Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 126)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

It appears to me having gone off of LOPRESSOR 2 different times it REALLY does effect your vision and balance. I will also note that I went on the medication at 100 mg in 1990 and within a couple of weeks I went from weighing appx. 100 lbs. to 150.

I suffer from Gastroparesis. I have found LOPRESSOR does help with the nausea for some reason ... Anxiety relief ...

I will simply say it IS so very difficult to quit.

I believe from my reading here I have been on LOPRESSOR longer than anyone.

Also, there IS a Major difference if the pharmacy changes your generic... The Blue pill has Always been fine for me BUT ,,,IF it is changed to the White tablet it Doesn't work & I had to specify...

This is Tasha again ... Still no better... It has been about 2 months now. Heart rate always over 100,,, Confused & vision problems. Unstable on my feet & have collapsed as I did the previous time I went off of it, Believe me though due to my Essential Tremor & now after having been on it since 1990 @ 100 mg - 200 mg a day I would Surely welcome having it again, withdrawal is hell ... But, sometimes you do Need certain medications...Unfortunately for me this is one & I can no longer
obtain it being out of The States... Sad @ times to be out of the country & away from our medical system. People talk about the medical system in Canada...Don't believe it. In general Drs. don't accept patients.

Hi Guys! Sorry just seeing the replies. I been off the awful med since June 6th. The doc told me just to stop the metoprolol. OMG the first 2 weeks were the worst. I was so dizzy and weak it was unbearable. I was having horrible body aches I could barely get out of bed. I seriously thought I was going to be stuck feeling like that forever.
BUT It is so true that you start feeling better a little everyday. After the first 2 weeks off I started getting more energy. The dizziness comes and goes now.. it was a 24/7 ordeal before. I was even dizzy laying down. That medication also caused me severe anxiety.Seems like it is very common for medication like this to bring anxiety on. So I really feel some of us are having an ongoing anxiety issue (which causes some awful symptoms) from the medication more than withdraw after a certain point. Just my thoughts :-/
I also started a supplement called Intramax. Which helps rid toxins from the body. It has also greatly helped me.
This has been the worst thing I have ever when through :-( I just pray that all of you start feeling better also. I do not recommend just coming off metro cold turkey but get off anyway you can!

TRACY- Read my comments, hope it will help. I don't understand why some Dr.'s always advise to simply stop taking this horrible medication. You MUST WEAN OFF slowly to avoid these withdrawal symptoms from hell.

I was put on metoprolol er 25 one time by a doctor at the ER because of rapid heart rate. After a few days on this medicine I was having dizzy spells, severe anxiety, blurred vision, and fatigue. Doctors told me to stay on metoprolol and it will get better. Well 5 weeks later I was barely functioning. The cardiologist said my heart is fine and the rapid heart rate was due to a virus I had and to get off the metoprolol. I been off for 5 days now and feel just awful. I am having very bad dizzy spells that last a long time, blurred vision, bad fatigue, and trouble concentrating. This is just awful.... I don't know what to do ... Will I ever feel ok again?

From everything I have researched and advised by more than one Dr. - you should NEVER just stop taking Metoprolol abruptly. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS! The withdrawl can be so severe you may end up in hospital or worse!
Even if you are told to discontinue the meds, you must wean off within a 2-3 week period for best results and less withdrawl symptoms.
This is what our Dr. advised to do:
Cut the daily dose (50 mg.) in half (to 25 mg.) and remain taking it like that for a week. If you are successful, then cut the half dose in half (to 12.5 mg.) for another week. If you are successful with that week, then the quarter dose should also be cut in half for week 3 (went to 6 mg.).
*PLEASE NOTE* Our Dr. did NOT advise the following, but I felt it was necessary as my son is very sensitive to medicine in general.
Week 4, just a small crack off a quarter of a 25 mg. pill once a day. After that, we discontinued it altogether. Wanted to ensure his success with the least withdrawl symptoms as possible. He's doing well so far and with God's loving care, I expect him to fully recover from taking this medication from hell within a month or so.

