Medication For Back And Neck Pain
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I am 93 and have severe back and neck pain. I had back surgery 15 years ago after a back injury causing back and leg pain. After surgery, the leg pain went away but I still suffer from lower back pain. For a long time I would see the doctor who did my surgery every six months and he would give me a mega shot of cortisone on each side of my lower back which helped the back pain. Since then we moved to Orlando about 130 miles away from the doctor, but now I do not drive since I use a walker. My family doctor has given me hydrocodone-acetaminophen 5/325 and it helps some. I also sometimes take tylenol. Is it safe to take it with the other medication? Thanks for any help you can give me.

It can increase the side effects of each medication taking them together so it's best if you take them several hours apart.

Let me explain in detail why it works. The spine is made up of 32 vertebrae connected by 3 joints to adjacent vertebra. Connecting the vertebras are millions of ligaments and muscle fibres. Any one of these joints, ligaments, muscle fibres can become dysfunctional causing pain. Current treatment wether surgical or pain relief are abysmal. Surgical because it is impossible to identify the offending element, pain-relieving drugs because it deadens pain by deadening the CNS. The offending element usually causes swelling of the adjacent nerve. Acupuncture reduces this swelling removing pain. Because the neck is loaded with nerves, acupuncture is very effective for relieving neck pain. However pain in the rest of the body often originates from the neck too. For pain originating below the neck I find back exercises prescribed by Worksafe, British Columbia very effective, at least for me.

I would go to a pain specialist and tell him where your pain is and tell him the pain is a 10 level, which is the the worst amount of pain, and then ask him to put you on the 75mcg pain patch, you put it on your back or your forearm and you change it every three day's it's in your system 24/7

Hi. My name is Anjali. I feel that you are taking too much tylenol. Your doctor should change you to one of the morphine drugs, or methadone. The problem is trying to get a doctor to prescribe them for you. I suggest going to a pain clinic. I have Cerebral Palsy and spina bifida with scoliosis. I also have Lupus with all the trimmings-vasculitis, transverse myelitis, kidney failure, heart failure. I have a non-hodgekins lymphoma. I also cannot get adequate pain relief. I feel it is criminal that these are perfectly fine drugs for acute, chronic intractable pain. The doctors are allowing congress and Trump to use the "opiod crisis" to control what doctors prescribe for patients, when alcohol and tobacco which are legal kill many more people in this country. If I can't get morphine for my pain, then who can? It should be prescribed on a case-by-case basis. The rate of addiction amongst intractable pain survivors and cancer patients is almost nill. It is a political football. Monitored closely, these drugs save lives as pain kills. Try a pain clinic, and I wish you well.

The medication the doctor gave you already has Tylenol in it so it's kind of redundant. As long as you're not taking it constantly it should be okay. Tylenol can be hard on the liver in large doses but occasionally taking an added Tylenol should be okay. Rule of thumb is no more than 3000mgs. a day. That's a pretty hefty dose to take every day. Talk to your doctor when you go to see him again. Have you tried something like Aleve?

Why not treat your neck pain with acupuncture? If effective, could also relieve your neck pain.

Good day,

It sounds like you had a facet block for your back pain. One drug to stay away from, Lyrica! It does horrible damage to your brain and nerves. I have been on almost every painkiller made. I survived a head on collision. Stay away from internal (intrathecal) pain pumps. Also internal nerve stimulator. Tens units may help with the nerve/back pain. Don't do the OTC ones. If you're able, there are some great cannabis oils to be rubbed where the pain is. There's also some great tincture to add into any liquid you drink and edibles, everything from lollipops to salads. Feel free to write me back anytime. There are so many natural remedies that can help. I hope your pain lessens soon. {edited for privacy}.

Sorry to hear that u are not feeling so good.I had neck and arm surgery. Just watch using pain meds. What you're taking is not very strong. Have u done physical Therapy yet? That might help too. Good luck! Oh, if medication not working call your Doctor and see what he says.

Re: Verwon (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

I failed to mention that I also take a medication for anxiety. Is there any problem taking the pain medication Hydrocodone and Alprazalom?

Re: Verwon (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

Thanks for the advice about pain medication I am taking. I will just stay with the one my doctor gave me. I am not sure it is helping control the back pain. I will discuss it with my doctor next week.

No, you should not combine Tylenol with the Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen, since they both contain Acetaminophen as an active ingredient, which could result in an overdose.

The FDA warns that Hydrocodone carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?
