It is mainly the NALOXONE (not Naltrexone) that blocks opiate receptors if Suboxone is injected. If it is taken sublingually as prescribed, it is the Buprenorphine itself that does it. The availability of Naloxone is only 5% or less when taken under the tongue.

Yes, people seem to think that Subutex and Suboxone are so different because of the Naloxone. But it is the BUPE ITSELF that is doing the "blocking" when taken sublingually, because Buprenorphine is a partial opioid antagonist. Naloxone is in Suboxone to keep people from injecting it, that's all.

When we put things into our bodies, knowing how those things actually work is a GOOD thing! :)

Have you tried nerve blocks or ablation which is using extreme heat to kill certain nerves that are causing you problems. My father has arthritis in his back and so other disc problems and they did ablation procedures for him. I don't know if these are options for you or for where your pain is, but they are options you could ask about. I don't know what drug you and fireman were discussing but if it was suboxone, subutex, or Butrans (which are all bupernorphine) it is a narcotic. It is different than the typical ones you hear of. Most are full agonists but bupernorphine is a partial agonist which means it has only partial effectiveness to that receptor. So it works as an opioid but not as strongly as drugs such as morphine or oxycodone for example. Partial agonists cannot be taken at the same time as full agonists because they stop the full agonist from working that's why bupernorphine works for opioid dependence. If you try and take for example oxycodone with bupernorphine you won't feel anything from the oxycodone. Sorry for the long answer but I wanted to make sure you knew all the important facts. If you ever have any questions feel free to ask me. My name is Amy and obviously on here curious80.

8mg bid wouldve been a better dose for you. Why the rush to wean off? Are you also going to treatment or going to AA/NA? Suboxone isnt a wonder drug. It works best alongside therapy to help you become sober.

Thanks for the info. It seems some have a hard time accepting that Suboxone is useful other than being a crutch for "junkies", I truly despise that word. We live in a world where personal judgemental opinion seems to be taken for education. Im 586 days clean from prescription painkillers and street opiates, my journey started March 17th 1985 and have been on everything from hydro, to morphine and oxy to Dilaudid. Started a mat recovery program because I was tired of being totally controlled by opiates, I completed this program some time ago , but still have a life long chronic condition with my bones and joints that keeps me in constant pain , I have 2 hip replacements and am awaiting a knee replacement now I still participate in this recovery program but do not have to I chose to. I now receive Suboxone to manage my pain , no it doesn't relieve all pain , realistically no oiate does if your honest with yourself , I hurt worse with 5 Roxy 30's in me than I do split dosing my Suboxone. One has to accept that you can NEVER be totally pain free ever , life is not all peaches and cream. I do however function absolutely fine and my pain level is acceptable. Possibly the person is taking this drug for the wrong reason if it doesn't help pain , then again the person might actually have been taking the other opiates for the same wrong reason, totally my opinion. Thanks again and God bless

I have been on suboxone 16 mg a day for 10 years. I take it for rheumatoid arthritis. It helps with pain somewhat. I have never seen anything that kills all pain but I would sure be in bad shape without it.

You may be sick because you are experiencing withdrawals from the pain meds. That is, you need more buprenorphine. Talk to your doctor.

Re: Blue Valentine (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

Hi everyone has their reasons I feel to take Suboxone or Subutex and mine is to get off opiates within 10 days and not to get hooked on another drug. I hear people say it takes their cravings away. Well that never worked for me . So I was going to ues or not use nothing in between. Now if your on Suboxone your just waiting your time and money using pain meds because of Narcan in it which could cause reverse WDs and that's no fun and I always hated to have to wait till I'm in WDs to take Suboxone so I prefer Subutex. You have to really make up your mind to stay off opiates but I can get clean anywhere from 6 to 10 days depending on how long and how much a day I'm using pain meds.

YES!!! I have been on Suboxone for about 8 years now and I was on every narcotic that the pharmacy had in stock I have numerous health issues and on top of Lupus and Diverticulitis and waiting for my knees to be replaced ( I was due to have the surgery next week but due to the COVID 19 pandemic I have to wait until who knows when I had both of my knees done with company reconstruction and it failed) that's only a few of my health issues. But yes I used Suboxone as a pain reliever after the last surgery and I will never go back to pain pills. God bless you I pray that you find a good doctor who knows that Suboxone IS A PAIN RELIEVER.

