice a day

I was metoprolol 10 years ago and for last 5 years due to contracting asmur have been trying to get off this drug with may I say not help from medical profession.I was told by some doctors just to stop and go cold turkey which led to umpteen trips to A and E the side affects where horrid ,160 hr, the shakes, sweating, high bp,hot flushes I felt like I was going to die I also tried umteen times to wean off slowly but my body had become dependent on this drug and I thought I would have to take this drug forever. Then one of the doctors at the hospital put me on a new drug called ivebradine and weaned me slowly of metoprolol over 3 weeks. It's early days but I've been of metoprolol for two weeks and had no side affects from the ivebradine I hope this helps.
