Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 119)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Re: Juliya (# 2360) Expand Referenced Message

What other symptoms are you having in your waves, juliya?

I’m having a horrible night and trying not to go to the ER. But my chest is pounding and HR is at 130. I hate this so much. I’m so frustrated. I took 1/4 channel blocker to try to calm it down so I can go to sleep. It’s 3:30am here and laying in bed with a pounding 130 HR is no fun. I’m trying not to panic.

How have you been RV?

I am doing okay have high heart rate sometimes while doing nothing body probably taking time to adjust . Day before yesterday to experiment i tried to run at my full speed for 90 odd seconds and my hr jumped to 200 bpm i hate myself for taking metoprolol. I also cannot sit still for like 2 hours my body needs to lay down for sometime every few mins to keep my hr low. Apart from palps do you feel any weird sensations around heart i feel weird around my left shoulder area .

Juliya - What have your symptoms been?

RV- I’m doing ok, just dealing with the daily bouts of sinus tach. Like you my HR just jumps up doing normal every day activities. I’m so sick of it. I have my appt with the new cardio tomorrow but I don’t know how much is really going to get addressed since it’s the first initial visit. All I know is I’m so tired of these symptoms and high heart rates. I just want it to stop.

How have you been feeling?

Same old, same old. High blood sugars, anxiety, panic attacks, headache, insomnia, PVCs, reflux, chest pain. The dizziness has went away so that’s a plus. I hope you have a good visit with cardio tomorrow. Please keep us posted! ??

I have nausea , high resting rate , acid reflux and today for a minute my hr jumped to 185bpm and came back down to 110 within 60 seconds wondering if this is also normal or should i go see a doctor! 3rd week of your wave i really admire your courage ! Are you working out to train your heart? I have lost muscle mass in last 6 months

Re: Txcandy1 (# 2367) Expand Referenced Message

Exactly like i was just brushing my teeth and i thought let me check my heart rate and boom 125bpm a year i’d brisk walk and my hr would reach 100 bpm tops. Today a few hours ago it went up to 185bpm for a few seconds . I am 76 days off metoprolol now wondering when will this stop. All the best for your appointment

Yup that sounds like me. I’m currently waiting for the new cardio now: I’m kinda nervous and I don’t know why. I’m just so frustrated with all this.

I’m 285 days off!!!! And still dealing with all this and I don’t know if it’s the damn effects of the pill or something wrong. This is all just so ridiculous. I want a solution. :(

Exactly the after effects of quitting are so brutal that its difficult to think gauge if its
A) anxiety
B) withdrawal effects
C) something is totally wrong

Let us know how the appointment went.

Re: RV (# 2374) Expand Referenced Message

Ok so I think I’m going to stay with this EP. he was super engaging and listened and has a plan of action. He’s also going to request all my records from current ep and also have me come into his clinic to connect to my loop recorder: but based on our convo he thinks I have IST.

Plan of action is to take a low dose of ivabradine to recondition my sinus node to reset at a lower rate and also work on re conditioning the heart with low cardio to reset the sinus node. Take the smallest dose and cut in half still. I did some quick research on ivabradine and came across this which seems promising. I would eventually wean off and hopefully the sinus node would have reset.

Ivabradine In IST
Several small reports — often describing one or two patients — began appearing soon after the drug came into clinical use, suggesting that ivabradine might be useful in treating patients with IST. Then, in 2012, a well-designed randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was reported in Italy, which concluded that ivabradine may indeed be uniquely effective for this condition. IST patients randomized to ivabradine showed about a 70% reduction in symptoms, and approximately 50% of treated patients reported the immediate and complete resolution of symptoms. Side effects were minimal. Compared to what is typically seen with other medical treatments used for IST, such a result is indeed striking.4??

In 2013, a non-randomized trial with ivabradine in 24 patients with IST showed similar favorable outcomes. In this trial, however, the drug was stopped in 10 patients after one year to see what would happen (the other patients refused to stop taking the drug), and 8 of these 10 these patients had no recurrence of IST.5??

So IST should show up on ecg right? Or it doesnt ? How long are you planning to take this med? Are there any side effects like metoprolol had? did he say anything else apart from IST?

Oh that’s amazing!!!! It’s an expensive medication though! They tried switching me from metoprolol to that but my insurance wouldn’t cover it. It was $1,500.00 for a 90 day supply. So I had to opt out. It was way too expensive!

Re: Juliya (# 2377) Expand Referenced Message

Ugh I’m hoping they’ll approve it. I did see where it was 600.00 for the 60 pills he prescribed on the Walgreens summary but he’s not ready so I don’t know if my insurance has approved it yet. He said for me to cut the pill in half so maybe the pills will last longer. I hope they approve it as it does seem promising.

I have to go to his office to so they can link up to my loop recorder and then fill out a disclosure to have them get all my medical records from previous EP. He seems way more engaged to help figure this out and help me feel better: the other EP way more like you’re fine, see you in 4 months. Clearly living with a high heart rate is not fine nor does it feel good.

Hoping this works

How are you guys feeling today?

I’m still kind of nervous to start a new drug after the beta blocker but after reading and researching ivabradine seems to be ok

Re: RV (# 2376) Expand Referenced Message

IST doesn’t show up on an ecg. It’s a normal sinus rhythm just tachycardia. So besides the sinus tach ecg is normal. Its not a rhythm change.

I read most people take the medication for about 6 months to a year and then wean off to see if the sinus node has reset.

Ivabradine has little to no side effects which is the great thing about it. It directly only effects the sinus node to chill out. I’ve asked quite a few people in a group for SVT and all said they had no side effects and it’s really reduced their heart rate. They haven’t Weened off yet. Like juliya said it’s a very expensive drug and most insurance denies it but fortunately mine just approved it for one year.

Today when I was working ( not a strenuous job, I photograph newborns) my heart rate was 155. So ridiculous. I’m really hoping this med helps and doesn’t have side effects.

He is pulling all my records from the other ep so he’ll take a look and see if I have SVT. I don’t know if they’ve actually caught an episode or if I even have it. He also needs to connect to my loop recorder.

Did anyone of you had GI issues after starting/stopping metoprolol?
