Does anyone know if there is an ongoing lawsuit against the company who puts out Lyrica? I am a mess from it. Do we have a leg to stand on when it comes to the side effects they found out from people like us? I am a long termer. I have been taking 900 mg since 2005. Is there anyone representing us? Thank you

Hi Judy , i would have thought that with the huge ground swell of lyrica damaged people coming forward it would not be to long before lawyers started to rub there greedy hands together , i am hoping we will see justice sooner rather than later , i am very angry at what Lyrica has done to my son , it has wrecked his life ..

Hi Nick,
I hear you loud and clear. If there were an alternative to lawyers, I think we would all jump on board. I was on Lyrica and prescription narcotics for my pain. Family very concerned about dimminishing abilities. We all believed it was the narcotic boogey man. I am clean of both now, but with the introduction of lyrica - is when I began to loose my hearing and had double vision. As we have experienced, this is a foggy area in our recollection. I went to the pharmacy yesterday and asked for a printout of all lyrica meds in the past 4 years. Surprisingly, although I had stated that I did not want this med any longer, it continued to be prescribed to me under other names. So I took it alot longer than I thought I had, along with several months supply of samples in the beginning.

Thanks for your reply Judy , just out of interest , how long did you take the Lyrica for and at what dose ? my son varied between 2x75mg per day up to 4x75mg per day ,for around 5 months , i believe the high dose really did most of the damage .

Hi Nick,
I can give you a more detailed answer on Monday when I get the print out from the other pharmacy. But, what I am reading on this site is that high or low dosage may be irrelevant. That the drug itself and how it relates to each individuals brain function determines the damage done. I am an optimistic person, I still have hope in spite of the optometrist telling me that my eyesight will not improve. The audiologists' attitude makes me wonder, though. He insists that I must see a specialist to investigate if my hearing loss will be progressive even though I am no longer on this drug. For now, I have to rely on my husband and family to tell me events of the past two years. Like, who was here for Christmas last year, I honestly cannot recall. So, the pharmacy records are very important to me in order to chart what, where and when. Hope this answers some of your questions. I will give you a detailed report on dosages Monday. What I recall, somewhat, is that they started me out on a higher dosage, I could not tolerate it, they reduced it to 75 mg 2 x a day, and then continued to give it to me under another name when I said I didn't want it anymore.

Thanks for your reply Judy , the fact you were given lyrica under another name is very strange , sounds like they were very determined you were going to stay on it no matter what it was doing to you .

Nick, I wanted to let you and everyone know that my Workers' Comp lawyer, who has sued in the past for bad drug claims, is checking this website and the postings out this weekend. Hopefully we can get the ball rolling.

I contacted them, Rothenstein Law Firm, previously, even mentioning that I had been a Clinical Research Scientist for a major pharmaceutical company but that didn't mean enough to them either before they sent back their decision not to pursue this issue.

Hi Scarlet , it is very re assuring to meet some like your self that recognizes Lyrica for what it really is , as a friend of mine who is a qualified Pharmacist just shrugged his shoulders and said i have lots of patients on lyrica .

Remember, just because your friend the pharmacist is considered to be a medical professional doesn't necessarily mean that he cares or that he has the ability to think critically about a situation even though it falls within his purview. If Lyrica had a negative effect on his business, or impacted HIS life in a negative manner...then you would see an empathetic response from him. There aren't as many people out there as you may expect who should, yet don't take a vested interest in the well-being of others. That's why it's necessary that all of us on this site continue to maintain forward impetus in our quest for the "powers that be" to recognize our plight, as well as the fact that Lyrica is still on the market and continues to damage more patients while the drug company profits at our expense.

Hello Nick and others:
I had a bit of a set back this week, so I didn't make it to the pharmacy to pick up my other meds printout. But in my journey to seek justice and compensation I am just beginning to understand the situation a bit more. I have been in contact, with 3 US lawyers, who appeared very interested in my side effects, etc. from Lyrica. They appeared to represent themselves as building a client base in preparation for a class action lawsuit. But, after sharing my story with each of them, about a day later I would receive a reply stating that at this time I did not fall within the criteria they were looking for. After the third reply that sounded strangely similar, I asked the firm to explain something to me; was I missing the sought after criteria because I did not attempt suicide, or have a family member actually commit suicide. I asked this, because it appeared on each question sheet. I never did get an answer. Because of this, it makes me somewhat suspicious. But there’s more: I found a news article that began: "In case you were so focused on the Trayvon Martin case," you may have missed this supreme court ruling: (I mean no disrespect here in regards to Trayvons’ murder trial), and the Supreme Courts ruling on gay marriage and the Voting Rights Act; the US Supreme Court also made a ruling on lawsuits against drug companies for FRAUD, MISLABELING, SIDE EFFECTS, & ACCIDENTAL DEATH. from now on 80% of all drugs are exempt from legal liability.