I’m pretty sure that it’s 3-8 /2 mg strips per day, that’s how much I take for chronic migraines that I’ve had for about 40 years. I also take a small amount of Xanax (0.25 mg x 6 per day) along with the Suboxone & that has controlled my migraines BETTER than anything else I’ve ever tried & I’ve tried A LOT of different meds.

Tell me what do some of you think about methadone for pain management?

to fireman625. what you wrote about the sub pills not working as well because they cause to much saliva is the dumbest thing i have ever heard. the med. is still entered into your bloodstream. how much do you think that dilutes it.no matter how much spit your mouth produces your still getting the same dose of medication.think about it for a few minutes.that is absolutely untrue.it even sounds stupid!!!! the only way the amount of spit would have anything to do with the effectiveness of the medication is if you wre spitting while the tablet was still being dissolved and absorbed.actually the more saliva the more it helps the tablet dissolve and be absorbed into your bloodstream. the same goes for the films. it actually says to take a drink and make sure you dont have a dry mouth before taking the medication. these are serious issues and if you dont know what your talking about KEEP YOUR OPINIONS TO YOURSELF!!!!!!if you dont believe me ask a dr. if too much saliva inhibits the medication from working properly!

My insurance does not pay for my suboxone either. I had to get my doctor to call my insurance and tell them i had to have it and got it approves. Its called a P.A. meaning your insurance probably requires a (Prior Authorization). Its simply and takes 24-48 hour for the process. Depending on how long it take your doctor to call the insurance.

incorrect, buperenorphine has been used for decades as an opiode anelgesic, it is used like most other strong opiodes when it becomes the most appropriate for the patient(usually terminal...It is 20-40 times stronger than morphine and has a very long half-life....Only in the last decade it has replaced methodone as the most effective H replacment , dosis is coplicated,, if you have used opiodes before or are coming off H or any other opioid 32mg will not effect you, however if you are opioid naive then 200 micrograms will feel like a shot of dycytlemorphine

Thank you for the speedy reply. I ended up taking 32mg by the day's end-in different increments. Zero pain relief. I ended up getting a few oxy's and took one within 4 hours of my last sub. I was desperate to be able to move and take care of my daughter. I don't know if it was psychosomatic or what, but, my pain decreased enough to be able to get done what I needed to do. Felt like the subs took care of all the mental anguish I feel about needing and being dependent on oxy's, and that opened the door for the oxy's to work on the pain. I only can take one manufacturer of oxy, the rest do hardly anything. Maybe I have some weird physiology or metabolism. To be honest, it was the best I had felt in quite some time. Not a buzz, just tasks that I struggle to do, I did without grimacing in pain. I see another doctor today, maybe they can shed some light on my brain. Thank you so much again. It's good to know there is a safe place to talk to others who seem to genuinely care. Happy holidays! Jack

Hey Jack, If you decide to try your subs again your gonna need to wait until your in wds from the last oxys you took. My sub dr. says 16-18 hrs. You don,t want to chance going into precipitated wds. Don,t fool around with this. My ex gf didn,t wait and got so sick she ended up in the ER.

It's nice to see honesty. That's my situation also. I just asked to be put on Subutex (cheaper) I'm even having a problem with that. wanting more then one. So i gave my friend them to make sure i only take one a day. I was on 200mg morphine sulfate, and 16mg dilaidid. One a day is fine, as long as it's not in front of me.

The problem with suboxone is after a few years the pain relief stops to works. It changes your personality. I recently was in the hospital and needed a medical proceedure and they didn't even know what it was. I told them to call my Dr but they didn't. They dosed me 3 times with fentanyl and Versid and couldn't believe I was still awake and talking to them. I could have drove. Since there was no anethestiologist available I basically went through having an IVC filter inserted in my juggular vien with no pain relief. I was only on 8 mgs a day and I have a lawyer and suing to boot! Suboxone is great but it is not forever and it is not a pain killer, it's a pain killer blocker. I guess everyone is affected differently but my doc gave 24mgs to take after my sugery for pain and no way. Last time I got off subs it took me over year to go from 8 to zero. Plus I get more relief from tylenol.