You will feel more like yourself with each passing day once off Metoprolol. Don't give up. I have read that sometimes it takes months - but everyone is different. I'm under the impression that the higher the dose and longer duration taken on a regular basis is key in all of this. The good news is you don't have to suffer because of it anymore!
Son was on this medication from hell for 2 months. Began at 50 mg. per day. Condition resolved. MD took him off and we slowly weaned each week down to 6 mg. (and less even though a dose that low is considered homeopathic). Wanted to do that just to ensure success. He is not quite himself yet... has some "withdraw" symptoms but for the most part, side effects are gone. So thankful.

This medication is poison. I was on Metoprolol tartrate 50mg twice a day for 8 days. The worst 8 days of my life. Bronchial constriction, insomnia, a weak left arm, multiple spinal osteoarthritis flare ups as well as a feeling of doom. The brand I was on is GenRx. 2 trips to the ER for chest pains. Have taken myself off this rubbish but still have back pain and arm weakness. I'd like to sue whom ever made this medication. I only had high blood pressure and ectopic beats beforehand. No arthritis symptoms before Metoprolol. I thought medication was meant to help, not hinder.

It has been 9 weeks now sense I quit Metoprolol. I am still not myself. My heart is still raceing. I am still weak.
I don't think I will ever be back to normal.

My Dr. prescribed metro polo and I found out that my breathing problems were a result of this drug. It shouldn't be taken if you have asthma, which my Dr. is well aware of. Changed Dr.'s immediately.

I was on Metopolol for about a year and a half and stopped it this past winter after having all the terrible side effects it produces or can produce, including shortness of breath, sore tongue, hallucinations, etc. etc.and then I was sent to hematologist-oncologist who diagnosed me with a rare disease called Amyloidosis-anybody else on Metoprolol come away with this diagnosis. I have been to Mayo and it confirmed and I start treatment this next week.

I have been on Lopressor for 23 years for an Essential Tremor. Initially 100 mg.
I was increased to 200 mg. after 6 years. I experienced convulsions upon the increase so what I did was as opposed to taking 2 a day I took the it 6 hrs. early each day which worked well. When I initially went on it in a period of wks. I went from weighing 100 lbs. to 155 lbs.
It took me 2 years to lose that weight. It has worked very well for me & now that I am in my 50's I am also using it for heart & B.P. issues. Now, I am living out of the States & have abruptly had to discontinue my meds.
I have been off of Lopressor now for one week. I had cut myself down to 50 mg. a day for an extended period as I knew I was running out of my pills. My heart rate is running between 109 to 121. My B.P. Systolic 145-161.
I had a period of syncope , trembling, achy, very disoriented. Tingling & shaking. Heart Rate dropped to 49 once I could take it after the episode B.P. was 92/53 . It is very strange. I have had to abruptly stop it 2 times before for only a few days and always after a wk. this is what happens. It is difficult to even walk due to the shaking & trembling...Feeling dizzy.

After going off this med due to severe joint pain, I experienced pins and needles and tingling in my legs and arms, plus a racing irregular heartbeat. After being off a week (yes i weaned slowly off it) ..i took a half of a 50 mg this morning to see if i could calm my pulse rate down. This med was toxic to me.

WOW 100% improved? Did your MD replace the Metoprolol with another med or have you been totally med free?

I hope by now your withdrawl symptoms have subsided. Have taken for a month. Successfully weaned from 50 mg. per day ( 25 mg. morning/25 mg. night ) Now weaning from 25 ( 12.5 twice a day ) to 12.5 in the morning only. I just pray it won't be a lengthy process. The side effects are horrible and episodes of anxiety and night terrors are really really devastating. My son has been going through that. I have taken to sleeping in his room - as the sooner I can calm him the sooner it goes away. The first time, I heard his outcry and ran into his room. He was shaking all over, pale, terrified. We thought it was a seizure but now that I've been in the room I calm him immediately and it goes away with no shaking. BUT just as everyone else here... there are other other side effects when weaning off. A state of not feeling well, tiredness, unable to function normally. THIS IS THE MEDICATION FROM HELL.