Karen Bartlett vs. Mutual Pharmaceutical Company:
In 2004, Karen Bartlett was prescribed the generic anti-inflammatory drug Sulindac, manufactured by Mutual Pharmaceutical, for her sore shoulder. Three weeks after taking the drug, Bartlett began suffering from a disease called, ‘toxic epidermal necrolysis’. The condition is extremely painful and causes the victim’s skin to peel off, exposing raw flesh in the same manner as a third degree burn victim. Karen Bartlett sued Mutual Pharma in New Hampshire state court, arguing that the drug company included no warning about the possible side effect. A court agreed and awarded her $21 million. The FDA went on to force both Mutual, as well as the original drug manufacturer Merck & Co., to include the side effect on the two drugs’ warning labels going forward. Now, nine years after the tragedy began, the US Supreme Court overturned the state court’s verdict and award. Justices cited the fact that all generic drugs and their manufacturers, some 80% of all drugs consumed in the United States, are exempt from liability for side effects, mislabeling or virtually any other negative reactions caused by their drugs. In short, the Court ruled that the FDA has ultimate authority over pharmaceuticals in the US. And if the FDA says a drug is safe, that takes precedent over actual facts, real victims and any and all adverse reactions.

Court ruling:
The Court’s ruling a week ago on behalf of generic drug makers is actually a continuation of a ruling made by the same Court in 2011. At that time, the Justices ruled that the original inventors and manufacturers of pharmaceutical drugs, also known as ‘name brand’ drugs, are the only ones that can be sued for mislabeling, fraud or adverse drug reactions and side effects. If the generic versions of the drugs are made from the exact same formula and labeled with the exact same warnings as their brand name counterparts, the generics and their manufacturers were not liable. The Court ruled, “Because it is impossible for Mutual and other similarly situated manufacturers to comply with both state and federal law, New Hampshire's warning-based design-defect cause of action is pre-empted with respect to FDA-approved drugs sold in interstate commerce." And that ruling flies in the face of both common sense and justice. And as Karen Bartlett can now attest, it leaves 240 million Americans unprotected from the deadly and torturous side effects of pharmaceutical drugs. As a reminder, the number one cause of preventable or accidental death in the US is pharmaceutical drugs.

Critics react:
Immediately upon the Supreme Court’s ruling, both drug manufacturers and Wall Street investors were celebrating. As one financial analyst pointed out, drug company profits should skyrocket going forward. Not only do the pharmaceutical companies no longer have to worry about safety or side effects, they are exempt from the multi-million dollar court-imposed settlements awarded to victims of their drugs. One industry critic was quoted by Reuters after the verdict. "Today's court decision provides a disincentive for generic makers of drugs to monitor safety of their products and to make sure that they have a surveillance system in place to detect adverse events that pose a threat to patients," Michael Carome, director of Public Citizen's Health Research Group told the news outlet. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) was quick to react to the ruling by writing a stern letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, "A consumer should not have her rights foreclosed simply because she takes the generic version of a prescription drug.” But an attorney for the drug companies, Jay P. Lefkowitz, took the opposing position saying, “It makes much more sense to rely on the judgments of the scientific and medical experts at the FDA, who look at drug issues for the nation at large, than those of a single state court jury that only has in front of it the terribly unfortunate circumstances of an adverse drug reaction." In other words, if the FDA says something is safe, it doesn’t matter if that decision is wrong or the result of lies, fraud or deception on the part of the world’s pharmaceutical companies. And there’s no way to sue the FDA for being wrong and costing millions of unsuspecting Americans their lives. That result leaves 240 million Americans unprotected from an industry responsible for more preventable deaths in the US than any other cause. I have copied this from an article by Whiteout Press.

This is terrifying news; the freedom that drug manufacturers have under this ruling is nothing short of criminal. So, now I look for justice on this side of the border. I have a telephone interview with a law firm out of Toronto, Ontario tomorrow. This particular firm has a pending class action lawsuit underway with Phizer in regards to the drug, Champix. Fortunately, Canada does not entertain a blanket exemption for drug manufacturers (yet).I have specifically asked this firm to advise me on legal recourse for individuals living in the US and other countries through the Canadian legal system. I will share this with you when I receive an answer.

Ive just come across this forum and all I can say is thank you! My husband has just gone off Lyrica and for months hes had CT scans, MRI's, repeated trips back to several GPs because hes been so unwell. Insomnia, memory loss, numbness down his left side, dry mouth, stuttering, unable to put a proper sentence together, he become so withdrawn and the list goes on. He thought he had MS but of course all his tests have come up negative and it wasnt until I started questioning his medication that we decided to look further into it. Something needs to be done in Australia to make people more aware of how dangerous this drug is!!

I don't know. But, remember when I said I was surprised that even though I stated I didn't want this drug anymore, I found it was still given to me under a generic name. That make me a little paranoid, if they know something, or knew something I had yet to learn. I will be very careful, in the future to know if I am taking the generic form of something or the original med. Where are we headed as a society when we must protect ourselves against our physicians? I 'm no lawyer, but would think that by taking lyrica; the original poison, we are in a better position. Personally I believe it shouldn't make any difference, unless filing a lawsuit in the USA or countries with similar laws. This new ruling in the US is so wrong, for so many different reasons; I wonder what the citizens can do to overturn it.

I had not thought of it from that perspective. Perhaps you are right, however the end result is the same. I also had back surgery and now I have inflamation problems. I have sacroilitis and I just had surgery for tendonitis in my wrist. It seems to be never ending. I had knee surgery last year because the meniscus in my knee broke. You do seem to have a point in that the normal breakdown of my body has sped up. I am now so hesitant to take any medicine especially any new medicine.
