Losartan Vs Lisinopril Re Potassium (Top voted first)
UpdatedMy doctor took me off Lisinopril 10 MG Tab and put me on Losartan 50-12.5MG Tab because my potassium was too high. Looking at the containers each came in, I see that they both have potassium in them. How is it helping to switch me from one to the other except that the Losartan costs more? I have not been able to find out how much potassium is in each drug.

Because of a chronic dry cough, my doc put me on losartan instead of lisinopril. Is this a common or wise approach?
These medications don't actually contain potassium, the listing as Losartan Potassium, just designates the precise chemical salt that the drug is derived from, not that it contains potassium in the actual sense.
That said, the reason he switched you the Losartan 50-12.5mg is because the second ingredient is Hydrochlorothiazide, which is a diuretic that helps remove excess fluid from the body. By doing so, it also helps lower electrolytes, of which potassium is one.

Are there any other questions or comments?
Yes. Lisinopril and other ACE inhibitors can cause a dry cough as a side effect. It is believed that this happens because ACE inhibitors allow bradykinin to build up in the body. Losartan and other ARB's are a common alternative because they lower blood pressure and have a lower chance of causing a cough.
my doctor is doing the same for me. i was curious as well. the dry hacking cough is getting to me and something does need to change.
I have been on Lisinoprol 10 mg for a week and the cough is unbelievable. Today he said to stop immediately and prescribed Lasartan 50 mg. I am hoping that the side effects of cough and upset tumy go away with new med.

Was taking lisinopril for years, besides the cough I have a back ache, could it cause the back ache too.
My concern about Losartan is the Potassium.I was wondering if the Potassium is from a natural source or Synthetic. If it is Synthetic then the Potassium won't help. From what I was reading there is both Unatural source and another source, and then they tell you not to take Potassium supplements without speaking to your Doctor.
My surgery was recently postponed because my potassium level was too high. Yet my family doctor keeps prescribing losartan potassium for my blood pressure. Is this right,???
Has anyone experienced crazy anxiety when switching from lisinopril to losartan?
